Boy I have to thank the wisdom/advice & heartfelt prayers generated to the 173rd this past year. John is 4th generation military, whould-a-thunk? Anyhow to "Old Soldier, Stanley Rogers, Mr Crowley, Soldiers Dad, Mommaski for putting my John on your tree, & finally Mr Bradley," for hosting this... I too will be sad as this was the first & last thing I read each day. I will never forget this past year as I am sure none of the other families will either...LeAnne, I hope we keep in contact...To all other Washington families, my email is there! Good luck to all and I hope all our "children/family members come home safe & secure.... Diane Caughlan, proud Mom of Spc John Caughlan:)

Michele, it's wonderful of you to offer to continue sending DVD's. I know how much the troops enjoy it. If anyone is looking to continue supporting our deployed, there's a wonderful nonprofit group started by a father of one of our 173rd boys. He started it in 2003 with Iraq & his son just also returned from Afghanistan. I haven't seen it listed here unless I missed a posting. It's called "AnySoldier.com" It's direct interaction with a soldier/marine etc who sign up. Most are just looking for a friendly face from home and sometimes snacks & of course lots of dvds & entertainment. Our group has been so caring that I could see you wanting to continue so take a look. We've had many of our own boys post and I know they appreciated it greatly. My best to all of you. I too will miss you all & think of you often & keep you in my prayers

It was my pleasure to send DVDs to the troops. I am making it an annual event and will be hosting another fund raiser for the troops in June. If anyone has address of soldiers deployed who would like dvd's send it to me as I am starting a list now. I agree this site is just a life saver for the families of the deployed. Its like my home base. I check in every morning and see whats going on. I will miss it when it shuts down there is no better site to go to. Thank you Mr. Bradley you are amazing. Michele D.

A big THANK YOU to everyone that put their 2-cents worth in on this website. It was my first deployment, as well as my first military move & I got a lot of help from you all in the process. Mr Bradley, thanks for giving us your web expertise and allowing us to support our 173rd soldiers. Mommaski, thanks for lending an ear and for giving your whole heart. Michelle Dodge, thanks for sending DVD's to total strangers. Old Soldier, Stanley Rogers, Mr. Crowley, Soldier's Dad....thanks for the updates & wisdom. Remembering our fallen soldiers & may God's light shine upon your families and friends.

Mr Bradley, I want to thank you for having this website this past year. It was comforting to know that I could come to this site each day and get a sense of support from others who were experiencing the same emotions as I was. It was truly a blessing to have this website. I think we all gained a lot from it. I know it helped us all through this last year. Mommaski, you are an amazing woman. You gave all of us so much strength, hope, faith, and love. Thank you! I will always look back at this year, and remember how your kind words, and wisdom helped me through it. You and your family are in my prayers. My husband just returned yesterday, and I couldn't be happier. I think pretty much everyone is back, the last group returned yesterday. God Bless everyone. Thank you soldiers for who you are, and all that you have done this last year. You are true heroes.

I don't see any reason why they can't have internet. Even if they don't they can go to the library or the education center to use it at 30min increments. I live in gov't leased housing (not in Villagio) and I have internet access at home through a land telephone line, but you could also get the service here with a cell phone. Hope this helps.

I know that The song Ballad Of The Green Berets, is about the Green Beret, but if you ever listened to it, it bring tears to your eyes. I sent it to my son 3 years ago when they were in Iraq. He thought it was awesome. So yesterday I was filling up my mother in laws car with gas. She had a am radio station on. Can you believe it came on. So I looked it up, It was the #1 song in March 1966. 40 years to the month. I think it is worth passing on. And for those of you who have heard it you know what I mean. God Bless. John McD

As for HHC 2/503, the majority of them are back as well. Just a few are yet to come home. That should happen in the near future. Hope that helps allieve anyone's concerns.

Hi Everyone, Clint also called last night Chosen Company 2/503 is home safely!! It was so nice to hear his voice, Summer his wife decided Thursday to fly from NC to Italy and surprise Clint so she is there now until Tuesday I am so happy for them. clint also had to buy a calling card so it took him quite a few hours to get one and then get to a phone. He also had to report to work at 8am this morning so I am sure they are all still so tired and busy. Block leave will be soon. I will not be seeing Clint as he is going to NC to be with Summer and Little Emma, we hope to see everyone this summer. Well to all the 173rd WELCOME HOME and a JOB WELL DONE. GOD BLESS YOU ALL. When I talked to my son yesterday he said as far as he knew they were all back other than the few that were staying in Afghanistan. They had an early curfew last night and had to report at 8:00 AM this morning. At least his platoon did. He had no internet access and had to buy a phone to call home. So if some of you have not heard from your soldiers it could be that they cannot locate the phone they had before they deployed yet (storage) then they have to go buy phone cards to call and wait for the minutes to be activated or they have no internet access yet and were going to be busy first thing this morning. My son was going to call back today and we haven't heard from him yet. I am assuming that they are very busy or sleeping after the long flight back. Hope this helps.

Before I welcome home the troops, I would like to give my heartfelt condolences to all the loved ones of all the soldiers of the 173rd Airborne who lost their lives in Afghanistan. Your losses are difficult to bear and I pray as time goes by your grief becomes more bearable. Please remember that your late husbands, sons, brothers, nephews, cousins and friends are deeply respected. Their sacrifices are etched on this Nation’s heart and soul. I am a civilian with no family member in the US Military, so hopefully you realize that our nation truly appreciates your soldier’s sacrifice. A donation has been made so they will always be remembered. To the soldiers who are no longer with us, thank you. Your sacrifices have not gone unnoticed; they are very much appreciated and will never be forgotten. You are the American Spirit and as long as there is an America you will be remembered and cherished. Now to all the remaining 173rd who have arrived and are arriving back from the Afghan Mission. Well Done! You accomplished your mission with courage, determination, grace and class. Our hearts are bursting with pride and joy at your safe return. So, Welcome Home and party hearty – safely, intelligently and within Army regs, of course! (Had to get that in!)

Welcome Home Ilon!!!!! I wish that I could be there in Vicenza right now instead of Iraq to greet you when you finally arrive. I am so proud of you and so lucky to have married someone as special as you. I miss and love you. Thanks to all of you who have kept not only my hero in your prayers but also all of the other soldiers returning from deployments and those still deployed to different countries. It means alot to us knowing that there are people out there that do appreciate what we are doing or have done.

DO NOT POST unit locations or actions, etc ......This is the exact direction of the webmaster posted very clearly on this site. I, nor the soldiers or families and loved ones care whether dates and flights have been posted. Proud Mom, you are actually very mistaken about that. As a wife (10 years with the Army), I know VERY WELL, that we are not given flight times AND THEY ARE NOT POSTED!!!!!! Even if we were, it would be ridiculous to post. There is a person who posted info about an AFB in a particular country and how long they expect their soldier to be there!! Ridiculous. I don't mean to be harsh or hurt anyone's feelings, but you are truly hurting your soldier and their families by giving out this information. PLEASE STOP AND THINK. Your excitement can be expressed in a safe manner in simply saying "it won't be long"...or "it is coming soon". I know that everyone who posts info like that is simply only excited, but to those in the military family who know better, you are positively being ignorant to the dangers out there. Just cease with posting the days, dates, locations...etc.

Hey! what a year+ we have all been through! Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined meeting so many friend across the US... I can't say I ever want to do it again, but as the mother of 3 sons....John is the oldest. who's to say. I feel like I know each of you. Yes there have been conflicts here, hello what "families" don't have conflicts...However we had a common goal, survival. My John experienced the unthinkable. He flew Danny Freeman home...Why? Do any of us ever know the reasons. I just want to thank each person whom frequents this site. You all have been my "rock" during this deployment. Thanks to Mr. Bradley for allowing this forum. John will be home/finished this November, there is light at the end of the tunnel for this Washington family.. I so admire all of the families that have members re-enlisting. My prayers to all of you. I will continue to support troops, I can sit here in the comfort of my home because of them:)...What an experience! What a blessing, it's a good thing Diane

We are a close family and it will be very difficult to lose both parents. I am hoping to see some of you at the 173rd Reunion in NC. We have sent a check for the Memorial Fund. I know that the loss of life during this deployment was a life-changing event for our son. He has decided to get out of the Army when his committment is up in June after 8 years and 4 deployments. It will be interesting to see how he shapes his future based on how he has changed this past year. I know that the comraderie of his unit and the shared 'adventures' are positive memories which will offset some of the difficult times. Thanks to each of you for the support and caring which have been given on this site. Thank you especially, Mr. Bradley, for providing this forum. Blessings on you all.

This is my last posting on this wonderful site. My son, Capt. Michael Breen, 1-508-D-319th 1st Platoon, is headed back to the 1AD in Germany. He posted to the 173rd just a few weeks before deployment, after volunteering for Afghanistan following a year in Iraq with the 1AD. From day one, he was tremendously impressed with the professionalism and dedication of "his paratroopers". He commented often that they were the finest soldiers with which he has served, and that he was very proud to have had the opportunity to lead such a great bunch of guys, and to have done so within such a storied brigade as the 173rd. They saw a lot of combat during their year, split between Camp Eggers and Camp Blessing in Kunar Province, and take great pride in the knowledge that they had a major impact on operations in the Asadabad area. Between Iraq and Afghanistan, it's been a trying couple of years for our family back home, and we look forward to the down time. As trying as it sometimes was, we often found comfort and a sense of camaraderie from other families and loved ones who have had the privilege of sharing this site. We will be eternally grateful to Mr. Bradley, who, through his devotion to the 173rd, gave us this wonderful forum for sharng our collective experience. To those families who have lost a loved one in the fight, we can only imagine the pain and suffering that you are going through, and hope that you might find some comfort in knowing that your loved one died alongside his brothers, while fighting for us in the greater sense, but fighting for his fellow paratroopers in a very literal sense. As a good friend, who served in Vietnam once told me, "Those guys who died over there, they died for rest of us, so that we would get to go home." Thanks again Mr. Bradley and keep up the good work. Thanks to all of you for being there over the last year, and thanks to our Sky Soldiers for a job well done. May God bless the Herd!

Unfortunately, that is pretty much the standard price to come home from Italy. We have never had anything less than $900. It's a little cheaper flying over there, but coming home, it is going to be more expensive. You can check Sidestep.com, cheapair.com, cheapseats.com, military.com, northwest.com. Those all had reasonable prices when we were looking. It might be high because that wil be summer too.

Thank you Mr. Bradley for this Message Board. It has been a blessing for our family to feel connected to so many other family members as our son, Shane served in Iraq and now Afghanistan. We continue to pray each day for all of our troops in harms way and especially for those families whose soldiers lost their lives while protecting us and our freedoms. We are leaving in a few hours to go to Italy to see our son and his buddies. We just had to go wrap our arms around them and say thank you to as many as we can. We Thank God each day that we live in a free country because so many people like our family members have been willing to serve our country and protect our freedom. Thanks to all of you who have served our country. Thanks also to all of the family members who participated in the massage board. It was very helpful to be able to travel this journey together. We pray each of you will experience God's richest Blessings. Pat & Nancy Kelley

Donations are coming in, We have 32 as of 1700hrs today. One lady apolgized that she could only give $5. That's great. Just think if the thousands of people that used this site each gave 5 bucks. This would be built with plenty to spare. In the rare event we somehow go over our projected goal (I can only hope), which we are more then half way, then any excess will go to the 173d Airborne Brigade Schlorship fund http://www.floridaskysoldiers.com/donate-mail.htm

Our son (who is still in Afghanistan) has e-mailed concerning flights from Italy to the states. Does anyone have any suggestions on sites to look for tickets? We've tried - cheapseats, cheaptickets, travelocity, hotwire, expedia - does anyone have any other suggestions? Especially originating in Italy?

Mr. Bradley, yes we will be number 20 and donate $100.00. I asked my son about donating (he's still in Afghanistan)and he said that he would be donating when he got back to Italy. He said that most all of the soldiers would be donating when they got back in country. We attended two of the many funerals that were held over the past year. The least that we can do is to donate toward a memorial for these fine young men that paid the ultimate sacrafice for our country.

Dear Fellow Sky Soldiers Families, As of this writing we have had 19 people donate for the memorial fund, sadly several of the larger donatitions are from the KIA families. As a father of a sky soldier wounded in Iraq, I was very luck in that the phone call I received was only telling me his wounds were minor, If not for his body armor he could very well be dead today. No matter how you look at it, thousand of sky soldiers are coming home safe, that means thousands of families rejoice -while others carry their loss for life. I feel embrassed when KIA familes donate but understand their need to help their loved ones live on in memory. But really, 19 people out of thousands is a poor showing. All of the thousands of you that used this Free service for a year, I ask you again, to Donate. It is not the amount of the donation, it is the quanities of donations that are needed. Now as to the memorial. I will run this request until my contact tell me to stop taking donations. I will them post a copy of the check I am sending for all to see. I will also get photos of the memorial once it is put in place. Thank you again for allowing me ask for our fallen sky soldiers.

Neither the ARCOM nor the Bronze Star Medal are awarded simply for service! They are awarded for a meritorious act or meritorious service or for an heroic act(valor). Service alone is not sufficient justification for the award of either medal. The service must be meritorious or heroic (valorous).

I received a ARCOM for merit achievement in ground operations against hostile forces in Vietnam which was for my whole tour, another guy in my squad received his with a Valor Device for a specific firefight on a specific day. This is just an example. When you are on this web site click on to Chose Co., enter 1st platoon and down in the lower right hand corner you will find a section on how the military determines the level of awards. Hope this was helpful. Recon

Now that they are all coming home and before the focuses switches away to happy times, I like to make a plea for donations for the Afghanistan Memorial fund. The brigade already has an Iraq memorial and it is time to honor our fallen brothers. I ask every family that used this site to donate something. Lets honor those who gave the most! I donated $100 to start ....any one want to match me (or beat me) Click here or on the banner at the top. Lets not just have the families of the KIAs donate.

....."Our mission is to resupply personnel and cargo out to Qalat," said 1st Lt Tim Bragg, a platoon leader with the 173rd Support Battalion, before heading out on a convoy from Kandahar Airfield early Tuesday morning. Most of the battalion has redeployed to Vicenza, Italy. But about a dozen soldiers were left behind to run convoys out to its sister unit in the 173rd Airborne Brigade — the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment. The route isn't without its dangers. Roadside bombs, suicide bombers on vehicles and quick-hitting ambushes are the tactics of choice by those who attack Americans in the area. And, of course, there are regular Afghan citizens, who tend to play it a little loose when it comes to driving practices. But Tuesday's convoy was supposed to be its last and Bragg's transportation platoon hasn't suffered any casualties along the route...... Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

All of them were in support of coalition forces on the ground. “They have the most difficult job out here,” Higgins said, referring to members of the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment from Vicenza, Italy, and Special Forces units in the area. “I can’t tell you how much we respect them and what they do.” Manciu, Penrod and other members of the Chinook crews worked with ground-based troops more than they expected. Both said they had some training on landing troops in the middle of a fight. But Chinooks carried out more than 150 such deliberate assaults during their stint in the country. “In some cases, landing right on the enemy,” Penrod said.................. http://www.estripes.com/article.asp?article=35418&section=104

KABUL (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier was killed and two wounded on Tuesday in a clash with insurgents in Afghanistan's central province of Uruzgan in which seven suspected Taliban guerrillas were captured, the U.S. military said. A military statement said a vehicle from the U.S.-led force fighting the insurgency was damaged by an improvised explosive device during the engagement in the vicinity of the province's Tarin Kot district. It said U.S. forces responded with small-arms fire. The statement said the wounded U.S. soldiers were evacuated for medical treatment nearby and were in stable condition. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our fellow service members," the statement quoted said U.S. Task Force commander Major-General Benjamin C. Freakley as saying. (Army Maj. Gen. Benjamin C. Freakley, 10th Mountain Division commander)

I turned on the television news to see President Bush in Afghanistan. I am thrilled that the visit was scheduled and that he is is there in Kabul. It brings attention to what our loved ones are doing there and the difference they are making.
