I was watching the local (FL) coverage about Hurricane Katrina yesterday & they were showing some citizens going around in their personal boat to rescue people from their attics and rooftops in New Orleans. One older man had a green "boonie" hat on & the 173rd patch was on the top of his head. I thought I'd pass my observation along to you.....something to be proud of.

Stan, WOW! I know your son! I only know him as Rogers. I spent time in Italy with my husband. I remember talking with him about his girlfriend in Ireland and if I'm right he was born there? I spent many ah nights drinking with the boys in the barracks. You will have to ask him if he remembers me. My husband was sent to a different unit right before he left for Afghanistan. Anyway, he would probably remember us mostly as the Hanchetts! I hope he has a great r&r, even if he doesn't remember me. J

Hello everyone, At 0955 this morning I hugged my sons neck at the Atlanta airport. Once they left Kuwait it was 5 hours to Frankfurt, Germany, refuel, and two hours later on the way to Atlanta arriving on the ground at approx 0905, 31 August. He has lost weight, down to about 175 from 190 when he left Italy for Afghanistan. He is, of course, in good spirits and we went immediately to Fuddruckers for a hamburger and a beer. Tomorrow he picks up his girfriend from Northern Ireland at the Atlanta airport. Gonna be a great two weeks. Stan Rogers

I hope this message makes it to Donna Robinson who was the mother of SSgt Damion Robinson. Our family was devastated to hear of the loss of your son. Our son Spc Cory McCarthy was a medic with Alpha Co in 2003.He many times spoke of Damion as being one of his best friends while serving with the 173. Both of them being medics brought them an immediate close bond. We don't enter this sight very often these days, but Cory was called yesterday by his former sergeant and told of your loss. Since they had been so close this has brought him deep sorry as well as the rest of us in our family. Cory always spoke highly of his friendship with Damion. Hopefully our prayers will help get you through these time of pain.We know the pain of receiving word of death and injury and know that it seems like your whole world is crashing in on you at once. If you care to contact us for emotional support during the coming weeks or months please don't hesitate. Our address is at the top of this message. May God Bless you and comfort you. Please know that Damion will continue to serve with others from the 173 in our hearts and minds. Mike and Carol McCarthy, Parents of Spc Cory McCarthy formerly medic to Alpha Company 1/508

Good Morning to the 173rd family. Thank you to everyone who comes to this site. Although I rarely post, it is important to me to be able to connect with everyone. The first two pieces of my morning ritual are starting the coffee and turning on the computer. I check for e-mail from my son, which are too few words very infrequently, and then I come to this message board. Whether it be good news or bad news, someone looking for information, or a cheery note, it is comforting to know that others share the same emotions and are struggling with the same issues I am. Friends and family outside the military do not always understand the daily tension, but I know that 'family' on this site understand. Thank you, Mr. Bradley for all you do to keep this site running, and for all who care about a Sky Soldier.

Well hello eveybody - well we survived Katrina with minimal damage. Thankfully by the time it hit us it was only a category 1. So it was typical damage. You know - trees uprooted, trees stripped bare, garbage lids in neighbor's yards, gas grill in pool, potted plants in trees, fences down, mailboxes somewhere? chairs overturned. We were really blessed - no deaths, no injuries, minimal flooding and short power outage. But the big thing that everyone was fascinated with was - the Hero Tree. I have a small Dogwood with lightweight foam stars with the names of Heroes serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. I have put names of the ones who I know, names from parents who asked me to add their son's or daughter's names, names of husbands and wives. I even have Gold Stars for those we have lost in Afghanistan. Not one Star blew off - I think Michael protected them. So to all my Sky Soldiers - stay safe and focused - Mommaski is still jammin' Love to all.

washingtonpost.com Friends Are Lost In Battle Days Apart Md. Classmates Die In Iraq, Afghanistan By Avis Thomas-Lester Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, August 30, 2005; B01 They met as freshmen in the Army Junior ROTC at Baltimore's Forest Park High School, the quiet, strong boy who couldn't wait to join the service and the outgoing girl whose plans included college before the military. For four years they competed against each other -- both served as cadet captains, company commanders and drill team commanders. They celebrated their successes: city drill team championships four years in a row, her promotion to executive officer in the JROTC program, his winning a coveted JROTC award. On graduation day in June 2000, they grinned into a camera together as they locked arms and displayed their diplomas. And they died within two weeks of each other -- Spec. Toccara R. Green, 23, in Iraq on Aug. 14, when a roadside bomb exploded near her truck, and Sgt. Damion Campbell, 23, on Friday, when his convoy was ambushed in Afghanistan. "This is not a good day," Toccara's father, Garry R. Green Sr. of Rosedale, Md., said yesterday after learning of Campbell's death. "I was just coming around about Toccara, then I got some more bad news. "You watch them grow up from the time they are 15 together. They are competing in competitions, and you get really close. They go into the military. You lose one, then you hear about this. I couldn't believe it." Military officials said Campbell -- assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, based in Vicenza, Italy -- was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during a combat patrol. His mother, Donna Robinson of Baltimore, said colleagues in her son's medic unit told her that four people had been injured when a rocket exploded and that they had tried to save Campbell by administering CPR. "But it was too late," she said. "They gave him the last rites." Green's transportation unit, which lost a sergeant two months ago, had stopped for a rest break when a bomb exploded near her truck and a piece of shrapnel struck her in the neck, authorities told her mother, Yvonne Green. Green was assigned to the Army's 57th Transportation Company, 548th Corps Support Battalion, headquartered at Fort Drum, N.Y. She was the first woman from Maryland killed in the conflict in Iraq. More than 2,100 service members have died in Iraq and Afghanistan since military operations started, officials said. News of the deaths of two former students in just 12 days rocked Forest Park High, where teachers and administrators remember the pair. "They were two of the most pleasant students you ever wanted to meet," said teacher Brenda Wallace. "When they said last night that Damion Campbell from Forest Park had been killed, I just started screaming. I just broke down. . . . I don't know how many times it has ever happened that two kids from the same high school, from the same Junior ROTC program, two young people who both wanted so much to honor their country have been lost." Retired Col. Franklin Collins, who was their JROTC adviser, said the two enjoyed a friendly competition. Of three companies, they commanded two: He headed Alpha Company, she oversaw Bravo. Of four drill teams, they commanded two. "They were just two of the best," said Collins, who kept up with news of each after they graduated from high school. "They both were committed to serving their country, even in high school. . . . They excelled together." Collins, who served three tours in Vietnam during 30 years in the Army, said he advised both students to go to college before entering the service. Green enrolled at Norfolk State University, but Campbell enlisted almost immediately, he said. "That was always his goal," Collins said. "He wanted to be career military." Campbell returned to his alma mater a year after graduation and spoke to students about his positive experience in the service, he said. Donna Robinson said that on the day before her son died, he had wired his 11-year-old brother, Nicholas Buaka, $100 to buy a new PlayStation. She said Campbell had e-mailed her early last week that his unit was embarking on a mission and that he would call her when he returned. She was notified of his death by his father, who lives in Jamaica, because the Army had confused her address. Toccara Green left Norfolk State after one semester and transferred to Morgan State University in Baltimore. At the end of her freshman year, however, she opted to go to work full time. Office jobs proved too confining and caused her to have migraines, her mother said. "She only had one headache while she was in basic training," Yvonne Green said. "That told me that she just hadn't liked working in the office, that it was too confining for her." Toccara Green spent nine months in Kuwait and was on her second tour in Iraq when she was killed. Her family last saw her Aug. 3, when she returned to the Middle East after a two-week visit home. Collins, the JROTC adviser, said the loss of both students brought tears to his eyes. "It's like something just hit you in the pit of the stomach. They were both so young. It seems like this kind of news is coming a lot faster now."

Mr. Bradley has had the following, as an excerpt, posted on this board since it's inception, "dedicated to all Sky Soldiers Past and Present by; Honoring the past, Supporting the present and Encouraging the future. All are welcome...". I have had and have the pleasure and privelage of coming to this board since my son first became a member of the 17rd ABN. By all that we do and say, as friends and family of our troops, we do honor their past, support the present and encourage each individual soldier, as well as ourselves. I truly believe that most of what is said here is without malice; rather sometimes, we tend to misinterpret the intent of what others say or what may be the true intent of what they are trying to accomplish when they post something. It is our ability to be tolerent, when other's words, may not be words we would have, ourselves, chosen to use. It is this ability to be tolerent and non-judgemental that fosters many common bonds. Sometimes, it is difficult to accept the simpleness of words that, in fact, harbor much truth and reality. Patience is an never ending virtue.

It is sure nice to have him home for a little while at least. At least he's home for a little while the same kid that I was at that age.. God forgive old fools and our kids..

First, I would like to send my condolences to Hyland, Lehmiller, Palmer, Hall and Campbell families. My husband was Michael Schafer and I know the pain and the chaos that is occurring at this moment. I was in Italy when we received the news of the 4 and was able to attend the memorial service for them, which our Brigade has now become too frequent. With everyday that passes things seem to be getting harder instead of easier. To Mr. Bradley I never had the chance to tell you how thankful I am for this site and for your presence during everything. To all of you, we are family if only by these messages and a common prayer...for all of our men to come home. Thank You!!!

To all family and friends of our soldiers. I'm a father of a SKY SOLDIER. Needless to say I'm a very proud man. We all have different ways of dealing with this war on terror, we have to respect each others point of view. We don't have to agree with it. I see people saying I'm just a mother or just a wife. You are not JUST, you are. We are all a part of this, it's hard to remain positive, especially with the losses that some of you have to endure. They are heroes and it's our responsibility to let them know, and for the HEROES that lost there lives it's up to us to remember them tell there children and family and friends how they gave the ultimate of themselves to make our world a better and safer place. GOD BLESS ALL OUR TROOPS. SEAN I LOVE YOU, DAD

Hi Everyone, I hope this finds you doing ok. To Tired Wife - yes it is nice to come to this site and see all the wonderful news of families hearing from their loved ones and from those who are coming home for a little while - I live for those messages. But I also know from experience that our Sky Soldiers are in dangers way and the cost of Freedom (whether it is physical freedom or freedom from fear) is blood. Sugar coating it will only make the transition harder. The wonderful thing about this site is yes, we share the excitement of loved ones coming home, but, we also share the fears when someone hasn't heard in awhile, the sorrow when we hear a family has lost, and the concern when someone sees the changes in their loved one. That is what this site is for - to support each other and to support our Sky Soldiers. Yes sometimes it is HARD and sometimes CRUEL when people post rumors (I feel we should wait until the DoD releases the names). But we are a family and you know what they say about families - ya gotta take the good with the bad.If you haven't noticed Mr Bradley has posted the funeral homes that will be handling the funerals for our recent losses. PLEASE take the time to send a sympathy card (address it "To the Family of _____ care of "funeral home name") You have no idea how important it is for these families to know that we love them and we grieve with them. The most treasured ones I have are from the Sky Soldiers old and new and their families. Well I better go - Hurricane Katrina is bearing down and I want to send this before I lose power. Talk to you soon - I hope. Love to all. To my Sky Soldiers - stay safe and focused. We love you.

To tired wife - I, too, come here to see words of encouragement and good news about soldiers getting home, back from patrols, and succeeding in their missions. But, I also know that this is a war and all the news is not going to be good. Part of providing reassurances and support is dealing with the unfortunate things that are happening to our young men and women. My wife was once a 'tired wife' too, but she understands that in order to appreciate all the good things we are hearing here, we have to deal with the bad, too. Our son is coming home on R&R soon - he didn't get one in Iraq - so we joyously hear about all of your experiences with your loved ones getting off those planes. But, at the same time we know there are families living with the reality that their loved ones are not coming home - and for them we grieve and provide whatever support we can. I stood by the side of the road in Loganville, GA yesterday and saluted a processional for a young soldier from Georgia's 48th Brigade and once again felt guilty that our young soldiers are paying a horrible price for their courage and our freedoms. God Bless our Sky Soldiers.

To "Tired Wife": I think the reason there is so much speculation is that this forum is the only source of information for some of us. We may not be on the Army's list of folks to notify in case of the death or injury of our soldier. Some of us may not even hear news from the person who IS notified. I check this message board every day for news of what is going on because I know I will not receive a knock on the door and I may not even get a phone call or email from my son's wife or his adoptive dad. So, yeah, no news is good news, but some of us may not hear the news if it's bad.

My husband left to go to Kuwait yesterday, left there today to go to Germany and I will be at the airport to pick him up tomorrow at 2pm. It seems like once the soldiers get to Kuwait, the journey goes pretty fast -its just trying to get to Kuwait. God Bless!

i just dont get it,every time i come on this page i see speculation about people that have died, would it be so difficult to just say no news is good news rather than worrying everybody-we are going through enough as it is. i dont know how anyone who thinks like this can get through the year, try to let go a bit. if you dont hear anything your soldier is ok so for the sakes of everyone reading this board keep your speculation to yourselves. i dont mean to be nasty but im getting tired of coming on here looking for nice messages of incouragement and instead finding bad ones. on the bright side we are half way! thanks

I don't know what kind of sick twisted, demented person would write such a thing, but we all need to keep supporting out soldiers and supporting each other. Lets all just be much more aware about the information we post. Maybe we should start posting only general information and not even our soldiers names. I don't know how to stop more comments like this, but we all have to stay pulled together and beat this together as a family. God bless our soldiers and God bless all of us.

Honestly, I don't know how to explain what I am looking for. Daymean Lawson Lewis (PFC) is actually who I am looking for. I love this man immensely and I haven't heard from him since May 2nd, 2005. I have sent multiple emails and have had no answer. Every day I check the solider portion of Legacy.com to make sure he is still with us and nothing is posted so I try and keep my hopes high. Last email I received said he had just returned from a mission and the rodeo was cancelled so a package for me was unable to be sent but he was refreshed and alright and he was homesick and loved me. I pray for him everyday and write him every week. I've sent mail also but haven't heard anything back. I know I am on the list to be notified if anything happens to him and again I haven't received anything. I guess I am just looking for some kind of information to know he is ok or to see if there is someway to check up on things with his troop. I love this man and I miss him more and more as the days pass. Right now I just need to know that he is alright. If anyone can help me out that would be a true blessing from God. Thank you and God Bless

Our ANA just got their PT uniforms, but the ETTs didn't receive running shoes from the higher level unit they work for (embedded tactical trainers with ANA). Each company has an adopted Afghan National Army unit (company of platoon) with them, they work alot together. The free world is doing all it can to help out this new Army, but red tape slows down the process. Individuals in the unit and their spouses, friends, organizations have done more than the system has in our six months in country. As 1SG would say, we don't want our Grand kids coming over here, so lets help out. P99

I am just a kitchen manager at a medium sized restraint in Park City, Utah. I don't claim to know much about alot that goes on in the world today, but i do know that I support all that you in the 173d Airborne have done throughout your honored history. I lived in Iraq, just outside of the city of Basra, from @1977-1980. My father(ex-Air Force hnrbl dschrg)was an Instrumentation Supervisor for a company that built a plastics plant for Saddams Baath regime and our Govt. (we didn't know just how bad he was in the beginning) I saw the real people and the ones that toed the line. All of which I believe wanted a change.. they were all scared some more than others, depending on who they knew. Those people needed to be unshackled, and I thank you for helping in that effort. My wife and I live a quiet and peaceful life here in the Uintah mountains of northern Utah, and I can only hope each and everyone of you finds your way home from Afghanistan, or whatever post you defend, and finds peace in this country you protect. Come home safe and if you are in Park City come by The Hungry Moose Pub and grill and I'll buy you a beer or a burger. (please come in ones or twos as I'm not rich!:)) Not everyone in the USA is against what you do as the news would make you think . Thank you for your Service! Scottmorg@hotmail.com

So to all the parents/friends & family, we are just as brave...maybe not physically but certainly mentally! The support stateside is overwhelming in Washington, every Aunt, Uncle, cousin, Grandpa & brother have yellow ribbons tied everywhere. It took my son a week to get home (NC) and about that long to get back to the unit. Think about it tho....this is a month they are out of harms way. They don't see it that way tho...they want to be there to watch their buddies' backs--which is a good thing. My condolences to the families of the lost soldiers. God Bless

Hi Ken, for my bf it took more than a week to come home (Italy). all depends on the availability of the flights. it can take from couple of days to couple of weeks, but I guess that 1 day more or 1 day left doesn't make much difference now that you know he is coming home. at least to me it didn't i was so happy to have him back after i waited and waited for months that all that matter to me was the fact that he left from Afghanistan and he would have been home soon! enjoy your soldier! I did so much with my one!

Again we are trying to make sense of this war. Yes we all thought it would be safer than Iraq, is it safer in America? We have all these questions. I am hurting for the families of all the lost young men giving their lives for us. I am hurting for the soldiers who are so young and have so much life ahead of them. I pray that God's love will ease the pain for the families of our fallen soldiers.

This web site is a wonderful opportunity to share information we could never get alone. Misued, it can be a very powerful tool to cause pain for each other and to innocent people, such as thoughs who run Starbucks.. How are you supposed to know if something is a rumor? By assuming it is a rumor unless you can find proof that it is true. Go to Starbucks website: http://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/csr.asp It says the following: "Starbucks Donates to Military Personnel Starbucks, our customers and partners believe that it is critically important to support our men and women serving the United States. There are numerous examples of Starbucks Coffee Company and our partners supporting the troops. Each week Starbucks partners receive one free pound of coffee. Many partners have collected their free coffee and shipped numerous pounds of Starbucks coffee overseas. For instance, partners in our Atascadero, California store sent their weekly allotment of coffee to troops in Afghanistan so they would be able to enjoy a little taste of home. Our Customer Relations and Information Technology departments in Seattle donated thousands of pounds of coffee to the sailors on the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group and troops in Mosul, Iraq. These are just a few of the many examples of our partners supporting the troops. We recognize and appreciate the very personal connection customers have with us and how they might miss their Starbucks Experience while serving overseas. Additionally, we are humbled that the troops request Starbucks coffee. To enhance our partners' outstanding grassroots efforts in support of the U.S. military troops, Starbucks is honored to extend our relationship with the American Red Cross in order to provide more coffee to relief efforts during times of conflict. We are pleased to donate 50,000 lbs of coffee to the American Red Cross for distribution to those troops serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait. The Company is making this contribution through the American Red Cross as part of its long-term, ongoing commitment to share the comfort of coffee during times of crisis."

Hello Everyone, Hope we all are Blessed with a bit of comfort at the website today. To Kathy: I know what you are feeling of worry and that haunting statement of No News is Good News". But as a Mom too my belief is Worry is Good...Worry means there is still Hope.. Sometimes Knowing is Final. I can tell you first hand of both. But trust me I am coming around to this No news thing to protect my own sanity. The most important things to know is your lines of Command or EX: 173rd 1/508 Charlie 1st Platoon/Rock. Knowing this helps me check this and other sites for others who have some communications. This has cut Worry in half, the other half is in God's hands and a helpful thing I've done is post a picture of Kris by computer with a crazy/silly comment he said that made me laugh. This helps lighten my heavy heart and reminds me of How Proud I am of his Choices in being a Sky Soldier. Like in Marriage: For Better or for Worse. He Loves His Chosen Crew. Kris's Mom

Hey everyone!!!! Hope everybody is doing...ok. I showed my father (we just gave him a computer - he has final stage of emphysema and can't get around anymore) this site. He has been making beef jerky for my son's old unit and he has just been fascinated by this site. He said he wished they had something like this when he was in Vietnam. Mail he said was slow in coming and sometimes it never found him (my mom still gripes over the picture of my sisters and I that he never received ) How wonderful he said for families to share info - that if one guy from a unit was ok then his buddy in the same unit was ok too. For those looking for Official military news - may I recommend  www.military.com I signed up for their early briefs so every morning I get to see the latest about what is going on. Also my husband did a "flag" that any time "173rd Airborne Brigade" shows in the news it is automatically sent to me. So I not only get what's going on now but also sometimes history, obituaries and people in the news. I hope this helps. And now to the important stuff - To my "boys" stay safe, stay focused and take care of each other. Remember we love you, we support you and we are proud of you. Love to you all.

We got a one sentence e-mail from our son who is in 1/508 c co 3rd. He said that they will be busy for 1 to 2 weeks and will be out of touch and of course, not to worry. He was in contact with us earlier in the week and said that things have been hectic up there, lots of ins and outs and that he had no room to store any more stuff so I guess I will just sent letters for the time being. He seemed to be good, heat was not to much of an issue, it had gotten a bit cooler. Oh yes, that latest e-mail came in on Friday evening which means he sent it early in the morning Afghanistan time.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to do a quick posting to let the families and friends of 2 503 know there was a front page article yesterday in the San Jose Mercury News here in California. Right smack in the middle is a picture of 3 un-named soldiers from Battle Co. listening in on radio transmissions. The article quotes Capt. Kloepper. It is nice to see the some reporters have not forgotten our men and women over in Afghanistan! A correspondent for Knight Ridder, the company that owns the newspaper spent about a week with Battle Co. The article briefly mentions Battle Co., where they are from in Italy, where they are now. It mostly talks about the Taliban and the terrain of the land. God Bless the 173rd!

Mr. Bradley, I certainly appreciate the work you do to create and maintain this site. It has been the source of invaluable information and great relief for us. I also understand that you want to keep unneeded worry and panic from occurring among people who get their hands on incorrect or misleading information. I have always agreed with your position that rumors and second hand stories create far more problems than they solve. I disagree, however, with screening legitimate news stories from the site. Frankly, while I am glad to know that people heard from loved ones and so forth, my wife and I look to the site mostly as a great source of information. Having so many people sharing what they came across on a legitimate news site expands our ability to catch the news. I believe getting more, reliable information (that come from legitimate news agencies) eases our worries, while not knowing what is going on can be very unnerving. I believe people are smart enough to read the stories and discern for themselves whether it specifies the 173RD or not, and take the news for what it is. How about if you allow people to post links to news agencies, but screen out anything that looks like someone trying to write a second hand version of what they purport to have seen in the news? Regardless, thanks so much for your work that is of so much benefit to us all.

I was talking to some mothers that had sons in the military and they were surprised by the website I showed them on 173rd. Their sons were in different units (I beleive you call them) and they didn't have any contacts with them. Thank you Mr. Bradley for setting this up and helping us all. You are a blessing to us. The 173rd will always be here adding to history. The info provided is great. Thanks again and thank you 173rd for the job you are doing.

The parents & family of SSG Michael W. Schafer would like to thank everyone for their thoughts & prayers to help support us during our loss. We would like to thank Mr. Bradley, first for having this website which during Mike's deployments was a huge comfort to us. Second for having the honor of meeting you at Mike's service. Never in a million years can one understand this loss unless they have experienced it themselves. We will continue to support & pray for all the troops. Today would have been Mike's 26th birthday, Happy Birthday Mike, we love you, Mom & Dad

It is very hard being a God believing person and having so much killing going on but it is the way it must be on this world. Check out your Paratrooper on www.1-508PIR.com, support the men by seeing a part of their world. I cannot hand in some of their personal photos for numerous reasons (we just had an incident recently with this) so the S2 shop who posts them will not accept them. The men of the Shark Tank are doing great, really busy, in Paratrooper fashion, never quitting. Please continue to support the men, they enjoy every bit of it. If your Shark isn't communicating to you in one of the many forms we have here on the FOB, he's probably pretty busy but he'll get there. I wish I had 50 more men, then they'd all be freed up for more time. But, thinking about it, we wouldn't because our tourists in country would cause us to work even more, if you get what I mean. Many men have already been home on R&R, had a great break from here, some even got married. Congrats to the new marriages and to all the new parents of new babies in the company. OK, back to the grind. Shark 7

Hi everyone, I've posted here before but not often, so you regulars won't know who I am. I am the wife of a soldier in 2nd platoon A-co 2/503. (I'm not sure if that's the right way to say everything, but hey, I tried!) A couple of months ago, I read a post about a project to boost the morale of our men in combat. The idea was to create a banner made up of patches, one patch for each man in the unit, each patch decorated by the loved ones of the soldier. Along with a couple other wives/girlfriends of men in second platoon, I'm trying to get a banner like that together for the men in second platoon. The problem is, I only have the contact information for the families of married soldiers. I'm depending on this website to try to contact the families of the other men in the platoon, so if your soldier is in 2nd platoon, or you know anyone who is the family member/ friend of anyone in second platoon, please email me. I've set up the the email address of secondplatoonwife@yahoo.com  just to communicate with people about this project. We're trying to keep this a surprise from the men, so please don't' tell your soldier! I hope this works, please help me get the word out to the families! Thanks :)

Anybody wishing to get a good visual of the Afghan terrain might want to go to "Google Earth" and download the program. It is pretty amazing, and will get you anywhere on earth in a few seconds. If you select the "terrain" feature on the pick list, it affords you the ability to pan and tilt, which will give you a great look at the Afghan mountains etc. The program also has the ability to go to specific cities in country.

Friday 12th August, 2005 Head of 50 Taliban fighters killed in Afghanistan

Big News Network.com Thursday 11th August, 2005 Taliban leader Qari Amadullah was killed during heavy fighting near the city of Wazikwa in eastern Afghanistan earlier this week, U.S. forces confirmed Thursday. Amadullah was believed to have commanded up to 50 Taliban fighters in the region and was thought to be in possession of a number of weapon systems to include rockets and rocket propelled grenades. "Killing this individual will significantly disrupt Taliban operations in the region," said Army Brig. Gen James G. Champion, deputy commander of Combined Joint Task Force 76. "We hope that with his death, Amadullah's forces are able to find the courage to break with the Taliban organization and begin to reconcile with the government of Afghanistan in their efforts to rebuild this war-torn nation." Amadullah was killed during a firefight with Afghan National Army soldiers and U.S. paratroopers assigned to the 1st battalion, 508th (Airborne) Infantry Regiment. Five other militants were killed and three U.S. service members were wounded. Afghan and U.S. forces were conducting operations in the area designed to kill or capture Taliban leaders.

Hi I just got an e-mail from my soldier. A longer one this time at least 4 lines. He is in 2/503rd Chosen Co and no bad news to report. He said computers are down alot do to news blackouts and poor communications. I'm so happy to hear from him. If anyone wants to wish him a happy birthday its August 27th he will be 22. His last day home was his 19th. I can hardly believe it so much has happened and he has missed it. It seems like time has raced by me yet I still think of my son as the kid who signed up for the Army so long ago. Even though I know he is a man now and a fine soldier who much to my dismay is re-enlisting this Sept. I guess he found his niche. Anyhow thanks for listening and have a great weekend. 503rd ROCKS!!!!! Michele

To J's Mom - the advice you got from Diane was excellent. From what I know and have heard, the morale is a little down not just in the 173rd but across the region. And if you consider the difficult missions, the heat of summer and some of the casualties our young men and women have experienced, it's easy to understand. Your efforts to ensure your soldier knows that you're proud, your friends and family are proud and that the support is unwavoring are right on the mark. At this point and from this distance, that's all we can do. Then we depend on the experience and leadership of the NCO's and Officers that are present to keep these soldiers focused and motivated. The cool weather will bring some relief and contact with family will keep their spirits up - hang in there. This is the greatest Army this nation has ever had and will be up to the tasks.

To Jr's Mom....When do you not have to encourage children? Obviously the military family is far different from everything we understand. It is a life to itself. We are military families. My oldest is in the I-508th HHC. I have a son 22 and a son 17. I am encouraging college, high school graduation, being a good person in general. I know the "hi Mom" I'm depressed voice vs the "hi Mom" I am pumped voice...we all know the voices on the other end, every parent recognizes it...What we need to do is be positive and as we all remember, it is better in the morning, everything sucks at the end of the day when we are tired. Yes encourage him, yes tell him how proud you are...I will email him if he needs support, we all will! No soldier needs to be alone or upset (if indeed he is) Please use us,and I HOPE I speak for many families on this site. I assume that is what we are here for! Take care and know we are here to support

Check with you phone company we have call forwarding and if we will be away for the weekend or even when I leave the house I forward it to my cell phone . I have gotten some calls from him that way. Think how bad they feel when all they get is the answering machine. My son is 1/508 Charlie co. 2nd platoon. God Bless our Soldiers Where ever they are.

We were out of town over the weekend and wouldn't you know it..Shane called--twice!! Haven't heard from him in awhile and have been more than a little worried. Even though we missed talking to him in person, at least we know he's okay--of course I've saved these messages (and a few others of his) and listen them when I miss him. At this rate, I won't have any room for any other incoming messages!! Although I don't post very often, I do read daily and am very grateful for the encouraging words--everyone is absolutely right, we need to carry on with our lives and know that our soldiers are doing what they've been trained to do. I know Shane wouldn't want us home sitting by the phone. God bless all the Sky Soldier families and a special prayer to my very special man! P.S. to Shane--yes we were in Havasu and we brought YOUR boat home--it's sitting in the driveway for now! Be safe!!!

Hi Everyone, I got a phone call from Clint this morning C co 2/503 3rd platoon. My son had just gotten back from a humanitarian mission and was tired but good. He said he had just experienced something he would have never thought he would during his life time. I am going to send some of the pictures to the webmaster to post. Clint road a donkey, tested sheep for diseases and taught Afghanistan men how to make scrambled egg sandwiches it is all in his pictures. Clint mentioned that winter was going to be creeping up on them in September so to start sending cup of soups, hot chocalate and anything else to keep them warm! Hope all is well with the 173rd families. Linda

Mr. Bradley, I can not imagine you howling at the moon, but I do understand why you would like to trade places with your children. I was an army brat growing up but never served myself, and yet, I would gladly trade places with my son. However, I could not do as good a job as he---that's for sure. I haven't heard from Jason for awhile either (he's with A Co.) but I know that they have been very, very busy. The best thing we can do to honor our young soldiers (in my opinion) is NOT WORRY. Trust that they know their job, have been trained to perform it, and that they are in the hands of God. Sky soldiers, take care, stay focused and know that you are prayed for daily by thousands of supporters. I am so proud of each and every one of you. Jas, I love you MORE.... Mom

hey everyone !!!! Well just got back from NC and thought I would find out what was going on. My goodness - ya leave for a little while and things happen !!! When I read Mr Bradley definition of HHC vs. ABC I laughed til I cried. You see I have heard that definition since I was a little girl when my dad was in Vietnam. That is a very old definition that has been around for years in the Marine Corps. So you can imagine my relief when my son was in HHC - Support Battalion (what is called now). He kept telling me "aw mom, I'm in HHC, we just make sure they have everything" Now, imagine my horror when I later received pictures of him on a convoy - and it had been hit!!! Apparently they deliver!! It also didn't stop me from losing him either, he died in an accident while doing his job - he was a 31U (that has something to do with communications) Mr Bradley was just trying to give a very simple definition, because the actual definition of the jobs would need to be on a separate website. Hmmm... I believe it is on the Army site. I also do not mind putting my email address up - deborayashinski@yahoo.com I adore hearing from the families of our Sky Soldiers. Alot of you and I have become friends and you know my "door" is always open. I had not heard from "my boys" in Support Battalion in awhile but when I got back there was a message - "tired but feeling good" I guess they were out and about. I went this last weekend to say goodbye to my brother-in-law as he deploys to Iraq this weekend. He is with 2nd Marine division. Please keep him in your prayers for me. Well take care all of you and to My Guys - stay focused and safe. Remeber we love you and are praying for you and your families.

I knew it would happen as in life, our experiences change us. I'll be glad when this tour is over ... and that will be about the time my daughter is just starting into her deployment to Iraq. I would live through Vietnam again if I could trade places with them, but this is their time now, and old farts like me just have to stay on the porch with the other old dogs and howl at the moon.

Dear Sky Soldiers I helped with your deployment in March (our unit sent a contingent of medical folks to help at the clinic). I walked about the base and was very impressed with your professionalism and pride. Every time one of you saluted me and snapped off "Sky Soldiers m'am" my heart was touched for several reasons. The first reason is you all look so young ( don't take offense- it's really a compliment, read on) The second reason is as I watched you prepare to deploy you were focused, knowledgeable and dedicated to your mission. The third reason is you know the risks of the mission and yet are willing to step up to defend and protect not only the American way of life but also the Iraqi and Afghani wish for freedom. Finally- I see the best of America in you. Thank you for serving. I know you are in tough places doing tough missions. Hooah Major DiAnna Maxwell USAR- 396th CSH "Caring for the Best"

I was in Vietnam (70-71), was married with two children and elected not to take the two weeks R&R because frankly, I could not afford it. With the exception of one MARS phone call in one year, our communications was by mail (snalil mail as we call it now, and guess what, when I retired from the Navy in 79 I went to work for the post office). Even with that experience I am as spoiled as the next person by the fact that we can hear from our Sky Soldiers almost at will. Please Mr. Bradley, do not desert us. Keep spoiling us with the ability to contact each other and comfort each other when we get antsy because we have not heard from our beloved Sky Soldiers. Please. Stan Rogers

My son is in Chosen Few 2nd/503 and the past week or so he has been on humanitarian convoy to the villages. He met a 16 year old boy that effected him greatly. The boy was a leper and apparently was in the last stages of the disease. My son said this was one of the patrols he really wanted to be on. Another time he said he was de-worming animals, someone would hold the animal and he would squeeze the medicine down their throats. As far as I know he is still on the patrol. Hope to see him near the end of this month if everything remains as is and the Army does not need him to stay. I told him this is great but please, do not let your guard down, while he was on the patrol, that is. Are not Sky Soldiers great!

Hey everyone... I told all of you that my boyfriend would be coming home in a few weeks, but we got a call today saying that wasn't going to happen...We will probably have to wait till September, and I guess that isn't that far away, but it is just difficult when you are looking forward something, and then they change it on you! That always seems to happen with the military though, right? So I guess I better get used to it!

I don't know anyone with any affiliation to the group you asked about, sorry. I hope that in the future you will reconsider your statement about not coming to this website again. Some people like to beat a dead horse, but there are others who truly come here for support. I also will never understand why people think it's okay to keep a feud going when 10 other people said the same thing. I wish they'd drop it. For those of us uninterested in the petty comments, we hope that people like you would not leave the site. I need the support, I live alone now, have a job, I try to keep busy.....I just come here for the support, not the hatred.

Hello, thank-you folks for answering my question. It's really heartwarming to see what you really care about. On Thursday three of our soldiers died and all you can talk about is something that means nothing in the scheme of things. I was under the impression that this site was supposed to help military families. I will never again visit this site and can only hope none of our men fighting over there do either. If anyone has anything truly helpful to say to me or my family relating to the question I asked earlier feel free to respond at the e-mail address indicated.

My husband is in the HHC and he has basically only ate MREs, hasn't had showers for weeks at a time, and hasn't been able to use the internet or phone lines for weeks on end because he is on missions, which have been life threatening at times. I understand what the HHC does, but do not sit there and make it sound that their lives are easier because their bellies are full, they are showered with fresh clothes, and using the phones or internet all day long -because that is not true. Maybe for some HHC soldiers that it, but not for my husband.

I'm sure mr. Bradley didn't mean anything harsh by using the term "beans and bullets". He meant they support the front lines. That's it. Not every soldier is eating MREs, living an infantry life style. Many soldiers DO have excessive internet surfing time. Don't attack anyone for stating this - accept it. People have different jobs in the Army, just like they do in civilian life. Does an EMT have the same lifestyle as a CEO who sits behind a desk? No. Before people attack others so obnoxiously here - learn about various MOS's!

Look, I am a sqd ldr in the U S Army Inf. and the terms beans and bullets is what every one in the ARMY calls some person in a SUPPORT COMPANY i.e. HHC! some of the soldiers in a HHC company are 11B, infantry, they are either hurt, not enough room in a company, or they have a SOFT SKILL MOS! so every one in the entire army calls them the beans and bullets. Hell even the platoon sgt of an infantry platoon deep in battle is called the beans and bullets, cause he supplies it to us given to him by the HHC S&T! I do not care who I offend cause I fought with the 173rd Able Co. 2/503rd in Iraq and I meet SSG Shafer when he was a spc I knew him, I knew him well. I talked with him everyday when he 1st arrived and was waiting to go to either in Battle or Chosen co. I felt the worst heart ripping feeling when I read his name I cried for hours, I was wanting to be there to pay my respect to him. But I can not I am here in Kentucky, missing all my HERD Brothers! So for everyone who panties are in a bunch because A Retired Solider who has gone above and beyond his call of duty After retirement, Mr Bradley I thank you, Said the old adage " BEANS AND BULLETS". If it was not for Mr Bradley then you would not be able to be on this web site. As for the HHC Solider who is on here complaining, all I have to say is you are able to sit down every night and get on this web sight, I know you are Cause I would wait in line in Iraq, For hours 1 time every 2 weeks, and while I sit there dirty and tired, the HHC support people behind the scenes are showered and clean, full bellies from the chow hall, and in line, there own line for the PHONES and Computers. So HHC Solider feel lucky. I hope I did not offend Any one to much, if I did then oh well I am a 11B, 173rd vet!!!!!! worry about the task at hand and not your label the support companies get, you have a job to do as every one does you are a solider 1st and for most regardless of rank, and MOS! Just take the label with a grain of salt, or sand for you guys there. And do as you are told, because if it was not for support then the infantry machine will come to grinding halt! GO HERD!!!!!!!!!! Again SHAME ON ALL OF YOU who are getting carried away with a simple statement made to help someone understand our soldiers jobs. Even if Mr. Bradley would have gone into great detail to explain more, which probably would have been taken the wrong way, someone would have been offended because unless there's some horrible tragedy going on someone goes off half cocked. I appreciate every soldier and the sacrifices they are making. Thank you Mr. Bradley for all the time you put into this site and for those of you who want to say something to Mr. Bradley you know he has an email address next time give him the courtesy to at least do this in private.

In my humble opinion he was wonderful with Danielle and Michael's Mom, and the rest of his family and friends. Mr Bradley has done the 173rd a great service with this website. And here you people are complaining of a simple statement. I don't know about yall....but I've heard other soldiers say worse about non infantry guys and its usually said playing around. Its slang people. Quit being so sensitive about a term, and concentrate more on keeping your soldier in your thoughts and prayers. Mr Bradley would NEVER disrespect another soldier, and in case you people are forgetting, as the previous post said...he's been there done that. Thank you Mr Bradley for everything you did this past Wednesday. Thank you for everything you do everyday. I am eternally grateful.

Hey all of you thin skinned people! Go to Google, type in beans and bullets. You will get several thousand hits all demonstrating that "beans and bullets" means logistics in military slang. HHC is responsible for logistics. Everybody in the 173rd fights, everybody in the 173rd has a job to do, everybody in the 173rd is in danger and faces it bravely. HHC is responsible for logistics. Those are the facts. Some of you seem to go out of your way to find something to be offended about.

It does't matter who does what. Every soldier in the military has a job to do. Each has a place and the responsibility that goes with the job. What all of they do is put their lives in danger for us and are asked to do things they may not want to do. They would much rather be at home watching Who Loves Raymond and laughing with their friends. Honestly do we think they want to be in another country besides the United States.

He is a super duper paratrooper, and a damn good scout. I think you should apologize for saying that they are (delivery boys basically) !!! I think alot of HHC are not infantry so people automatically assume their job is harder than anyone else's. My husband is infantry, but I know he is no better than any other soldier. Mr Bradley: Of all people, I cant believe you would say the HHC passed out the beans and bullets. That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard you say on you webpage as of yet. My husband is in the HHC and he has spent most of his time out on missions. He has had to deal with things that other men have to deal with in the A,B,and C division. He takes his life on the line, just like any other HHC soldier and it is appalling that you would even make that messed up statement.

Mr. Bradley, My husband is in the HHC 1/508 and is involved in many of the missions that the other companies take part in. He isn't specific on who he is with, but from the impression I get, I think he is added to the guys from various companies and helps them with whatever they are doing for that day/week. He has also traveled to other villages and stayed for days/weeks participating in patrols and protecting important authorities. The HHC may stand for head quarters, however they are just as responsible for the same amount of hard work and travel as the other companies. I am not sure where you got your information, but I am positive that if he knew people thought passing out ammo was all he did he would be very upset.

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! I got the greatest news yesterday! My boyfriend called me and told me that he would be coming home within a few weeks!!!!! I am so excited, I don't even know what to do with myself. I couldn't even eat yesterday! He isn't exactly sure when he is going to be home, but he is on the first bird out of the base that he is at now! Then he will begin the long journey home! I am so excited! I am planning a surprise party for him with his mom. That way he won't have to make his rounds and feel guilty about the people that he couldn't get to, and can actually relax a little bit on his time home! Has anyone else had a successful party like this? Any suggestions? I will let you guys know more when he tells me! By the way he is in C Co 1-508th. Geez, what a great phone call! I would also like to say that I am sorry for those of you who won't be able to see your loved ones for a while. I know it was hard for me to read about others family members coming home and expecting mine home in November. That's when we thought that he would be home, but now it will only be a few weeks! Very unexpected! I hope things are going well for all of you who check out this board and your families too! One of these times we will be able to go pick up our loved one at the airport and not have to bring them back! Have a great day everyone!

The "HERD" is a nick name for the 173d Airborne Brigade. in 1963 in Okinawa, to call Reveille, the battalion commander of the 2/503rd erected a number of very large speakers from which the song of the theme to "Rawhide" was blasted all over their camp. Every morning, the Sky Soldiers of the 173rd's 2/503rd were rousted from their bunks by the blaring words, "head 'em up, move 'em out, Rawhide" or something to that effect. The entire 173rd Airborne Brigade soon became known as "the Herd."

Heard from my significant other today in the 2-503rd. He's counting the months! He sounded fine, but he never wants me to worry. It made my day. It is so true when they say "absence makes the heart grow founder". I love him more today than I did when I first fell for him......back in April of 2001. Such a short time, but I can't remember when we weren't together.

Ssg. Field, Sgt. Moreno Spc. Rogers: Hey guys! So what's new? Another day, another half dollar:) I hope all is ok for you guys in the 'Stan! Have I told you all lately how much I miss being with you all? I told Joel the other night that it sure beats dealing with these idiots that I have to deal with now. Even as tough as it was in the Army...it doesn't have anything over on having to deal with these civilians! I wish they knew the half of how good they have it. Anyhow...I just wanted to drop you a line before I have to go tell this client that he is not getting a house, cause his credit sucks and he has jacked up history. God I love my job:) hehehehe You all stay safe, and I will write you proper letters sometime this week. I am sorry the mail is taking so damn long to get to you over there. You know I am telling the truth, cause you know I wouldn't lie unless I was telling you a check was in the mail;)HEHEHE!Ciao Bellos, Wendy(Skymonkey)

Hurray!! A Call from Dallas. SSG Tim DeCoudres will be home at 1608! He will be home in time for his brother's wedding. I didn't let myself believe it could happen until he called. He didn't get an R&R from Iraq, so this seems like a miracle. I hold all the Herd families in my heart and keep you all in my prayers.

Isn't it funny how we thrive for any words from our loved ones when we don't hear from them in forever and then when we get what we've asked for we're frustrated if it is so little? It is completely natural to want to know what is going on over there, part of human nature is to want what you cannot have whether that be information or chocolate cake. Just remember, I sincerely believe that we all do our best to be understanding all the time, but that doesn't mean we cannot give ourselves a break from time to time when frustration arrives. I second the notion, laugh about the "what's up" but smile because you know in his own silly way he was thinking of you and he's okay.

You know it is always harder at the end of the day to stay happy. You start to thinking about what our soldiers are going through, where and what they are doing. Then you see the moon and the stars and you think he is looking at the same moon and stars. I then think of the families of the ones that were lost and I cry for all of the sky soldiers, past and present. Some are still lost from previous wars and my heart is broken. My prayers go up to God, because there is so little we can do. May God be with these young men in far away places and may he protect them. I pray for strength for the military families, because they need peace and words to heal the soldiers when they come home. Not one of these young men will come back the same. We need help to deal with each of these lives, they have given so much for us.

You know I had a Mom complaining how little her son was spending with her from college this summer and I told her be glad for the time he is spending with her, he could be in another country fighting for us and putting his life in danger. She shut up real quick and didn't even say a word. Only us that have loved ones in the military have a daily connection. Life turns around our loved one. I'm always glad for what I get from my son. They are not at Boys Scout Camp, we wish they were. I'm glad you got a few words and I hope you printed the email to laugh about one day soon. Remember our little boys are men and they have a job to do. Love them and laugh with them and keep communications open. Pray for Gods protection.

Tonight I check my e-mail as usual and low and behold a message from him. Well I'm all excited as I open it and it reads like this "Hey what's up?" That's it not even signed. I'll give him what's up. I swear if I could I'd go over there and give him a piece of my mind. Of course I'd bring him some homemade chocolate chips and maybe some movies and new socks and those little Debbie cakes, well okay maybe I'm not that mad. Glad you guys are here it makes my nights go better. Take care and for tonight Steve Dodge from chosen is a okay Michele

If you want to see a detailed view of the area your soldier is at in Afghanistan go to http://earth.google.com and download the free software. Then go to http://www.fallingrain.com/world/AF/ and look up the latitude and longitude for the town nearest your soldier's base. Setup the software to show roads, buildings, terrain, airports and boundaries from the "Navigation" and "Layers" menus. Put the lat/long in the search box and the software will do the rest. Experiment with zoom in/out (altitude), view from different directions and zoom in with tilt so you can look at the mountains from the side as well as above and can look down the valleys. This is like flying over the area in a small airplane. Some terrain feature names are Ghar: mountain, Sur: red, Tor: black, Spin: white

Received a call from my son on Saturday. 1st time he has been able to call this week-because of physical and emotional drawbacks. He was with SSG Schafer when he was killed. He states it has been a hard week. He was not 'wounded' in the assault but is being treated for smoke inhalation. My condolences to the Schafer family. I will continue to pray for you and all of our soldiers. God Bless
