Andie--- she's just talking about the guys returning back to their home in Italy. i believe that anytime a soldier is sent to a base it's considered a deployment. so returning back to Italy would be redeployment back. hope that helped!! God bless your soldier.

FYI- here's an excerpt from an email I received from Chosen Co, 1st Platoon CPT. I know a few of us sent packages in the last week or so- hopefully they'll get those :) "The date has come for us to stop all mail coming to our forward deployed location. We wouldn't want it to be left behind or never reach the person you are trying to send it to. I am sorry that the dates are not publicly posted. They are kept confidential for security reasons, I am sure you understand. Thank you so much for your support, my soldiers here truly do hold your gifts in the highest regard."

The ARMY TIMES has an article today about the 10th Mountain Division Deploying to Afghanistan. The link is www.armytimes.com. I assume they will be replacing some of our guys.

i think flexibility is key. as long as we just let them gradually adapt to another way of living and remained dedicated to them, all will be fine. i wouldn't say that they come back different people- they're still the same goofs as when they left, but they've seen things that change perspective and attitude and and go through things that do the same. pray for them. even when they're home. and pray for each other and be willing to accept any new changes they've made. we've supported them this long... keep it up!!

I never said it wasn't normal to feel that way. I am sure it will be different when they return, but I am just sharing my opinion just like you are. I would like to hear the good things about their return. My husband and I were just great when he returned. We were better when he got back than we were before he left. It brought us closer together. Of course he had some things he had to talk about and deal with, but we got through it together and everything was fine.

To Army wife: It is not about how hard or scary it is when the guys return home. It is my opinion that what we are all just simply trying to express the natural emotions that we are all going through. I also feel that that sharing our thoughts and emotions with others going through the same things will help us realize that we are not the only ones going through this and that what we are feeling is absolutely NORMAL.

I keep hearing about how hard and scary things are when the guys get back. Why don't we start talking about how good it is that they are back safe and with their family. Of course you have to work at the relationship, but you had to do that before they left. Just love them, let them know you love them, and be there for them and everything will be fine.

Of course it's "fairytale" to think that everything will be the same as it was before they left. My soldier also has a quick temper, which has faded a lot since he got back. He is also quick with giving me orders, as that is what he got used to doing - but I expected that. We remained in contact as much as possible when he was gone, and he did not withdraw from friends/family. He is very easygoing with the understanding that I have held the fort down with all from day-to-day goings on to finances. He is letting me stay with those responsibilities until I can slowly get him up to speed. I haven't asked him about what he saw or did, that will come from him when he is ready to talk about it. Overall, things have gone really well and he is back with his family which tops the list of priorities right now. He was a solid person before he left and is just as solid now. Happy to have him home! Good luck to all others waiting........still praying till they all come home.

For those of you considering buying "Down Range", I highly recommend it. I couldn't put it down, and read it in one day. It gave me so much insight to the emotions my husband is going through, and helped explain why his temper has been short, and many of the other things I am sure we have all seen in our loved ones over these past several months. The book helped me understand, and gave me tools to use for when my husband comes back, to help him readjust. I ordered it from Amazon, and although it said it was on back order for 6-8 weeks, I actually received in two weeks. I recommend it for all wives, and family members.

I was reading all the e mail about the re-deployment. I know that all of us are excited and crazy about having our loved one back home. Please take my advice...don't have any great aspectations. This is my 3rd deployment and believe me when i say it's really really hard to be together again after one long year. Im not saying that it isn's beautiful. Im just pointing our that it isn't easy for none. First of all you have to think that our soldier has been in war zone for the all year. Some memories will never be cancelled good or bad....they will remain in our loved ones forever. This experience may have changed them a little and they might have changed their priority. for us, it has been a long year too. we had to take care of everything alone, deal with our children, worrying about our hero down range and make it like everything here is more than great even though everything is just going bad. it will take a while to learn how to share feelings and thoughts again. But believe me it is worthy....its great learning again about our love.....I suggest for those here in Vicenza to take part to the SPARK. Its a sort of reintegration for the family of a deployed soldier. It's great and it really can help. Remember take your time and give time to this reunion....

As all parents we would love to have all their time but they do need their space with their family of the past year in life and death situations. Patience and Understanding and God Bless them all.

I was interested in reading about how some of you would respond emotionally to the arrival home of your trooper and how you feel he/she may have changed. First understand that time changes us all, you have changed he/she has changed, but War can really change some people, they may feel distance, less emotional, at a time when your emotions are running high. There lies a conflict, a wall has come between you. What is needed is understanding of the how and why this wall is there and that it is normal. I seriously recommend reading chuck dean's book, "Down Range" to give you some insight and prep BEFORE he/she comes home. --- just some advice from an ole soldier!

Believe me, you are not the only one at all. Sometimes I wonder if the same man who left will be returned to us. Well, we're with 'em so let's hope we can keep 'em with a large dose of unconditional love, patience and as much understanding as our little civilian lives can afford us about their situation. I think it is perfectly okay to be emotional cases, we've earned it and it IS normal, believe me, do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

I have a mixed bag of feelings - part of my heart will be saddened that for most of you I will never hear from you again, but, the other part of my heart will be elated that you are back together again and safe from harm - no more fallen Sky Soldiers !!! My love, thoughts and prayers go out to all the Sky Soldiers and their families. Mommaski

Umm, it only took me around 8 wks to get my Visa and Passport done. My husband and I also went and got our travel passports. That helps if you want to, and most people want to, see Europe. I also just got done getting my baby boy's travel passport and that only took 2 wks when expedited. You might want to put in the paperwork and if it takes too long you can go over and visit for up to 60 days on a travel passport, I think. I'm sure if I am incorrect someone will correct me.

To the question about the visa and passport. It took me about 4 months to get mine in. It's a long hard wait. You have to constantly call and bug them about it for it to get done. At least that was what I had to do.

I am starting the process to go over to Italy with my husband and I have heard some horror stories on how long the process can be. If any of you can tell me it didn't take much time to get, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Thankfully, our son is in the process of returning to Italy!!I have a contact with a local company that has donated several cases of hand and foot warmers to be sent to soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. I need your help. Please send me the names and addresses of some of our boys that are still deployed. As I understand it, we can not send packages to just "Any Soldier", so I need some real names so my friends and I can get these warmers out. I know David, our son, enjoyed them for the past 2-3 months and was sharing with others in his unit. Thanks for the assistance. My husband and I pray daily for all of "our boys" and that God keep his hedge of protection around them until they all come home. Thank you Mr. Bradley for the work you put into this website. It has been a tremendous part of our lives for the past 2-3 years as we endured our son's deployments. Just reading the postings of others helped us many times to cope with our feelings and it encouraged us to know that we were not alone in this experience.

Just returned from Walter Reed last night. Visited with my son and i rolled him over to see Spc. Noah Bailey who is just around the corner. His parents have gone back to California now. Noah is in good sprits. He and Ben seemed to enjoy talking. While there, the pilot for Air force One came in to visit. He is also an amputee. Sgt. Neal Duncan is on ward 57 with Ben. I walked over to visit. His sister was there. Neal seems to be doing ok considering his injuries. All these sky soldiers are an inspiration and it just makes you feel good to talk with them. I feel fortunate to be able to visit.

WANTED

Photographs are needed for the 173d Airborne 2007 calendar projects. Each year we select approximately 70 photos for the main calendar pages and about 30 photos for date pages. What is needed are CLEAR photos of  sky soldiers. Usually each month of the calendar is dedicated to a theme; Groups, combat, jumping, machine gunners, medic, artillery, mortars, support, women, Christmas, etc. I really like to get some photos of our sky soldiers at Christmas and thanksgiving. If you like your photo considered for publication, please dig them out and scan them in a high DPI (> 300 DPI) and email it to me, Webmaster@173rdAirborne.com or Mail a copy of your photo to 2007 Calendar, JIM BRADLEY, 5640 Wellfield Road, New Port Richey, FL 34655. Warning, not every photo submitted is selected. Only those that meet the quality and theme needs of the time are selected. Also by submitting your photo for consideration you are authorizing us to use it in any future calendar, society newsletter, book publication or for use on the web.

For Sam, you can obtain a passport by doing the following: Go to Walgreens and ask for a pastport photo(2) around $6, With your photos, certified birth certificate, and your drivers liscense go to your county clerks office and they will have the needed material. They will help you fill it out and mail it for you. The cost should be another $73 + $30 for processing. Total cost of approx. $106. We got ours and today we received them in the mail. It took 3 weeks. Today I also bought our tickets to fly to Vicenza, Italy. I found the total best buy through a travel agency.

Hello everyone !!! I would like to clear something up for those who don't know - the story going around about the elderly couple and the WWII Memorial is a fiction, wrote by a journalist to make a point, it in no way actually happened. First off- The speech Mr Roosevelt made to Congress on Dec 8, 1941 is about 14 paragraphs long. There was no way the committee for the Memorial would authorize the entire speech to be carved (they determined it was too long and too costly). What it actually reads is - "December 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory." The line they are referring to is in the next to last paragraph and it says - "With confidence in our Armed Forces - with unbounding determination of our people - we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us God." Does it make the story less interesting - No. But in the same breath I think when it comes to historical things, such as documents and Memorials, we should be correct. For those of you who have never seen some of these Monuments, such as the WW II Memorial, the Vietnam Wall, the Korean Memorial and Arlington. Maybe you should consider it. Instead of taking the kids to Disneyland, maybe take them to Washington, DC. These are sights that will stay with you forever. I remember the first time I saw the Vietnam Wall. My son was 5 years old. He asked who all the people were. We explained that these were all young men who had fought for their Country and died in Vietnam. He asked why people left things. We told him that this was a way for people to remember these Heroes. He very calmly walked up and took his favorite toy soldier out of his pocket and laid it by the wall. When I asked him if he really wanted to do that he said "It's alright momma, I think they need him." He then took my hand and looked at me with those beautiful grey eyes and said " I'm going to fight for my Country someday and I will get to be a Hero." I just smiled at him - what does a 5 year old know? Apparently more than me. See these Monuments for yourself and your children. I hope one day to see the Monument in Vencenza to "our" Heroes. I would like to lay a toy soldier there - in case they might need him. All my love Mommaski

SHALL WE HIRE A MONUMENT ENGRAVER TO GO TO ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY AND ADD THE MISSING WORDS ? A MESSAGE FROM AN APPALLED OBSERVER: Today I went to visit the new World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. I got an unexpected history lesson. Because I'm a baby boomer, I was one of the youngest in the crowd. Most were the age of my parents, veterans of "the greatest war," with their families. It was a beautiful day, and people were smiling and happy to be there. Hundreds of us milled around the memorial, reading the inspiring words of Eisenhower and Truman that are engraved there. On the Pacific side of the memorial, a group of us gathered to read the words President Roosevelt used to announce the attack on Pearl Harbor: Yesterday, December 7, 1941-- a date which will live in infamy--the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked. One elderly woman read the words aloud: With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph. But as she read, she was suddenly turned angry. "Wait a minute," she said, "they left out the end of the quote They left out the most important part. Roosevelt ended the message with "so help us God.'" Her husband said, "You are probably right. We're not supposed to say things like that now." "I know I'm right," she insisted. "I remember the speech." The two looked dismayed, shook their heads sadly and walked away. Listening to their conversation, I thought to myself, "Well, it has been over 50 years. She's probably forgotten." But she had not forgotten. She was right. I went home and pulled out the book my book club is reading --- "Flags of Our Fathers" by James Bradley. It's all about the battle at Iwo Jima. I haven't gotten too far in the book. It's tough to read because it's a graphic description of the WWII battles in the Pacific. But right there it was on page 58. Roosevelt's speech to the nation ends in "so help us God." The people who edited out that part of the speech when they engraved it on the memorial could have fooled me. I was born after the war. But they couldn't fool the people who were there. Roosevelt's words are engraved on their hearts. Now I ask: "WHO GAVE THEM THE RIGHT TO CHANGE THE WORDS OF HISTORY?????????" What the hell did I fight for, and what is my son fighting for?

I am planning on going to Italy the last few days in February and am so thankful the army has decided to open up its shuttle for the spouses who are coming over to see their loved ones. This will only be my second time to Italy and was wondering exactly how this whole redeployment process will run. I received the letter discussing giving your number to be contacted and so forth -but still am not aware of many of the surroundings there. Also, how long can you have an italian cell phone number without it being deactivated? I have one, but havent used it since the last time I was over there before my husband was deployed. Maybe some of us wives who are all new to this can get together while we are waiting for our husbands return -just a suggestion.

Gina, Thank you for posting the link to Pat Jacob's story. She is truly amazing. My son received a Christmas box from her and a few other boxes prior to Christmas. He was so moved to get a box full of goodies from someone he did not know. One box included a picture made by a small child with "Thank you" written on it, he said that meant more to him than Pat would ever know, I think Pat knows exactly what it means to our soldiers, that's why she does it. Thank you Pat and thank you to all the other mothers and fathers who also care for and pray for all of our soldiers.

When checking airfare prices to Venice, just a thought. Try calling the actual airlines. Ask them for the military fare. I know that a military one way from Seattle to Venice flying Delta prior to March 30th was around $300. They (Delta, not the best airline, I know)quoted me $700 round trip from Seattle to Venice and my trip is longer than 30 days (sometimes if you stay longer than 30 days, the fare goes up). You have to show your ID when buying it at the ticket counter. This doesn't help anyone w/o ID, sorry. The only problem with flying to London and then flying Ryanair to Venice is most of the time you have to switch airports. The cost of transportation, hassle, and headache may not be worth it. There are lots of helpful tidbits you pick up after the 8th, 9th, 10th time you've done the trip, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

First of all - to "army wife" my husband is in 1/508th and thank you very much for the advice. I already have received a responce from setaf and I have that travel arrangement taken care of. That was a big help and a stress reliever. Now, I do have another question - I was wondering, how will we know once we're on post which unit will be arriving; the time and where the bus will drop them off? I wasn't at the homecoming when they came home from Iraq and my husband is definitely looking forward to me being there waiting. I'll be there in time I just don't want to miss the exact moment. Can anyone help me with this? Please email me if you have any answers. Thanks so much! I really appreciate everything.

Hello Everyone !!! What a way to start the New Year !!! Thank you Mr Bradley for posting the tape of the homecoming !!!! I was so excited!!! I have watched it 4 times now!!! To hear the cheering in the background and shouts of "Daddy" !! How I long to be there. But this is second best!!! Maybe I will get lucky and meet some at the 173rd Reunion. For the rest who are still waiting - I wait with you. Some of "my kids" were in this first group, but most weren't. So I keep saying my prayers both for them and you. Now is the time to buckle down and stay focused !!! Be happy for those that have come home and know that your day will come. I hope the planning for a BIG Welcome Home party is going well and if there is anything I can do let me know !!!! To "my" Sky Soldiers - stay smart, stay safe and stay focused. We love you and we are so very proud of each and every one of you. Love to all of you. Mommaski

Another option for a cheap airfare is to check the price to London and then go to Ryan Air's wevb site where RT flights to Venice are typically about $130 (79 pounds). We are planning to go to Vicenza in late May, early June and the price difference from Seattle is nearly $500 each. You do have to transfer from Heathrow to Stansted, which costs about $40 RT each. We plan to stay over at least a day in London.

To HHC Wife: Is your husband with the 508th or 503rd? Mine is with the 508th and I got an email from the frg saying that there will be a vehicle picking up people from the airport for the month of Feb only that have a valid military id. All you have to do is email 1508frg@setaf.army.mil. and let them know your flight schedule. That is what I am having to do.

I have purchased my plane ticket to Italy to welcome my husband home and I was wondering if there is someone that will volunteer to pick me up at the airport in Venice and return me back to post. I emailed my FRG leader but I haven't heard back from her. This will be the first time arriving in Italy by myself. I'm quite nervous. If you are able or willing, will you please send an email back to me and I will give you my flight information. Thank You!

Yes, its safe to enter your passport number. It is just verifying your ability to fly internationally and is more of a security issue than anything else. The information is passed onto the airline you are flying with. I have used www.Militarytogo.com  several times, called and spoken with real people who are always very friendly and accessible. I purchased a round trip ticket from Denver-Venice for $570.00 with taxes.
