We got a letter today from Kelly. He sounded fine and was asking for us to send him stuff as usual. He said mail deliveries are slow coming but he thought it might get faster as the weather warms up. He had also left another message on our answering machine. He sounded like the same old Clint, so that's good.

I heard from my grandson (508th B co) a week ago and he had gotten several packages. Some from his mother and some from me so I know they are getting mail. He said the food was pretty good and at that time didn't need anything particular. Sounded good. For a change the reception was excellent on the satellite phone he was using. Sometimes there is a dramatic delay but this time it was right on. The pictures are great, still hoping to catch a glimpse of him.

Hang in there folks - remember in March '03 we didn't hear anything for weeks and the mail was slow getting started. But once it got rolling the mail handlers did a great job keeping up with our boys. It will happen again - once they get settled and the mail starts flowing it will stay pretty constant. We're only a few weeks into this - give it time. Old Soldier

If 503 goes through what 508 did, it will take them a couple of weeks to get to their destinations and settled. But, as for mail, it's true, B Co and C Co mail is a bit slower than A Co and HHC unfortunately. I know that A Co has been getting their mail regularly and since they are with HHC it's the same. As for pictures, I believe Mr. Bradly can only put on what is provided to him. Everyone should tell their Soldier that we want more pictures from each individual platoons. I for one would love to see more of my boyfriends unit and platoon. So, I understand how everyone feels. Here's hoping they stay safe and can't wait for R&R to start. Should be soon for 508!! I love you and miss you very much baby!!

luvbug6147 thank you for your message. I happen to think my son Matthew is a pretty terrific guy too! He has talked about your husband MANY times and thinks VERY highly of him. I wish I could have met both of you when I was in Vicenza for Thanksgiving last year. A couple of nights before I left I took Matthew and several of his buddies out to dinner. Unfortunately he thought - typical :) - he had already asked your husband if the two of you could join us. When he realized he hadn't, and he finally did ask you weren't able to make it. Hopefully we can get together when they are safely back at Ederle! Looking forward to meeting the two of you. Patti

To Red Devil Supporter B Co. I don't know why but sometimes I can't go directly to the Fotki site either. Here's (2) other ways to see the pictures. The quickest way is when you're at the Menu Afghanistan page for this site instead of going to the message board, click on "More Photos" and that will take you right to Fotki. A little longer route would be from the menu page click on "Photos from Afghanistan". Then go to at least page 2 and click on the line that says, "Permission by Fury 1508". That too will get you to the Fotki site. Happy viewing! Patti

Pictures: #121 - these are (2) guys from the platoon, #123 - sorry I don't know who this is, #131, and #207 & #208 are pictures of my son Matthew. We heard from our son Will, C Co, they are well but haven't gotten any mail, I've sent 3 packages along with letters and so have others in the family but nothing has made its way to his fob yet. His spirits seemed good, it was great to hear from him. Will, if you see this stay well and safe, we love you and are so proud of you and your buddies for all that you are doing.

Two more quick questions: 1) I was glancing thought the Freedom Watch newsletter and then tried to access the website but there was this huge warning message about only being for military people... so this site is off limits? What does the warning message mean? 2) Has anyone been able to access the Outlook newsletter from the SETAF's website? I've not been able to for a while now. Okay, that's all. Thanks :)

Then Chris got hurt. I remember Chris’s family was from Texas I think the Dallas area. I cannot imagine two Chris Chandler’s but I guess anything is possible. James in 1/508 Co. A. I talked to him recently but he has not mentioned anything about Chris since he was home on leave in December. He was actually trying to find Chris’s number when he was home on leave to see how he was doing. I guess if this is your brother let me know and the next time I hear from James I will ask if he knows where he is at. To Bill Waddell, the skysoldiermom is my yahoo address. I checked my yahoo mail as soon as I read your post. No sent emails, I guess it is possible to spoof a yahoo email address. I don’t send attachments, only to family and I give the heads up and have advised not to open unless I verify I have sent one. Crazy world we live in today…I am very wary of attachments, even from people I know. I know I did not get any spam at my address until I posted my address on the website, scam emails. People with too much time are responsible for this. I don’t believe it is anyone who really should be on this website, I believe we are warm and cozy, thinking only parents, wives and loved ones look up this site, but the reality is that anyone with internet access can see our gut feelings, and any sensitive information we choose to post…another reason to be very careful of what is posted. I believe I probably would have opened an attachment against my better judgment had I thought it was someone from this website. Sorry you were the target, I checked yahoo and only emails I got were scam spam. I’m a proud ‘Skysoldiermom’, but this is a lesson learned by all of us.

I just wanted to pass this on to the Combat Wombats and the rest of The Herd. On my car I have a yellow ribbon magnet that says, "Keep My Son Safe" with a 173rd Airborne emblem and next to that a Blue Star Flag magnet. Recently I was driving on the freeway and was coming up to a car that had a personalized license plate. I could see that there was an Airborne sticker (couldn't make out the brigade) and the plate said a year and "VNam". After a minute or so I heard a horn honking and looked to the left, which was the fast lane. It was the guy in the car that I had passed. (Anyone who knows me, knows how I drive so he REALLY had to haul to catch me)! He motioned for me to roll my window down. He asked if it was my son in the 173rd and I told him yes, that he was in Afghanistan. Then he said "tell him thank you for me and I am with them all the way!" He added that he hoped they all have a quick and safe return. The vet then mentioned he was in the 101st during Viet Nam. I thanked him for what he said and thanked him for HIS service. Not at all a very safe conversation but did that make my day! I was able to tell my son about it the other day on the phone and he was quite impressed. A few days later a young family saw my magnets and the woman told me she liked them. She then asked if it was for my son and I said yes that he was in Afghanistan. She wanted to know his name. I told her and she said she would pray for him and his unit. Then a friend of mine in Sacramento, CA forwarded the picture of my son on this site, to several of her friends. One of the ones that responded is from Louisiana. She said she is praying for us and that she is going to pass his picture on to everyone she knows so the eventually the "whole state" of LA will be praying for us. I told my son there are people he doesn't even know and probably will never meet that are thinking and praying for all of them. FYI - I bought my magnets online at: www.serviceflags.com ------Remember Combat Wombats - keep your eyes on the ridge line, your heads down, and drive on. Love you guys

You can buy the flags at a few sites...google search, service flags. But we got our's at this site. http://www.serviceflags.com/serviceflags.htm I hope this helps, we had our son's name embroidered on it. You hang them inside your window, until your soldier's return. They used to hang these during World War I and World War II. A blue star signifies currently serving and a gold star signifies a soldier who gave the ultimate sacrifice. We pray ALL of our heroes come home safely.

Hey Kris, we got our yellow ribbons up. We ordered a mother's flag to hang inside the window with your name on it. (those of you who don't know what a mothers flag is, it is a red border flag with white on the inside of it, and a blue star in the middle. It is for when our soldiers are deployed, until they come home. Also called a service flag). We miss you honey. Were waiting to hear from you. A package is on the way....LOVE YOU ALWAYS, Dad and Mom, and Natalie

Mr. Bradley, I can't thank you enough for this site and all that you are doing for us. The photos you put on and the information that you provide does mean a great deal to those that are without their loved ones. I have been able to see friends of mine and keep looking so maybe one day I'll see my boyfriend on there. But in the meantime, just being able to have all the support from everyone means a great deal not only to me, but to many others I know!! To the love of my life Mr. D I miss you and can't wait to hear you voice again!! I miss you and think of you all the time.

On the question of Photos, I post photos of Sky Soldiers, because I know how important it is for a wife, mother, sister or uncle to see their sky soldier. It can really make their day. A group photo can brighten the lives of a dozen families. They are important links to our loved ones as are the words we write. Lets keep that in focus. Besides if I posted my photo I probably scare everyone off the site. - webmaster

I know my boyfriend does not want others or his friends to see my pics for various reasons. Also, it is personal. . .the pics are to one guy not all. Just e-mail him pics therefore nobody gets offended or start your own website of sexy girlfriend photos for the soldiers. just please don't link it to this website. . .yours has already offended quite a few people including me. I can assure everyone that currently that there hasn't been any firefights or violence towards the 1/508th as of yet. Please be patient, you will hear from your loved ones in due time. DO NOT ask for there location, and if you know it DO NOT post it. This is a website that can be viewed by anyone, you don't need to be giving away information to those who would harm us. Hello to all, we heard from our son Will 508th C/Co on the net last Sunday, it was wonderful to hear from him, he says that he is fine and all is well. I know their living conditions are not too modern but he doesn't seem to mind. We have sent him letters and packages but as far as we know he hasn't received any yet. Our local American Legion post has been a good source of care packages for the local soldiers who are serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan, they are always asking what they can do, also a local chain of outdoor equipment has been very helpful with discounts to families for any supplies that we send to Will, just ask and you will be surprised who will want to help. Will have a good weekend, we think of you always, pray for you and all of your buddies in that far away land called Afghanistan. Love Mom

To Deborah Yashinski and all who use this site, I received an email from you stating that you were receiving mail from my address that was infected. This site is, as far as I know, our only link. I don't know if there is some identify theft going on or a virus, or what. I am going to contact the tech support people at MSN and see if they can clear this up. I would guess all who use this site should be advised. Ms Yashinski I have attempted to email you on numerous occasions to let you know I have not sent you infected mail but apparently you have not received them. This site appears to be the only way I can contact you. Please advise. Sam Frye

To sister asking about the flat rate priority mail boxes -- you can get them from the post office or you can order them from www.usps.com. Minimum order is a box of 25 but they are free and delivered right to your house at no charge. There are two sizes available. Here is the description from their website. Hope this answers your questions. • The Priority Mail Flat Rate Box is $7.70 for any U.S. destination and any weight up to a 70 lb. maximum. • The inside dimensions for the two boxes available are 11" x 8.5" x 5.5" and 13.625" x 11.875" x 3.375". • The contents of the flat rate box must be neatly contained inside of the box with adhesive packaging tape. • The box must close securely and retain its shape when taped with adhesive. • The shape of the box may not be changed or enlarged to fit its contents.

The US Post office has a box that is a flat rate of $7.70. The box is smaller but FREE and they will give you several when you go there if you ask for them. It doesn't NOT matter how much they weigh. It's a flat rate. If you can stuff it in the box and get it closed then it goes at that cost. I have mailed 2 and both boxes I had them weigh and give me a "normal" price as to what they would've been without the flat rate and I saved $4.00 each time. That is good to me. Seeing how I mail a box a week, it adds up eventually. Thanks for the advice on the baked goods that's a big help. Stay safe and kick some butt 508, we love and miss you all. I love you D!!!

hi sister...the flat rate priority boxes cost $7.70 to ship, and they come in 2 sizes. to get them, you can either go to your post office or you can order them online at www.usps.com...they are free either way. but if you are planning on sending packages soon, i suggest you just get the boxes from the post office...oh, and don't forget to ask for customs forms...i believe it's form 2976-A. i sent my boyfriend several already...he got them in about a week. if you have any more questions, just ask...i'd be more than happy to help! :)

"PATIENCE" One of the most difficult things with a loved one in a war zone. They will contact you as soon as they can - some have access to phones and computers more than others. Don't feel left out. In Iraq we didn't hear for weeks and months at a time. Technology has given us less patience. Always remember they are thinking of you and they are not alone - They are there with their "Brothers". God Bless the 173rd. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Give em hell "Red Devils"

We got a letter from our son, Carl Ireland, C Co today that was mailed from Afghanistan on March 8. Mostly upbeat about the long, long trip from Italy. Some funny parts about how happy the 27th ID was to see them and eagerly help them unload. Didn't take C Company long to figure out those guys are based in Hawaii, and that thay were headed back there on the same transport! Anyway, don't we all know our troops will make the best of whatever their situation is. They are the greatest.

Just received my order of 25 FREE flat rate Priority mail boxes from USPS.com and will be using them a lot. The last package I mailed normally weighed 11 lbs. and cost me over $23. These boxes are smaller but I'll just send more often and still save money! I am mailing from Calif. and anything over 2 pounds saves money by using the flat rate boxes. Thanks for posting the info about this! On another subject, please do not post info that might cause a security breach for our loved ones as to their location or activities. Even though posted innocently, they could cause someone to lose their life and we know no one wants this. Use the site to send loving thoughts & encouragement, exchange ideas on care packages etc. but please don't divulge information that could get someone hurt! Here is an excerpt from one of my son's latest emails: "There was information concerning the status of a patrol that made it onto the website while the patrol was still out, and was going to be out for a few more days. The enemy would have had a field day with the information and our guys would have been in trouble based on their circumstance." We went thru this during Iraq - the danger in Afghanistan is just as real. Just a reminder for some of the newbie's this time around ... Our love and support goes to all the 173rd. My electric candle is once again burning 24 hrs a day in my window and the yellow ribbon is back on the tree.

some advise on how to ship homeade stuff. I have a seal a meal machine and i make small packs of 2-3 brownies or cookie bars. I bake my cookies in a bar pan and that way they don't end up just crumbs. if you don't have a sealer wrap them in plastic wrap and then foil to be air tight that way they might still be edible when they arrive. i never sent cake but you could do the same wrap for them just make sure they are good and cold before you wrap them. birthday gifts could be games or anything to keep them busy on their down time. i have a couple things in mind for my son's birthday in june I hope this helps

He hasn't received any of the packages that have been sent so far. I asked him what else he might need and the first thing he asked for was a space blanket, so 12 are headed their way tomorrow. He already has gotten both windburned and sunburned, he's a 50 cal. guy, so I'm also sending sun block along with more goodies. The mail is very slow as he's only received 2letters/cards out of the 6 that I've sent and 1 package out of the 3. But, hey that's better than nothing. I will just have to start sending more frequently. He said it's warming up there but still very cold in the evenings. They are trying to workout and keep their "muscles" built so they want power bars and sport supplement stuff. But all in all, a minor cold and just says it sucks there but the days busy. I will just keep marking off those days!! I love you baby. It was a brighter day after hearing your voice!! Hope everyone is well.

Got a phone call at 4:00am CT from our son Andy in C. Co. He said all were well and keeping busy. He did not need much except shampoo. He said weather is mild during the day and still cold at night. Sounds better than WI. God Bless all our men and women serving our country. Andy's Mom.

Passing a message onto to everyone...

Mr. Bradley and families of the Fury battalion,

It is a great pleasure to have a chance to jot down a few notes to you about living conditions and our lives here in Paktika. Paktika is roughly the size of the island of Sicily or the state of Vermont. It is made up of 23 different districts (similar to counties in the USA) and has many towns scatter throughout. Afghanistan was a war town country for many years marked by the Soviet invasion and eventually withdrawal. Following that time the Taliban movement began and spread through out the country leading to repression and violence in the name of religion. The Taliban also open the country of Afghanistan up to harboring and aiding terrorist such as Al-Qaeda. Following September 11th and the US move to establish a legitimate and democratic government in Afghanistan soldiers from all over the Army have served here in Paktika. Most recently we replaced the 2-27th infantry from Hawaii. These true professionals have gone to great lengths to bring peace to the people of Paktika and to help them establish government, schools, and medical care.

The Red Devils have had the opportunity to see a people shrug off the effects of 25 years of warfare and fighting to embrace democracy and peace. We are fortunate that living conditions are much improved from the Battalion’s time in Iraq. At the main battalion FOB we have access to internet, phones, a laundry service, a barber, hot showers, a rec room with a small library of books, board games, and our new favorite sport PING PONG! Our cooks work diligently to serve good meals and we have cold soda, bottled, water and Gatorade. Sometimes we have ice cream bars and other desserts. We have a small PX which is run by the unit that helps with necessities and some niceties. Phone access and internet time is usually limited to 15-25 minutes a person because we have a lot of soldiers but not a lot of computer available for Morale Welfare and Recreation purposes.

When individuals head out to our more remote locations they have extremely limited access to any internet or phones. The good news is that the Army and the unit is working all the time to improve quality of life at these remote sites. They are all very secure and have some of our best cooks to keep morale high. Generally speaking the soldiers won’t be at these sites for a long period of time and will have multiple chances to rotate back to the main base for much needed rest and “refit.” Mail is delivered regularly and is a nice morale boost. I personally find I love to get mail but rarely have time to respond as much as I would like. (this email took me three days to sit down and write) so don’t be discouraged if it takes us a while to respond we are working hard to make the most of our opportunity to serve our nation by helping the people of Afghanistan.

I would like to thank Mr. Bradley for the opportunity to pass this note on to all of you. I hope it has been helpful. May G-d bless all of you for the support and love you give the soldiers of the 1st battalion 508th! It does not go unnoticed.

I want all of the parents whose sons' or daughters' are in Afghanistan to know that we're all doing good, HHC for those who don't know is Headquarters company which has Scouts, Mortars, Support & Transport, Maintenance, Engineers, Medics, D-Fac and S-Shop Platoons. In terms of care packages don't send anything that may break, and obviously no illegal paraphernalia or substances. Batteries, Baby wipes, and anything practical for our current living conditions is good. Thank you all for your support, and see you in a year.

They will be there for a week and then returning to be back with HHC and A CO. He did say HHC and A CO were doing well just extremely busy! I hope this helps anyone wanting to know. To the Soldier's and all my friends you are in my heart each and everyday and in my prayers!! Watch each other's back, keep your heads down and Hermes behave and tell my love I said hello!

We just got an e-mail from Will. C/co is at their FOB. It is very primitive there, no electricity or running water. They do have someone who cooks for them. They have 5 or 6 dogs who roam around the area, and are like pets. They have internet access and a Sat phone so you should be hearing from them soon. He mentioned Baby Wipes and gum as some things they will be needing. His spirits were good. Will, be safe and keep smiling, we love you and are sooo proud of you. Mom and Dad

Hey Cindy Ireland, after talking to my son in C Co. all he would say is that it's cold and wet. When I pushed him to see what he needed all he would say is anything to make life more comfortable. I'm sorry if that doesn't help you much but that's just the way my Son says things. I'll be going thru my check list and sending items I know he'd like. I'm sure the guys all share and as time goes on the items they need the most will filter down thru this site. If your loved one is in Co. To All Family Members that post messages We need to have a balance of our need to know what is going on with our soldiers and the Army’s need to conduct operations. Because we want all of them to return home safe and sound. I must insist that ALL technical data, “B Co is located at…” and “my sons unit is doing this….” Not be posted. Please use common sense in posting. Use this as a place to leave a message or share ideas with each other. You can email each other directly and communicate your thoughts without the risk of sharing too much technical data

Victoria, glad you found this section on the site. I check it a couple of times a day and it's just a great breath of fresh air especially when you get frustrated. It's a great support system. I remember the first deployment and when I had those anxiety days, I would just get on here. Also, to those of you who send packages. I posted early on about making sure you send it priority and someone typed back that it was a waste. Well, he was correct in the aspect that priority for used to get it to New York and then it's in the Military's hands. Well, I lived overseas for 3 years and have just returned. Having said that, I spoke to the post office on our Installation in Italy recently. He informed me that if you send it priority, it DOES still apply when it gets into Military Hands. If you send it regular mail they don't push for it to get there. They do put priority in a separate pile as if it were with the US Postal. So, when I lived overseas I tested it. I did get priority mail within 10 days and regular mail could take as long as 6 weeks or never sometimes. Anyway, just wanted to share what information I had received. Anyway, I hope everyone is doing well. Thanks to the person who shared that the SETAF site had pictures of the 508th. I hadn't checked there in a bit, but will start more often now. Also, thanks Mr. Bradley for the photo... I always look forward to them and if anyone is like me, you always look to see if your Soldier could be in one of them. Have a great day everyone!

He also said that everyone is ok, wet and cold, the area is very rough terrain and with all the snow starting to melt and the rain it is awfully muddy. I heard from my son, SPC Josh Blaney 1/508, A Co. on Sunday. He said everyone was fine. He said it had snowed some more, and was really cold. He said they would be out a few days learning their surroundings. Pam Evans and I are from the same area and thru our business, we found out our sons were both stationed in Vicenza with the 173rd. I told her to write the message board to see if she could find out what location B Co. is in. We know A Co. is in -----, and C Co. in ------. Several people have asked about what to send. This is Josh's 2nd deployment, so this time he made suggestions before he left. He said hot plates to cook with would be extremely useful given their remote locations. Also small pots and pans, can openers, utensils, paper plates and bowls. He said to send soup, canned vegetables, spaghetti, tuna, baked beans, beef jerky, hot chocolate, Pringles potato chips, canned beef stew, anything they can heat up quickly would be good. I have already sent 2 hot plates. I wrote earlier that I had gotten them at WalMart and they were very inexpensive. He said it would probably take about 2 weeks for packages to get there, but they had not started receiving mail yet. Also, I think the reason some are hearing from their soldiers and others aren't is the fact that some bought satellite phones before they left Italy to use. Josh, if you get to read this, just know that I love you, and hope to hear from you soon. Stay safe! MOM

Pamela Please trust me they will call when they can, and they will let you know every thing that they can. This is my sons second deployment since he enlisted in 2003 and honestly I didn't handle the first one to well, I am hoping to do better this time around but for me as a mother the hardest thing is still wanting to protect him as only a mother can, but I am realizing its not my job any more. I look at my son and I am just in awe of him and all of our soldiers they just don't get any better. I wish I could of been more specific for you but I do believe he will call the first chance he can

Pamela - I know how you feel. We went through this in 03-04 during the Iraq deployment. During that year some soldiers would call home 2-3 times a week and we were lucky to hear from our soldier every 4 weeks. Some feel the necessity to call frequently and others take the position that "no news is good news." It's tough for us to deal with, but their young and independent and just don't feel the need to let us know they are OK all the time. Not good or bad, just different. We know that B Co has safely arrived in country and are trying to transition with the 25th Division that will be returning to Hawaii. The fact that you have not heard is not unusual at this point - I would bet that 80% of us have not heard from our soldier directly, so we take great consolation from hearing from others through this site. We got our first email this morning and he only told us that is was better than Iraq, they have heat and real beds, the gym was pretty nice, and he's working 12 hour shifts in his unit. You will get that call soon and it will be great!! Trust me! The Old Soldier

Thank you Mr. Bradley; that was very helpful... Adam sent me an email this morning (4something am EST), but it was very short; said he didn't have much time; before that i heard from him at about 2am EST Thursday when he called and only had about 15 mins to talk; I'm very happy to have met him, but it's frustrating not knowing an awful lot about the military until after you meet someone being sent to war; all i know is that he's in C company 1-508 somewhere in Afghanistan today lol

Please understand that services available vary GREATLY from base to base and FOB (Forward operating base). If you are stationed at one of the airbases they have everything you need, yet at some FOB things are very limited. It is best that YOUR SOLDIER tell you what they have where he or she is at. So prepare a list of questions to ask when he or she calls, because at 3AM its hard to remember what to ask? Do you have electricity, If so what voltage 110 vs 220, do you have phones that use phone cards or just satellite phones, how often can you call? Do you have the internet? What about the ability to shop and get personal items - shaving cream, soap etc. Do you sleep in a tent or a building, on a bunk or a cot. Hope this helps

We received word from my son Matthew Sanfilippo with the --------. early yesterday morning. As Gina said they are doing well. However seeing the actual living conditions of the people there does bother him. In regard to the addresses the FRG, Family Readiness Group, has said for security purposes to only write the names of our loved ones on the packages/mail to them and NOT their rank. They also said it's no longer necessary to put the "1" in front of 508th, 503rd, etc. If this is your first time (as with me) or even your second+ time that you are going through a deployment and need/want support locally try the Blue Star Moms organization. Even though "Moms" is in the title it is open to everyone. If the group is large enough in your area the "county" meetings are once a month. Then each city in that county will get together once/twice a month. The larger meetings (county) are more business oriented for such things as planning for fund raisers, volunteer work - like at the local VA hospitals, etc. The smaller (city) get together are for moral support. My best to all of you! Go get him Combat Wombats!!

Thanks to everyone who posted a message for information about the soldiers in HHC/508th. I really appreciate it. I wonder why my brother, Matt, hasn't e-mailed or called us yet. We're getting anxious. Does anyone know if the guys in their company are allowed to have those phones that other people were writing about? When you do have any information about what's happening with HHC/508th, please post it or e-mail me. I check both my e-mail and this message board several times a day. And if anyone's loved one knows Matt from HHC/508th let me know how he's doing. Thank you so much. Bless you. Molly

Molly, Steve is in B-Co ------ and they are doing fine...but only have a few phones and computers. The wait is hours to get to use one for only 15 min. The accommodations there are comfortable and the men are adjusting well. My son, Steve, Just joined the 173rd in Oct. Prior to that, he was out of Ft. Drum NY. While the 173rd was in Iraq, they were in Afghanistan. They carried out many missions while there, but there was also a lot of down time. Volleyballs, Footballs, Playing cards, (Real ones from the casinos in Vegas are extremely popular) games, remote controlled cars, and other ways to pass time were helpful. On the base in Quandahar, I don't know if our guys will end up there, they have ATT payphones. If you send an ATT phone card, they can dial the operator and use the rate printed on the card for calls to the US. Sam's Club has some for 3.5 cents. I hope and pray that the time will pass quickly and safely. Kristeen

Hey I just got a call from my son from over there and he has received the package I sent last week. Took about 10 days. Sent him the satellite phone I bought him when he was in Iraq. To Bob: I bought a reconditioned one from Globalstar at about 1/3rd less than new they may have a better deal now. It's $39.99 a month hookup and $1.31/min plus taxes. I used the P.O. $7.70 box and that's without my former employee discount--that's a joke they don't give discounts to anyone except big mailers. Ron Anderson

Anyway, has anyone had any experience with them? I think I narrowed it down to either a Thuraya from a company in Nashville that claims calls will be .95/min or a Globalstar with calls at $1.35/min

He has met some Afghani civilians who work on the base and says that the area they are in is very sparce. I asked about Pillows and he said they have none but he just rolls up some clothes and that does the trick, he doesn't want another thing to pack and take with him. They have only two computers and 4 phones so he calls instead of wait for computer access. Our thoughts and prayers are with all our brave men over there.

We are sending them general things such as snacks that won't spoil, hygiene items, Gatorade mix, tea mix, Kleenex and baby wipes, along with letters and notes of encouragement to all the soldiers, especially those with no one to write too. We both want to make sure that no soldier's name goes uncalled at mail time. So if any of you know of any thing that the boys need or of a specific soldier who needs someone to write to please e-mail me or post a message. We are trying to send all that we can as money will allow. This is not a private organization or anything, just two Texas girls trying to do all we can for those who give all they have. Mr. and Mrs. Taylor - the addresses you list will work just fine. The key is the unit and APO address, once it gets there those soldiers will figure out how to get to your son or daughter. I guarantee, they want to get it to them as much as you do. The Flat Rate boxes - tho I had not thought of it before - will work great. APO packages are not considered as being sent "overseas", because the Army takes possession of them here in the States. I know it's confusing, but just put them in the mail and send 'em on -- they'll get there. The postal employees here in the States and those working for the military did a great job in Iraq and I'm sure they will do the same for our guys now.

About the us Postal service flat rate box that is for the post office only not UPS the brown trucks. the flat rate box will work for any APO address i was in the post office last week and a mom was mailing one so I asked and they said it would work her box was going to Iraq. the flat rate boxes come in 2 sizes. I sent a box about the size of the small square flat rate box last week and it cost me $9.45 from central wis versa the 7.70. I hope the post office keeps using these. lets just use them as long as we can. My son is SGT Paul Huser C.Co The address he sent me is C.Co. Apo AE 09354. lets just keep the mail bag full to keep their sprits high. Letters cards packages have a good day

Old Soldier is right. When sending packages priority it only guarantees the speedy delivery to New York and then from there it is in the Army's hands. However as far as the cost to send care packages, it is much cheaper to use the flate rate boxes! You can shove as much as you want in there and only pay $7.70! Living in California, it is really expensive to send adequate packages. With the flate rate I can load the boxes full and not worry about paying a lot at the post office. If you live close to New York, you might want to check with your post office to see what would be a cheaper option. Hope this helps! Aimee

Sorry to disappoint, but Priority Mail to an APO is a waste of money. It only controls the speed to the military postal facility, then all bets are off. It took 3 months for a package to get to Iraq once - even the billy goat wouldn't eat the goodies in that one - but for the most part the service is exceptional, considering where they are operating. Just send the stuff and it will get there when it gets there - Just a thought on another topic - our boys and girls were so close to getting Saddam in Tikrit, that it would sure be nice if they pulled in Bin Laden in Afghanistan. Best of luck troops - we're with you every minute.

Make you sure you write it with the slashes and all. If someone else has a different one we can find out what group they are in and let you know.

I just wanted to let everyone know that my Husband Ben McKandles is in the 319 FA and he left at 2am on 3-3-05 Italian time. He said that they guys there would get to email maybe and get to call home in about 2 weeks. I know I will but be watching the emails and be by the phone, because you dont' know when you will get the next phone call. Just send the boys letters that is what gets them through.

And so we begin again. It sure didn't seem like a year that we've had them out of harms way, does it? Once again we send the best and brightest of our nations young people to protect us from terror and free the world from tyranny. God speed to them, may they be safe and proud in their service. God Bless, too, all of the families of the 173rd. May we, too, be proud in our efforts to support our soldiers. May we stay patient and supportive of them and each other. The boxes go to a central US post office in the west coast, then they are sent to the Military bases in Afghanistan. I just sent three boxes, flat rate Priority, today. The only item that is not allowed to be sent is pork.

Packages that were sent prior to their deployment are being received. Also, make sure ANY package you send is sent priority. Otherwise it will take 6mths to get there if it ever does. Sending it priority it generally should get there within 3 weeks. It varies. I try to send a package every 2 weeks and a card or letter in between those. When they were in Iraq it was the same. Good luck!! Hi David... I love and miss you. You have more stuff on the way!! Stay safe and try to rest when you can. I know you will. Keep warm!

Hey Dianne, Mr. Bradley, and Site Readers- I'm new to this board/site, and actually new to the Army and this whole deployment stuff. My best friend was assigned to the 173rd sixteen months ago. He spent 6 months with the guys in Iraq, but I didn't know about this site or anything else. I wondered how families got through it. I am always interested to see all the new messages that go up on here- it's quite interesting. Thanks for everything- the encouraging words, the tips, addresses, news, etc. It's great. I'm going to be ordained a minister in 105 days and it seems that even I sometimes don't know how to be encouraging and it's my job- yet, when I'm hear and read about families and life- everything from dinners to kid's braces- it reminds me that there is a big group out there that is caring and praying for the soldiers just as much as I am. Well, once again thanks for everything. I look forward to spending the next year getting to know many of you through this. This Too Shall Pass, Karen

Hi, I'm SPC Josh Blaney's mom. I recognize some of the names on here from the website when our soldiers were in Iraq in 2003. Others are new. Josh is in A Co. He said he had a lot of new guys in there so I'm sure this is the first time on the website for a lot of you. This website was a lifesaver for a lot of us during the initial Iraqi invasion. We developed a lot of email friendships that we still have today, and for which we thank Mr. Bradley. It was a great source of comfort for us since the first couple months of the war we did not hear from our boys, so this was a great way for all of us to share what we did happen to hear or if someone got a call from their son, they would share that with us. I've seen several request for what to send the boys. I know before Josh left, he wanted me to send him a hot plate, so he could heat things up in his room. I just wanted to share with you that I found several, but one was really light weight by Durabrand (it's electric), and I also found a light weight set of camping pots to send by Ozark Trail. I got these at Walmart, and they were very inexpensive. If your son is like mine, they don't care too much for the army food! I just wanted to wish the 173rd a safe deployment to and back from Afghanistan! God Bless each and every one of you!!! Dianne Massey, Mom of SPC Josh Blaney
