I read a very nice article about Company C, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry in today's "Christian Science Monitor." Here's a link to the story on their Web site: http://search.csmonitor.com/search_content/1031/p01s04-wosc.html It gives a real feel to the sacrifices our soldiers in Afghanistan are making, and the dangers they face. I was also happy that they clearly identified the unit. Often reports just write "Charlie Company," as if that means anything.

Heard from my son today. We talked for about an hour. Chosen Company are all doing well. They are all getting ready for the cold weather. Clint will hopefully get R&R on Dec. 20th so we will see him during the holidays for a few days. He said they are counting down their time there. March cannot come soon enough. All the guys are well and will be going to Kandahar for a month real soon. Hope all is well with everyone. Happy Halloween.

He got awards at boot camp for PT and sharpshooter a good soldier. It was good to see him and I wish the best for him. Anyone heard from Chosen co 2/503rd?? Wallsmith was from KS, most family from MO. but, he will be buried in a military cemetery in Michigan, where wife is going to reside. i know this is a 173rd site but i want to thank everyone who has cared about this family as well. i know, military is all family so of course you all care. Tom leaves behind a wife, Brenda, a daughter, Lauren, 13, and a son, Nathan, 11.. he had just been home on r&r and would have been coming home for good in a little over a month.. please pray for this family, you have all helped my family with prayers, just keep it going for all our lost brothers and sisters.

MSG Wallsmith obituary was in our local paper this morning. He was stationed with the 3rd Inf in Iraq. There will be a memorial service at the First Baptsit Church in Hinesville, Georgia on Tuesday evening at 6:00. The paper lists him as being a native of Wichita, KS and most of his family is listed as being from Carthage, MO. It does not have a date or location for the funeral.

it was a typo, Tom is from Missouri.. sorry about that.. Mr.Rogers, Rev.Phelps calls himself a Baptist and works out of a Kansas church. he thinks all the soldiers are being killed because of the militaries don't ask don't tell policy on gays. in his sick mind he thinks all our soldiers are being killed because we let gays in the services.. totally screwed in the head! at the protest outside of our church, they held up signs that said "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "Your soldier is going to hell.".. true God-fearing people there, huh?? John Doles, my husband, fought for these people to be free and able to say what they want and that's how they thank him, say he's going to hell. so, to them and all the media who wanted to put the negative spin on my husband's death, i can only say, "you are all so ill-informed and i hope when you meet your maker, he takes ignorance into consideration and takes mercy on your soul." God bless all our troops!! keep fighting hard 173rd!

I have to agree with Dee on this one. One of the first things my grandson asks about when he calls depending on the season is how the Hawks, Sonics or Mariners are doing. I don't see a couple of scores being posted as much of a problem as people attacking someone for some wrong word. I realize this is your site and we play by your rules and we do appreciate you and all you do to keep us up to date but I see nothing wrong with an occasional score being posted. Just an opinion!

glad you went to SSG Ezernack's service. also glad the jerks got the dates wrong and weren't there to protest. are there any Legion Riders around Michigan? we lost a friend in Iraq this last week. he was my son's boyscout leader when we were at Polk and he had just sent a condolence to my son about John's passing. he and another man were killed by an IED. the reason i'm asking about Michigan is because Tom Wallsmith will be buried there, he has a wife and children and i want them to be shielded from the protesters hate as well as my family was. thanks for all you do.. the world is a better place with the Legion Riders a part of it..

Mr. Bradley - Your time and effort is appreciated but who reads this site? Loved ones? Friends? Do our soldiers ever look at this site? If they do I am sure many are interested in sports. I often see and read people being nasty to each other, some mean, negative comments, and unfortunately so much sadness. I agree mean spirited comments should not be made but if a sports score being posted on this website is the worst thing that happens today we are very blessed.

Today about 20 of us rode to SSG E's Memorial service in Shreveport. It was a beautiful day fall day to say goodbye to one of our brothers. The family definitely appreciates all that everyone has done for them. They were extremely nice people. SSG E was remembered as the hero he was. The despicable Rev. Phelps did not show up. They mistakenly went to Shreveport last weekend and were met with an empty parking lot. Heather, I am glad that the fellow Legion Riders were able to help out at the service for your husband John. I knew him well and remember the day that he came to the company. May both him and SSG E rest in peace.

To Michelle : As far as meats go remember this - it takes 2 -4 weeks for packages to get to them (right now my packages get there in 2 weeks but as the holidays get closer the time will increase) So you don't want to send anything perishable !!! I did send some nice big canned hams to my son in Iraq for Christmas last year. There are some real nice ones thru Hickory Farms. I only send Spam as a joke !!!! Although apparently some of these kids will eat anything !!! I have an aversion to anything in a square can - you know... sardines, smoked oysters, spam... UGH !!!! So I guess my best advice is look at spoilage. Dry ice is wonderful but the post office requires special handling and when it gets turned over to the military - who knows?!? To my Special Sky Soldiers : stay safe, stay strong and remember we love you. Love Mommaski

so glad you are going to help out with Ezernacks service. it was so wonderful to have the legion riders at my husband, SSG John Doles, service. we never saw the hatred they were spewing until that night on the news and the next day in some of the papers. alot of the papers refused to write anything about them but honored my husband and all the legion riders.. thanks to all you patriots!!! one protester even tried to burn an American flag, one of the police officers went over, told him "Sorry sir, our little town of Chelsea has a ban against burning anything inside the city limits." so, he didn't get to desecrate ole' red, white, and blue!! God Bless all those who believe in our men and women in uniform.. never let that belief waver..

To Army girlfriend: No question is a stupid question! My son is home now I have had several questions in private e-mails about what the process was. I am going to post this hoping it will answer your questions and some others might have. He was in Kandahar for several days until they had a group of guys to send out. He left there and went to Kuwait for about a day and a half I think. Then on to Germany. He was able to call us from there and give us arrival times in the US. He was only there for a few hours then flew to Georgia (about 10 or 12 hours), had a short layover then on to Michigan. It is my understanding that they fly into Georgia, Texas or New York before heading into their home states. Home this helps some of you.

Casey, I understand your frustration. There isn't a week that goes by that I'm not in a heated argument at school about our guys in Afghanistan. Even educated college people don't remember that we have troops there (that is until lately and trust me I've put up a good fight about that too). But I let them be ignorant and continue to be the proud 'lil army girlfriend that I am. So let people be ignorant and if others aren't willing to help make your guy's homecoming special remember that you have a whole website full of people who are happy for you. Enjoy your time with him... Spc Baker I miss you and can't wait to see you again, please continue to be safe for me. And all the rest of the Sky Soldiers fight on and God bless.

Casey, please don't be upset for the banners. your husband is on his way home, are the banners really important? he'll be welcomed by people he loves and who love him, is the banner at the pharmacy that much of a big deal? some of us did not get to see our soldier. your husband is coming home, for as much the behavior of some businesses may be upsetting, please remember he'll soon be there to you. and god bless us all.

Ok I am upset and furious and need to vent to people who understand and care. My husband is on his way home right now for R&R. I went to a few local business's who normally put up a sign Welcome Home then the soldiers name. Well... I went to a local pharmacy and asked them and they were ok with it. Then I forgot to put on there Welcome Home from Afghanistan. Well once I said that, they were hesitant on the phone and said well we will do our best to get it up. Well he will be here tomorrow and it isn't up yet and I do not believe they are going to put it up. Also I went to my local newspaper and they are acting like they don't want to put an article on for me. I have seen alot of articles in the past about soldiers coming home for R&R and there is a story about them and their unit. Well I have never seen one from Afghanistan so I am pissed. I think it is sad these people are like this. I am sorry I am just upset. I feel like cause they do not believe anything is going on over there. I mean the girl on the phone was like "Oh, your husband isn't in Iraq?" Whatever a war is a war. I wanted to smack some sense into her over the phone. I just said forget it it sounds like to big of a problem for you. I mean my husband did his tour in Iraq and if he didn't so what!!!

Sgt. Kevin Field......hey brother! You have to email me Katie's Phone #...I lost it, and I still can't find it. You know I guess I could call your mother or brother...ok you see what a genius I am:) Anyhow, how are you doing? I was going to call you when you were home on R&R, but I know you had a lot to do, so Joel and I thought it best that we should call Katie after you left..so we didn't take away from the family time hun. You know we miss you and think of you everyday. Cesar is always mentioning Autumn's name is his sad little remarks of "I miss my Autumn...why can't I ever see her now?!?!" I miss all of you...I miss my Katie, Autumn and Jacobeaner! Oh yeah I miss you too. I think Joel misses you most, but then again once you've spooned with someone that puts the relationship on a whole other level:) I'm still happy for you two:) hehe! He misses his boyfriend..in fact he judges everyone by your standard...meaning "these pouge civi's are never gonna compare to Kevin, Hope and Dodd" so needless to say he's not really found too many friends to hang out with here. Ok now I am getting sad, so do me a favor and let us know you're alright and I will call your mom or brother for Katies number. We have broadband, so I can call Europe for free from the land line...hope they hooked up your land line back home:) Take care of yourself, and hurry home! Ciao, Wendy

I guess she really wanted 5 kids..hehe! I got an email from Sammy the other day, and the lucky bastard is rocking it in the Netherlands! I told him we all hated him for being such a lucky punk! We know what he's REALLY doing over there, and I told him to save some for the rest of us;)As for us, we're just hanging in there...working and such. I have an ISO audit in the morning so I have to get to bed sometime tonight. Oh by the wya...JB and I are hosting an Italian exchange student this 2nd semester. Dear Nancy - I live in Irondale, Alabama. You know the movie " Fried Green Tomatoes"? It is sort of a suburb of Birmingham. A plane huh? uhmmm... my yard is big but I don't think you can land a plane !!! I live REAL close to the airport. No really, email me and I can tell you exactly how to get here. If you are going to just do a flyby - let me know I can give you some landmarks to look for. The Tree has now lost most of it's leaves so I am the only person in the area with what looks like a blue amd gold tree. All my love to my Sky Soldiers out there. You stay safe and strong. Mommaski

To Toni : What is The Hero Tree? the tree is actually a Dogwood tree in my front yard. It is covered with Blue Stars representing those who are serving in a combat zone (mostly those from the 173rd)Each Star has a rank, name and unit on it, these are given to me by parents, wives, fiancées, girlfriends, siblings and buddies. This is their way of saying to the world "You are MY Hero". The tree also has Gold Stars on it (173rd and Alabama only) to represent the Fallen Heroes. These are put up automatically by me to Honor those who have given all. There are special Gold Star up to represent the 173rd's Fallen of Vietnam and a White Star to represent the MIA of the 173rd. The name came from my neighbors who told other people to "Come see The Hero Tree". I know the tree is meant to be here because when Hurricane Katrina came thru it took part of my roof and put a large gas grill into my swimming pool, however, NOT one little, lightweight foam star came off. So here it will remain until our Sky Soldiers come home. Then I will package them up and send them to my contacts to be given to each of the soldiers. Now not all the soldiers will get one - I don't know everybody !!! So, Toni that is what The Hero Tree is. As to where you can go see it - well unless you come to Alabama you can't see it in person. But, on 10/10 on the messages is a picture of the tree (course it looks much different now - Way More Stars !!!) If you have any more questions or you want to add YOUR Hero - drop me a line. Love to all Mommaski

When your soldier is coming home or flying back the process is the same at our airport. You go to the counter for the airline they are using and tell them your loved one is coming in on a certain flight. They check for his name in the computer and they ask for your photo ID. They issue you what looks like a boarding pass and you go through security to the gate. When they are returning to Atlanta you go to the counter with your soldier and either they will ask you if you'd like to accompany then to the gate or you ask if they don't offer.. I don't know if all airlines do it this way but when our son left they had him board in the last boarding group. He was the last person to board. When they arrived back in Atlanta the pilot asked the passengers to remain seated and announced they wanted to allow a returning serviceman to deplane first. I was surprised by the way strangers treated him - just walking up and shaking his hand and thanking him. One woman shook his hand with a $5 bill folded up in her hand and told him to buy himself a beer. It made me feel like he was appreciated and I believe he felt the same way.

RED FRIDAYS Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority". We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or over-bearing. We get no liberal media coverage on TV, to reflect our message or our opinions. Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that.. Every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red. By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family. It will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on. The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is...We need your support and your prayers. Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example; and wear something red every Friday. I sent this out to everyone on my email list. Will you? WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE. THEIR BLOOD RUNS RED-WEAR RED! MOST OF ALL - GOD BLESS AMERICA

I just ordered a propane boot dryer from Cabela's to send to my honey. They run on the little Coleman tanks and they guys get those from the Army. You'd also have to purchase the extensions because their boots are taller than the max. size for the dryer. They also sell glove attachments. Cabela's ships to APO addresses so you could have it shipped directly. Also, I shopped around and you can find the dryers from other merchants, the brand is Peet. I just used Cabelas because it is a trusted site... we're prefered customers if you know what I mean :)

Just talked to my son five minutes ago. 3rd platoon, Chosen Few, 2nd/503. Everyone is alright. He is going to get a little more sleep before going on guard duty on the morning (dawn, coldest) watch. Sounded good. He received the coffee maker I sent to him and his is the only one in his barracks and everyone uses it. He is taking two mugs of coffee with him on guard. Sounded upbeat, sounded good. To Mommaski: I would be honorned and proud if you could add my husband's name to your hero tree. SSG Derrion Waddell. He's in Bravo Co. And I just found out his leave dates has been changed (AGAIN). But instead of coming home in Dec. He'll be home in 3 weeks!!!!!! I am so excited, and the "rush" of anticipation and everything else is hitting me already. I just keep thinking, "I have so much to do." But who cares, I just can't wait to hold and never let go. Oh how I wish he was coming home for good. Anyway, I come on this site often and post occasionally. But I just want to let you know that you have been an inspiration to alot of wives, mothers, fathers, girlfriends, friends, ETC. Everything you've said on here has been nothing short of intelligent, honest, and true to our beloved skysoldiers. I hope everything goes perfect for your interview, and I look foward to seeing it. Ok all, I just asked my son what we should send. He said the same things I have been sending. Here goes, coffee and filters, tea, hot cocoa, his favorite cereal, snack bars, oatmeal. X-box games, DVD's, magazines, books, Q-tips and baby wipes(they can use both for cleaning their weapons) socks, T-shirts. Check with your soldier and see if they have a coffee pot in their AO. and thermos. I got a coffeemaker from Walmart that has a stainless steel pot and a thermos that has stainless liner that won't break and it floats. Sending an extra coffee pot for just water too. A small microwave after he picks one out. I pretty much send the same things over and over but he said that is what he wants. Check with your soldier and make sure other guys are recieving packages. If not send one to them. My mother and I make about two hundred cookies every two weeks and send them for the whole platoon. Chocolate chip are the favorite of course and no bakes, then oatmeal raisin. That is what the guys have requested from me. I hope this helps give some of you one or two new ideas. Mommaski did you ever get my e-mail about sending you some stars? Mary Jo

Ok let me see if I got this right - We hate the media, we slove and support our Sky Soldiers ? Well we seem to all be on the same page !!! So let's talk about something important - me. Oops !! Sorry that just slipped out Ha Ha Ha!!! How about - all the people that currently have loved ones home on R&R have to ask their loved one "What is the one thing you wish people would send you?" Then we would have some more goodie box ideas. I think I am running out, either that or my brain is dying of old age before I am. It would be fun to get some ideas from the guys themselves besides "Aw nothing, we're good". If they want actual hand written letters, then ok. But the other thing is it would be nice to share R&R with those of you lucky enough to have it now. Stay safe and strong. My thoughts, my prayers and my love are with you all. Mommaski

I feel that the root of all the negitive feedback from the divided states of america, are CNN, FOX, CNBC, MSN, ABC, NBC, CBS and ALL and I mean ALL the embedded and freelance writers that have been allowed by the BS, oops, I mean Bush adminstration to glorify the war on Iraq, and Afghanistan. But know one knew of the back lash it would cause. Except for the mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers and All the Vets of any war know just how real things are in war. I was there in Iraq, I know how things are. You do what yopu need to do just to live another day. I think the whole Genevia Convention Rules of Engagemaent ideas, need to go out the window. Change it to the bibles rules, AN EYE FOR AN EYE!!!! they cut off our loved ones heads we cut off there heads of anyone they are close to I mean any one. But it will never happen. I hope I have not upset any one but I was where the 173rd is at now in a time of war. It was decorated with flags and magnets that said "Hero on board" It is called Hummers for Heros and it was all free of charge. They rolled out a red carpet for him before he boarded. He was a little embarrassed but he did get a kick out of it. It also let the whole neighborhood know he was home!!!!

I am so thankful that we are all so strong for our soldiers and each other and most importantly we are all on the same side of this revolting media ploy. We have all stuck together through these past eight months and will continue to hold strong for the rest of this deployment. I know we have had some trying times, and sometimes we didn't all agree, but that is what a family does; bicker when we are upset or irritated and stick together when others threaten our family. May God bless each one of our very special soldiers and bring them home safe and sound. The ones we have lost will never be forgotten and we will all walk taller knowing they were a part of our family. God bless each one of us and keep us safe.

This link was given to me by another Red Devil mom: www2.whittierdailynews.com/search/ci_3132979 Wombats you have come a long way and you have started to round the final turn. As you prepare to go down the final stretch stay in the lead and keep your heads down. Make sure when you do cross the finish line, (and it will be here before you know it!), your shoulders are back and chests are out with pride for what you ALL have done. Because EVERYTIME someone back home asks one of us about; our car magnets, our Blue Star Flags, our yellow ribbons, The Hero Tree, or even the 173rd Airborne/St. Michael medal around my neck and the Guardian Angel pin I wear everyday over my heart, you can bet we ALL stand taller when we talk about YOU! i love all your postings. no one has shown up on my door to hassle me about John's death in Afghanistan. they interviewed everyone before the children and i returned home. on the day of the service one of the stations showed up at my father-in-laws home to interview him. i thought it was wierd when the rest of the family got to the church and told me he was being interviewed, this is as the funeral director is getting us lined up to walk out.. well, of course, we had to wait on those being interviewed to get to the church.. i thought that was very insensitive of the local news. also, there were strict instructions that no one zoom in on me or my children but of course most of the newspapers and newsstations totally disregarded that request. i never gave permission for them to even be at service, and only one station was given permission by my father-in-law.. so, i have no respect for the media anymore. i only hope this mess with our boys and the bodies being burned gets the right attention it needs and then just goes away. God bless all the 173rd men and women and hope you all get home safely.. Don't let this bit of bad press deter the mission at hand!!!!!

In response to our guys in B.co 1/508th, that are getting all the media attention about burning the taliban bodies....My husband is one of the soldiers involved.... from what he told me, and from what I understand, that reporter completely contorted the situation! Yes, our guys did burn the bodies; but this is after being ambushed, loosing 2 buddies along with 2 ANA soldiers, and than after guarding the bodies for over 24 hours, noone claimed them, and they began to smell.... Granted it wasn't the smartest thing to do while a reporter is filming you, but i guess that just shows that they really didn't think they were doing anything wrong!..... In all the media reports they speak of a psychological operations unit; these guys are not affiliated with ours at all, and from what I understand took full advantage of the situation and used the body burning to threaten and taunt the town....... For all of you who are concerned, please just know that that the media has exaggerated this whole situation and that after speaking with my husband I truly believe that this thing will blow over before u know it... It's just so upsetting that after going through so much, this is how our guys make the news! God Bless the sky Soldiers, and hang in there 173rd families!

So many were disturbed by the footage of the burning bodies. True, it was a shocking image. But just what else were our soldiers supposed to do? If the comrades of the fallen taliban did not retrieve the bodies to be laid to rest according to their own religious traditions, were our sons supposed to perform the last rites about which they know nothing on day old rotting corpses? That too is blasphemous to Islam. And the only other option would be to leave the bodies in the desert subjected to the elements and wild animals...the videographer hit paydirt...no matter what our boys chose to do, it would have been all over the news.

I have a son on the 173rd who also served in the initial deployment in Iraq. I am proud that he is a solider serving his country and in this particular unit, although it seems that he has been in distant lands for quite a bit of the last several years now. The end of their deployment will not only be welcome, but now even seems close. On the matter of the news media, I do not hate them and am happy to hear any news from overseas where our soliders are at war. I am more afraid that people will forget that we are even in a war and what our soldiers are going through. Americans need to know what life is like for all of our troops when they are deployed and what a tough job they have. Today, America has the finest Army we have ever had in our history. I was saddened by the footage of the burnging incident, but people should know that war is not a pretty thing. I have not fought in a war, but have been a police officer for 24 years. At our State Police Academy they have posted two sayings. One is that when you look into the abyss, remember that the abyss is looking back into you. And the other, which I am probably not quoting properly, says that when one hunts monsters, they must take care not to become that which they hunt. We are Americans, not the Taliban. Even in war, we are Americans. And as such, we fight and die by a code of honor. Without this, we are nothing. Victory without humanity and honor would be hollow indeed. I remain pround of our soldiers and am confident that if any problems do exist, they will be properly worked out. When writing messages, I think it is important to remember who we are.

I haven't been to the site for a few days. Just wanted to share something on a little brighter note. My son arrived home on leave Tues. He looks wonderful and is very happy to be here. We spent today in the elementary building I work in and he was welcomed with open arms. He spent time in several classrooms taking to the children and answering questions for them. The kids write letters and send packages to him, one of the classrooms is working on Operation Christmas for his platoon. The children are making stockings for the whole platoon and filling them. Most of these children have been following his deployments. They sent things to him when they were in Iraq and have tracked him on maps as part of their maping skills lessons. Next week some of the teachers from his high school have asked him to come in and talk to their classes. He is very humble about the whole thing. I am very proud! I think it is a wonderful way for these children to know that this is real and what a way to learn history!!!!

Hi everyone, I was wondering if I should really get involved with this, but I have decided that somethings need to be said. I do not care for the media. I got a bad taste for them when Michael died. When we returned to our home on Dec 27th here they were - parked on my front lawn, TV cameras and Newspapers. They kept screaming at me as I ran past them "How do you feel Mrs Yashinski?" "How does it feel to lose your son on Christmas Eve?" My husband (Michael's dad) went outside and told them to get out of here but they replied that the constitution protected the press and they had the right to get the story. My husband replied that his son died to give him those rights and that it also gave hime the right to throw him off our property !!! 2 hours later and the police later they were gone. They became angry again when I wouldn't allow them to film his Memorial. I have given few interviews and only with set guidelines. If they break those agreements - I tell them the interview is over. On Oct 31st a crew from ABC will be here to interview me about The Hero Tree and Michael. The producer has already called about this incedent - I have told her it is a taboo subject as the investigation is NOT complete. They have agreed to this. She also has been warned about my feelings about the media. Folks lets not give them any more power. The ancient egyptions believed by saying a name you gave it power and everlasting life. We have the control - lets give them NO power over us. Whatever happens - it will not change our feelings. These are "our children", we love them, we respect them and we are Proud of them. They are our Heroes !!! When I put their names on that Hero Tree I am telling the world - here are true Heroes !!! Love to all. Mommaski

My son met and has been talking to a member of the Afghani police. This man is learning English and he wrote a letter. He asked my son to have me post it somewhere in the US. That is what I would like to do: In the name of God Dear Sir, I would like to tell you about the Afghani National Police and what is happening in Afghanistan. The ANP is here to establish the peace and security of our country. We want to eliminate the terrorists and the remaining Taliban. We do not want to create and motivate the terrorists or harass the innocent. I wish we didn't have to ask for America's help, but we still need it to rid our great country of cruelty and injustice. Establishing the peace and security has a heavy price. Thank you for helping us pay it. If we look to our past, we will see the heavy loads on our people and that we don't want to bother you very much. It is clear that we need your aid to bring and establish the peace and security. Also to help us build hospitals, schools, roads, electricity, and running water. Everything you do is a great help to my people and is good for Afghanistan. It is a good chance for us. Thank you, Barat Ali

This whole thing just makes me sick to my stomach. How can this reporter do this? I think he is a very desperate man just wanting attention. Why should we care anyways. We are trying to help the Afghan people when they dont want help. I mean c'mon people these our people who burn their own children for punishment. They also drug them as well. They dont even care about their children so why should they care that two people were killed cause they were trying to kill our soldiers. So they had to get rid of the bodies so they burned them. I hope this whole thing just blows over but I feel it wont. I am with you Sky Soldiers, All The Way!!! This is all going to get very political.

I posted the message No Sympathy for Taliban…I generally try to keep my opinions to myself, but I guess you could say this issue really struck a nerve. It’s too bad that there is footage of the Taliban bodies being burned…I wish whoever or whatever soldiers were involved; would have taken the camera away and burned the film too…As far as I’m concerned, it is two less Taliban members that the 173rd or any military unit has to worry about...In my opinion the two Taliban members who were burned and then put on television for the world to see… is nothing compared to the footage that was on television worldwide of our own American people dying because of their so called leader. Do you think when they watched our people dye and burn at their hands they had any remorse? Hell no they didn’t… I'll keep the rest of my opinions to myself...Stay Safe 173rd...America Loves You!

Here is my response to the October 1 incident. http://www.snopes.com/rumors/pershing.htm If it is true that General Pershing did the above, he is my hero. I really don't see a problem. The soldiers needed take care of the two bodies within 24hrs as per Islamic law. At the same time psyops took advantage of a good opportunity. There should be a golden rule of never giving a reporter the time of day. They are long on opinion and short on knowledge (quoting Jack Kelly).

i have seen all the footage on tv about the bodies being burned. this supposedly happened the day after my husband, SSG Doles, was killed over there. i don't know if it is the men who had a hand in taking my husbands life, but more power to the men who burned them.. i am upset that they let themselves be taped doing such a thing, but it is no where near as horrendous as the things the taliban has done to our military and to it's own native people over the years.. i hope it wasn't any of the sky soldiers who did this deed but if it was, hope you all get a medal, not a court-martial..

I think you make a very vaild point. There are all kinds of things that happen in time of war; how do you tell right from wrong? Who can judge what has been done? What makes peopel do the things they have done? Most of importantly why the heck would a soldier do it infront of a camera to be broadcast to the world? There are so many unanswered question I have about what has been done. We all have our own opinions about what has been done. I don't critize what the soldiers did, but I do disagree with how they did it. I too believe that all kind of things happen in wartime; there is a time and place for everything, but it is never in front of cameras. I pray that it doesn't make life harder for the rest of the soldiers and that this doesn't start an uprising amongst the locals. God Bless you all.

From today's letter to my son in Afghanistan---There's an issue that may cause some hassles for you since it’s all over the news about some guys from 173rd that were filmed desecrating dead Taliban in violation of Muslim religious beliefs. I saw the video and they burned up a couple of bodies that were killed the night before. It was a pretty dumb thing to do with the news cameras rolling. A lot of 173rd people are blaming the news media and even the Taliban for the bad image this is giving America around the world. I spent a year in a combat zone, I know all kinds of things that happen that you just don’t tell. But who was stupid enough to do this in front of a reporter? You do what you gotta do while you’re out there but you don’t do it for the cameras! I hope they don’t come up with a bunch of bullshit regulations that make your job harder and more dangerous. The guys that did this ought to have their asses kicked for making everyone look bad and increasing the dangers you all face daily. Love Dad

Well as for the allegations... Our boys wouldn't be in that god forsaken country if members of the Taliban wouldn't have came to the US and burned American citizens alive in the Twin Towers...If the taliban members bodies were really burned by our military at least they were already dead and didn't feel the pain and go through the horror that everyone in those buildings did on 9/11 ...Not to mention the pain that all the family members have had to feel when loved ones never returned after being sent to war to protect us from getting burned again by the hundreds because of those as@*oles. Call me insensitive but I feel no sympathy for the charred taliban members...And I'm sure that Mr. Dupont would also want to taunt those freakin idiots if he had to live in Afgahanstan and put up with bullets flying over his head for a year... Keep up the good work 173rd... Skysoldiers are Heros not criminals! We love and support you now and always!

Lets all remember that when the media gets hold of anything that can make our soldiers look bad they run with it. I have read a few articles that indicate that the soldiers were from 173rd, then I watched this video clip and they reported that the soldiers were from the 82nd airborne. Only time and investigation will reveal the real truth. Until then lets pray for the soldiers and families that are caught up in this media report. http://video.msn.com/v/us/v.htm?g=4464799d-2d82-40a1-afdb-12ea94045ef9&f=copy

Hello everyone - I think the best idea that we can do right now is this - Let's wait. First of these are "our children" and as such we love them unconditionally and support them. Let us not be guilty of name calling and trying people in the press. Let us allow the military to do their investigation and get all the facts first. Then we can decide how we feel. While Mr Dupont filmed the burning (which is allowed by Geneva Convention for health reasons only) he did not film the "taunts" that the soldiers later ALLEDGELY used. So why don't we wait before we get all worked up. If it's true, then we can pull together to help these young men and their families. Ya don't throw out the baby with the bath water. Love to all of you and my thoughtsa and prayers as always are with "my children" so far away and in such a dangerous situation. Mommaski

As far as the stories about the burned bodies go, I hope everyone considers the sources - the New York Times and an anti-war Australian journalist. Both have track records as cowardly SOBs who take full advantage of the freedom of the press to dishonestly advance their political agendas. And neither gives a second thought to insulting and doing blatant harm to the very soldiers who protect their freedoms. There will be a lot more on this before it is over, and I have no doubt that the Skysoldiers will be the only ones who acted with courage and honor when it is all in the open.

Article from stars and stripes Cruz died following an accident that was not combat-related Sunday at Orgun-E. More information about the incident, which is reportedly under investigation, was not available. Cruz was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment. Capt. John McDougall said his fellow Red Devil was special because of who he was: a mortar man. “His infantry job required him to be sharp,” he said. “The mortar part required him to be smart.” McDougall said such soldiers are “part mathematician, part muscleman.” McDougall called Cruz “an absolute expert with his weapon.” Cruz demonstrated that early on in the mission in Afghanistan. On May 30, a small group of soldiers whom Cruz was with was ambushed by superior enemy forces from all sides. Cruz responded by firing off 20 rounds to suppress enemy fire. Then he returned to the other soldiers and fired again, killing several enemy combatants with an accurate mortar round. For his efforts that day, he earned the Army Commendation Medal with valor.

You will have to go to www.ebay.com and enter this item number 6519177795 and it will take you to it. It is the recordable message tree.

Have you tried Walgreens for the battery-operated tree? I don't know if they have the Christmas stuff out yet, but I got one there last year.

Since we are talking about socks I have a few questions myself... Do they have to be completely black or completely white? Does it really matter? And second are they allowed to have thermal underwear and if so does that have to be a certain color too? I quite new to all of this but I would love to send stuff to keep my boyfriend warm. thanks for your help and if you want to you can email me with the info.

You will call the Red Cross, and their phone number will be in the phone book, of course. But you are right that you also need to call Rear D. Their number should be on the 173rd's support page. I'll check...if not, or if no one else answers, I'll get back with more information in a few minutes. My prayers are with your family.

One of the best sources for all kinds of outdoor clothing, including socks, is Cabela's -- www.cabelas.com -- and they ship directly to the soldier if you want them to. They have cold weather, wet weather, warm weather -- you name it.

We are in Michigan. If you call him tell them I suggested you call they know me. They have been very helpful getting what they can for me and I am sure he would appreciate the business. He might ship some to you or ship them directly overseas. If he can't do it let me know and I will ship them for you. I just sent 58 pairs of socks to my son's platoon in August. Sara, A good sock to wear in really cold weather is Sealskinz. Just do a google search for sealskinz and then price compare. I was issued a few pairs of them and they are an excellent sock to keep you warm and dry. They are made out of a very breathable material and are excellent for the price. Good luck

I spoke with my son yesterday and he said that it is starting to get cold there and he requested some over the calf wool socks. They can't be too thick or they won't fit in his boots. Also, I don't want to spend too much money for each pair because where he is, he throws them away instead of washing them. I checked the Ranger Joe's website and they don't have socks with a lot of wool. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Once he gets to Kuwait, more then likely, he will tell them where he wants to fly into and they will schedule his flight right then and there at no cost to the family. Casey -- None of our guys were hurt in the earthquake. They felt it a little at Bagram, but everyone is fine. Crystal -- That sounds like something I would do! Call your Rear Detachment. I'm pretty sure the Army will pay for him to come all the way home, but if they do just bring him to one of the "hub" airports, you will be able to buy his ticket and have him pick it up there. My mother bought my tickets when I came home from the hurricane, and I just picked them up at the ticket counter. It'll work out...I'm excited that you will soon see him!

I am in need of some information and hoping that someone on this site can help me. I just accidentally closed my husbands only access to money and he is due to come home on leave any day now. It was the bank's mistake and now they are telling me that they cannot undo anything! I am curious if he is going to need money for flights home, or if the army pays for that, or what? He has no access to money now, and so if he has to pay for these flights, he is screwed. I am also curious if I can buy his ticket from the states and then have him pick it up at the airport. HELP! Anyone who has had someone come home for R&R recently or has a soldier on R&R at home please let me know what the process is, so that I will have peace of mind here knowing that he will be able to come home with out money access. I am so upset right now and feel so helpless as I cannot call him or anyone that knows anything! Thank you to all who share wonderful stories and support on this site. I have never written, but visit every day to boost my moral. I love you all. If you would like to email me personally, feel free: rainyd4y@hotmail.com

So I never did find out how all the went. But if you ever get a chance to ask him, i'd love to know. I sent him a Pirate themed party box with party bags for everyone out at Greyskull. It was a fun idea, but i don't know if they ever got to celebrate it. Anyways, its nice to hear feedback from other people who have soldiers out there with Kent. At least I know something about what they are up to that way. Thanks for the input. - Rebecca

Voline(squad leader with John)'s family is trying to get Johnny's platoon dog from Afghanistan to the kids here in OK.. the Canadian soldiers say they can get Winston to Canada and then one of Voline's brother's will fly up, meet it there after quarantine then fly it to Tulsa for us.. Winston was the little bit of normalcy John had in that distant land and he asked that if anything ever happened to him that SFC. Williams get the dog to his children.. so, of course, i'm hoping it all works out.. for all those asking about the bracelets, someone at rear d is on it.. once i get them, i will be sending them out..whenever you want to visit, give drop me an e-mail or go by rear d at 508th and get my phone number.. Logan and i may come for the welcome home, just depends on our feelings at the time but the b-co guys have said if we can handle it they would like us there.. love to all .. Heather

I'm back in Washington for good (he leaves Italy when he gets back from Afghanistan) but I can still answer questions or forward you to people who know more. I lived there for a little under 3 yrs and had a baby in Italy while he was deployed to Iraq so I have a little bit of knowledge. Maybe you can get a hold of your husband's FRG leader also. To Vietnam Sky Soldier - Thank you so much and thanks to all of the Vietnam Sky Soldiers who have contacted me with places to go to get the "History". As you probably could guess I am a History nut!!! Also as for the Vietnam Tribute Stars - here is what I decided (let me know what you think, please) a Gold Star -on 1 side is 173rd Airborne Brigade. On the other side - Vietnam, the year and the number who died (I really wish I could do each individual name but I don't know if my hands could cut out that many stars, punch them, string ribbon thru them and write them. Not to mention this is a small tree that might would fall over from the weight) and I am going to attach 3 small stars to them - a red one (to represent the parents and wived who sacrificed) a white one (to represent the children left behind) and a blue one (to represent the buddies who lost brothers on a foreign shore). Let me know what you think. I wanted the Vietnam Stars to be different - so that people would notice them and see the sacrifices so many people forget. I thank each and everyone of you - because of you my son grew up in Peace. All my love and prayers Mommaski

I used to read that kind of stuff in the morning paper and say "Aww...that's terrible..I hope they're gonna be ok." These days I wake up to that news and say "Wow! And that didn't cost us a DIME! Rock on!!! That was worth a few bombing raids!!Tell the guys to take a day off!" I know...I'm just evil these days...oh well. I always knew I'd grow into a stuningly bitter old woman someday! Well...not much news here in Ohio....the fall is here, and soon the snow will come, and I will bring out the Nanuk of the north wear until next June! Joel is doing well..he graduates from college Jan '07 with his degree. Right now he's taking an Employment Law course, which has gone right to his head, and he's loving it. I swear he's watched too much law and order at this point. It's kind of cool, cause now I have someone to complain about how much stupid case law there is chocking the life out of our judicial system...not to mention the lastest arrivals to the supreme bench. Cesar is doing great too. I fear that child will be the end of me! He just loves the girls, but at the age of 7 years I should not have little girls coming to my door asking for him! When that happens I cring, and think "What kind of mothers do these girls have?!?! If that were my daughter so help me...!!!" Soooo I sit in fear of the next phase of his childhood. 7 going on 21! Next it'll be "Mom...you and dad need to go out tonight...I'm having frinds over to watch Finding Nemo *Wink Wink*" Oh I'd KILL him! OKies guys I hope you're all in good spirits (cause I know how much you're loving your command..tell them hello from us by the way..ha!), and I look forward to you all coming home SOON! After all what else do I have to do with my vacation time....by the time you guys get back I can go to Italy for a while!!! Ciao Bellos....Much love from JB, Cesare & Me!!!

to the Ezernack family, i am so sorry for your loss. we just buried my husband yesterday and then i click on here today and hear of your loss.. my wounds are still so fresh and yet, my heart breaks again hearing of your tragedy.. i can't tell you how to cope because i am just beginning to cope myself.. but, if you would like to correspond, my e-mail is above. also, be prepared for the stupid anti-war protesters having a little rally on the day you bury your loved one.. they did it here but thankfully, there were VFW motorcycle groups here to drowned out their hate.. i'm sure they will come up to Arlington as well. may god be with your family and again, i'm sorry for your loss.

The military takes care of family expenses when there is a loss of a loved one and travel is involved. You might want to check with the rear detachment on this but in these tragic circumstances the military really steps in to assist and support the loved ones.

If you are looking for a quality, inexpensive 173rd flag, go to ebay. Type 173rd into the search box. You will find two pages of herd items. Scroll down until you see the item, 173rd flag. It sells for under seven dollars. I bought one from this seller last year. It has lasted a year of flying in my front yard. Hope that helps. Airborne

I sent mine to the author of the article, jprime@gannett.com . Mr Prime says there is no fund YET. He also says the family does not have email, so he is forwarding the info to the family.

Heather, Not sure if you received my email earlier in the week or not. I am sorry that I could not get back for John's services, but you know why. I am glad Caroline was able to show her support for us both, that meant alot to me. Know that you are in my heart and mind. As are the kids. I have been reading some of these post, and it appears many have had the same impression of John as I. And they have also been very supportive of you, and I am proud of the community for that. I emailed most of the Geronimo brothers from B Co that I had emails to. It appears at least "Tiny Werline" got it. I hope it gives Logan and Breanna a little comfort knowing they were not the only ones to love their father. I would love for Caroline and I to be able to visit you someday. You will always be our friend and family. I hope you remain as confident as you are, because you are a very strong woman. Again, I am sorry for the loss of your hero. Give my condolences to the kids please.

OOPS sorry I have been contacted by a 173rd friend that I left him hanging !! Sorry !!! My bad!! Go to www.herdpx.com Hope that helps. By the way I have been asked to do some form of tribute on The Hero Tree for the Fallen Sky Soldiers of Vietnam. So I went to look to see what kind of ideas I could get. Well it has taken me 2 days to get thru all the names !!!! For obvious reasons I cannot do an individual star for them (I think my tree would fall over) If you have not looked at this list PLEASE take the time to look at these young men and remember the sacrifices they made. Also I have a question for any of the Virtnam Sky Soldiers - I noticed a GREAT many deaths between Nov 13th and Nov 20th 1967. If it is not too hard could you give me a history lesson? What happened? I was shocked as I saw the dates and kept scrolling and scrolling. I will try to come up with an idea that will be a fitting tribute to honor your fallen brothers. Love to all Mommaski

My husband and I went to SSG John Doles funeral today. Our son is 1/508 Bravo Company, 1st Platoon (Heath Samsel-our hero). We live about 2 hours away. The church was overflowing and the street was lined with people holding flags and young children saluting. There were war protestors (the police kept them a block away) but a group of Harley riders drowned them out with the sound of their motorcycles. It was very heart warming to see the support of a small community.

My way of paying tribute and honor to the Sky Soldiers bravely serving. Then I had people ask if they had to belong to the 173rd, so I added those. Then I added the first Gold Stars - the only ones up are for OUR Fallen Heroes. But each of those Blue Stars represent a wonderful soldier working hard in Afghanistan or Iraq. Most of you know by now what a Gold Star mother or wife is (or you should) but there is such a thing as a Blue Star mother and Blue Star wife (they have their own web sites). By the way are there any 74th LRSD, FSB out there? I have alot of 508th and 503rd. Any one is welcome Stay strong. Love to all "my children" Mommaski

Heard from my husband a few days ago. He is with the 1-508th HHC. He told me they were going out for a while, just in case you haven't heard from your soldier. On a different note, has anyone heard anything about any soldiers being sent to Pakistan to helf with the relief effort? I heard that on the news, but didn't know what divisions were being sent.

To Uncle Sam's Nephew : What a wonderful idea !!! As you can see from the tree I want to get as many Blue Stars on there as I can get, but I WILL NOT forget our Fallen Heroes !!! As you can see, each of those stars are hand cut and uhm... I have looked at the names of the Fallen of Vietnam. There are alot of young men. Can anyone come up with some ideas to honor them? Maybe one side the year and the number lost and the other of course 173rd Airborne Brigade. Or maybe by states? As you can see my tree still has some space so if someone is interested send me your loved ones name, rank and unit. Also I have some on my tree that are from 82nd, 3rd ID, 2nd Marine Div, So the tree is open to all - well accept civilians. I will also add the Fallen from Iraq. Please send more names though - this is a tree to honor ALL our Heroes not just the Fallen !! Love to all and stay strong. Mommaski

RIP and ROP are two different courses. ROP hasn't been around very long. For the young wife or girl friend you might want to check out the Ranger site: www.soc.mil/75thrr/75th_home.htm  If you go to this site it will give you more information click onto overview. RIP is for someone preparing to go to Ranger school and ROP is for an officer or nco assigned to the Ranger Regiment.

My son was at the airbase in Kandahar for the first part of the deployment. He said they wait until they have several soldiers going to one area. He is suppose to leave for R&R this week. He said he will leave the FOB and go to Kandahar wait for a flight out from there. It could be a day it could be several days. He said they sometimes tell you at the last minute that there is room on a flight so they are always ready to go. I have figured anywhere from three to seven days to get to the states. He also told me he might not be able to contact me until he is in the states. Was just about the same way when he came home from Iraq. We got a call from Germany telling us what time to pick him up at the airport. He ended up getting in sooner because all the guys had their BDU's on and they got rushed through on an earlier flight because people gave up their seats on flights to get them home to their families sooner. Hope that helps.

Rebecca, I heard from my son yesterday, SPC Clayton Grigsby. He said everything was fine. He did not know anything about the earthquake. Said they had been on the move and in helicopters so they probably wouldn't have felt it anyway. Word is that they are going to a place for the winter that is out in the boonies---not Greyskull thank goodness. But he said that they had phones and internet so that is good. Hope that this helps you. It had been a while since we had heard from him also. I do know that they are not in Kandahar anymore. Who is your soldier? Just curious as our school has been sending 2nd Platoon letters and goodies and also assigned them to a Christmas box. God Bless Our Soldiers. Kathy

To K. Hamm: It all depends on how long your soldier is detained at Bagram Air Field base. My husband got there on a tuesday and they left to go to Kuwait on Saturday and then left Kuwait to go to Germany on Sunday morning their time. They do have computers with the internet access in Kuwait and it costs 5.00 to use them for a certain amount of time. Also, there is one phone line in Kuwait that most soldiers don't know about -so maybe he will be able to find it to give you a call. Hope that helps

FYI, if you have a store that carries "Dept 56" giftware, they have a Christmas tree, maybe 18-24" tall. It comes in a mailing tube, (obviously is artificial) has ornaments BUT you can also record messages! I found it in Ohio while at a wedding this Summer, it was $25.00( big deal!) I can record greetings to my son, he can decorate it! They had 4 themes available at that time...Haven't seen it since in Washington but maybe you all can find it in your local. Diane

HEY!! Take a step back and look at the last two messages that caused so much chatter back and forth. Have you seen anything else from the two or ONE that sent those messages. I think it is just someone trying to start something just for the sake of starting it and then just sitting back and giggling at what they, or he or she, started. When someone so dark of heart and bereft of morality sends something like the last two messages, JUST IGNORE THEM!!! They are not worthy of our attention. Look at the message, think, and then ignore. It may be hard to do that because most of you great people immediately leap to help someone you think is hurting, which is great, but look at it first and then decide whether or not to respond. Just a thought. Stan Rogers

I haven't been to this web site in a long time the reason being that every time that I would go to it someone was upset about something. It funny how things really don't change. How human nature is so predictable. No one ever really happy not really ever grateful. So worried about what the other person whom they so much love and care for is doing so many thousands of miles away. Your sons, your husbands , your fathers. Your daughter, your mothers your wife's. All these people who so unselfishly give of themselves everyday not for themselves but for the lives of strangers in other countries and for the lives of strangers in this our country. I suppose these people complaining about the drinking, women and men drinking together, and all hell breaking loose would be much happier with our brothers and sisiters, our fathers and our mothers, our husbands and wife's coming home in a body bag. life can truly change in a split second. Ask any family member who has lost a loved one if they would be willing to trade place with all those women complaining about there spouses drinking. You think you have it hard. You all haven't seen your spouses for 7 months. These families will never see there spouses, there children their loves ones. maybe you'd like to trade places with them. Get a reality on you life you all don't realize how good you have it. Adriana.

To all concerned about our guys drinking a beer, please sit back and take a look at what it is your getting upset about, our guys are in a place I can't even imagine being stuck in they are doing a job that would be so very hard to deal with daily, I support our troops and I am thankful if they can find even 1 min. to have some fun and maybe take their mind off of things. Who cares if they are drinking a beer or not drinking a beer, I for one am happy to see a smile from them. I am thankful for all they do for you, me and our country. Please keep in mind that they are there now without their families, they don't have the ways you and I have to wind down and I am sure they have more to wind down from. My thought was good for them and one more prayer to say come home safe. So keep in mind that the few moments of fun they do get are short lived and then it is back to doing their job. How about instead of freaking out you say thank you god for letting them have a few moments of peace.

If you can't even put your REAL name and email address up with your post, you shouldn't be posting! Are you ashamed of what you are saying or something? I dont believe this site is designed to be a bitch session for those who have an issue with the army!!! It is to SUPPORT our soldiers! ALL OF THEM! and if they can have a beer once in awhile, I think that is GREAT! It actually makes me feel a little better because they need to relax once in awhile too! Don't you think they deserve it?? I also highly doubt there would be any chance of them getting DRUNK. It would take more than just a few to get them drunk, and I doubt they would even have enough beer to get two guys drunk! I have no problem with it, but I guess I am "just" a girlfriend, so my opinion doesnt matter as much!!!! right??? Ok, sorry just had to voice my opinion about that. On a much happier note, I got a call from my boyfriend yesterday!!!!! He said they were pretty busy. They just got back from a mission and said that would probably be going out again in a few days...and maybe be gone for 2-3 weeks! He is in c co 1/508th. So if you have some one in there and havent heard from them in awhile, they are probably just busy!! Ok, one more thing, can we please try to have less drama on here??

To : Whatever.com - What is your problem honey? Are you having a bad day? A bad relationship? Just because a man has a beer and sits down next to a single girl does NOT make him a cheat, a shark or any other kind of animal !! It makes him human. Do you really think they would get so drunk that they would have an affair - I don't know about you but the fact that bullets, IEDe and RPGs are out there would definitely kill the mood for me!!! I couldn't get that drunk!!!! And why should you want to punish the single girls - are you incapable of being friends with a guy without sex being involved?!? I have MANY men friends and I have been happily married for 28 years. Are you so insecure that you are not happy unless you have other wives worrying about something stupid!?! They have enough worries without you doing this. Have a heart and consideration for others. Many of these young ladies have not been married long and are facing military life for the first time - they don't need this crap!!! Be happy for these brave men and women that for one brief shining moment they got to forget the war, forget that they are far from those they love, far from home and got to be happy and silly. Ok, I'm sorry if I have hurt your feelings but I am tired of a few people getting on here to gripe about the military, call names and use foul language that just shows a shortage of vocabulary. As to "MY" Sky Soldiers - Party on!! Well whenever you can. Love mommaski

go to www.becksbeer.com -go to the product section and there it shows a list of the beers they produced. In bold print there is a tab for their non alcoholic beer. I agree with Patti. If this beer lets them feel like they are somewhat normal -then we should be happy for them. Now lets get back to supporting our soldiers, because this topic only is bringing them down.

Don't you think that all of our soldiers in Afghanistan deserve a nice cold beer evey once in a while? I hardly think there would be enough alcohol over there for anyone to get drunk and out of hand. I am sure all of the soldiers are looking for any chance to do something that would make them feel like they are living in their normal world. If sitting at a "concert" and drinking a beer gives them some comfort of home, we should all support them. If you can't give your soldier a break and allow them to be "normal" then you must have a problem. Quit being self centered and insecure and take a walk around in their shoes for a while. If you love your soldier, you should be glad to see them indulging in a little enjoyment in the hell hole where they are living.

My husband has also told me about the near beer. He says it is disgusting and it is nonalcholic, but some of the guys like it. Believe that there is nonalcholic beer over there for the soldiers is not being blind -its called trusting your husband! And as far as the comment about the single women -I trust my husband. If I didnt trust him, I wouldnt have married him. I have enough worries throughout my day and I dont need to sit at home and fret about my husband with some single female soldier. The female soldiers are just doing their jobs, most of the time they are there because they are giving food out in the chow halls. Plus, if a soldier got caught messing with one of those women out there, there would be some serious issues for him from the chain of command. So the whole issue here is TRUST!!

OK it's me again that cannot be trusted with the space bar!! Every program has it's kinks, sorry I have to get use to this! Anyhow, have to focus on the positive...We are all Military Families. I don't know about the rest of you, but Vancouver WA is NOT a military town...we have to find support the best we can (FYI for all the 1-508th/HHC) MY Trader Joes sent( via me) an entire case of beef jerky!....John just emailed me and said they got it and what a treat. I didn't even ask for it, I was simply asking IF a certain item was able to be sent via mail-long term. They asked me many questions and the 1-508th/HHC was gifted with 50 pkgs of beef jerky.. Families, all I can say is that I have been in a military family since WW1...nothing really changes, we are blessed with information, thank GOD! Think about our Grandparents that literally had no idea, what, if & when. We as families are gifted with "instant info" please remember that, please respect that. Instant info means our families info will be broadcasted too. Sorry to be on a soapbox, but I pray that if anything happens to my son/yours we will all be here. THAT is why I participate...SUPPORT the Army way. Whether we chose this or not, we are here via someone and are a family, let's conduct ourselves thus-wise...Diane

I am just wondering why soldiers get to drink while they are over in afghanistan. I do not think it is right for them to. I had just looked at the pictures from the 173rdsite and it showed soldiers both woman and men drinking together. How do people think that looks??? I for one do not like it! Not only is it bad to put married woman and men together with single soldiers just looking for some adultry to start!!! Plus for the families who do not agree with drinking at all it puts a worry on their miond!!! I am just asking and I am concerned! I do not feel comfortable with my husband around single girls drinking and getting drunk when I havent seen him in 7 months. That is wrong !!!

Hello, everyone. i just wanted all my friends from the Vicenza community and sky soldiers to know that we made it safely stateside. my yahoo account is messed up right now but as soon as it's fixed, i will get in contact. thanks to everyone, especially the rear d.. without them, i would still be waiting in Vicenza to fly home and bury my dear John. to the bitch that said those horrible things about the rear d, you must be a real coward, you couldn't even put your name.. i am sorry i cursed, but what i am going through right now, the rear d is why things have went so smoothly. i can never repay Capt. MacDougal or SSG. Pier for all their help.. lady, i hope you never have to go through what i am, but know this every rear d soldier would be there in a heartbeat for you. if you really needed something on Friday, you know their are numbers you can call. obviously, you don't stay connected through the frg because every month, they give out any and all numbers for the wives to contact them if they need anything.. so, quit your belly aching and find a more constructive way to use your time.. maybe the men need a four day because they just put on a service Thursday to honor my husband, my children, and myself.. it took as much out of them as it did out of my family. i hope you never badmouth the rear d again, because one day you may need them when you get a knock on your door and are told your world has fallen apart. Rear d-- love and respect to all.. Heather, Logan, and Breanna Doles-permanent members of the sky soldier family..

What a fool we have in our midst. When you attack any soldier's integrity, you attack us all - including your husband's. As one who worked with many Rear D's, I never, ever had a soldier volunteer to stay behind. It is a thankless, neverending job (as you prove with your vent), and it is not a normal soldier mission. These young men and women have been trained to move forward, not sit and assist. And for you to criticize them for what you obviously do not understand, is irresponsible and reprehensible (look it up). You hate the Army? Based on your words alone, I can only assume the feeling is mutual. You have done your husband and his colleagues a terrible injustice by spilling your venom here and I for one am sickened by it. God Bless our Sky Soldiers, especially the Rear D that have our troops' back as well as our family members'. Hang in there guys - you apparently have one family member in the Herd that is unappreciative. Big deal!

Regarding the comments made toward Rear D: They are soldiers just like every other soldier. They are still fighting the war just like the ones in Afghanistan or Iraq. They might not be over there physically, but we would not be able to do this without them. Just like the families of soldiers. We are fighting this war too, supporting our men. We need to respect them all for what they do and not complain about what they don't do. They have enough to worry about without people bringing them down. My soldier is in Afghanistan with the 508th and they are all doing a great job. God bless all our soldiers!!!

Recently I met Qunincy Curtis (RD) at Derek Hines' funeral. He was the escort officer for Derek after escorting Josh Hyland home. Quincy wasn't even back to Italy from Josh's funeral before getting the call for Derek. I can assure you Quincy Curtis is not fat, nor lazy, or a slacker. He is a fine young man doing his job. I can also assure you that he would much rather be in Afghanistan with his unit but has been tasked with the important job of taking care of families and problems that might arise while our loved ones are deployed. Please don't be so quick to condemn the rear detachment - they are there for you. I have had the opportunity to watch them in action and trust me when I say - they do a fine job and they are the kind of men you want taking care of you in trying times. My best to you and I pray your life gets easier.

To : the rear is lazy (yes that is what it says). Goodness honey, you sound so frustrated !!! I know the military does not work on a fast pace (believe me I know). Sometimes the watch word is - "Hurry up and wait". But you get more flies with honey then with vinegar !!! I have learned over 46 years (my God I am old!!!) that yelling and bitching gets you nothing but an ulcer. How long have you been an Army wife? Is your problem only something that can be solved by Rear D? I have a contact in Rear D and he is not lazy!! But he has been fielding a lot of calls from wives and fiancees that have not heard from their loved one in a while and they want them (the rear D) to make them get in contact, well this is not their job!! But it takes time away from the families that need real help, such as money concerns. I was also a little disappointed in you for telling someone else that disagreed with you that it was "none of their Bizz". Well if you truely felt that way why did you post your voice in a forum such as this? I think you are probably frustrated and just needed to vent - and that is ok, but, you must expect people to not always agree with you. Next time post - Need To Vent. Then we will have more sympathy for your problem and might come up with solutions to help you. Also people if you are truly looking for help or a kind ear - post your name or a real email address (you can use a nickname). I personally don't like typing " To: None of Your Concern". To my special Sky Soldier who is home on R&R - you have fun, but be careful diving !! To the rest of my "Children" stay safe, take care and watch out for each other. My love to you all. Mommaski

I have to say I take some serious offense to the comments made about the Rear D guys. Those men are still our skysoldiers whether they are deployed or not. Most of them if not all of them HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED!!!! And just because they are not at your beck and call does NOT make them fat, lazy or otherwise. Right now one of our Rear D soldiers is escorting the body of SSG Doles home. How's that for lazy!!!!! Listen to yourself!!! Give these people a break. They deserve it. And further more you know you do have an FRG right??? I dont know about you but our FRG HELPS EACH OTHER OUT!!! And if they can't, they find someone who can. It seems to me if you got involved and got to know your FRG and Rear D you would have a bit more help and response. And NO your husband can't get a four day right now. How would you feel GOD FORBID, you husband was lally gagging around and they got attacked because he wasn't prepared, and because he was on a break??? Thats ridiculous. They're at war. Whether they're asleep or awake, they're at war. And our Rear D is not ALWAYS out to lunch. Just because you have a bad experience does not mean they should ne condemned for eternity. Get a GRIP!!!

One more piece of advice...If your guy doesn't want to get help, talk to some Vietnam Vets, and have them talk to him. They will listen to those vets because they respect them so much. To all you veterans: I can't tell you how much your wisdom, kindness and support helps this generation of warriors and their families. I truly don't know what we would do without you. Thank you for your service then, and now.

I finally got an email from Daymean today. I havent been able to hear from him since May! He is alright just really busy. He said that he doesn't get much free time and isn't normally allowed internet access. He is in 1/508 HHC. I'm just truly grateful I was finally able to hear him say that he is alright. The only way I've been able to know for the past months was this website and through people I have met through here that keep me posted when they hear from their soliders. It's amazing how just an email can completely turn your day around! God Bless our soliders and all of you!

Danielle, it is so wonderful to know that that picture brought joy to you. My son thought alot of Schafer and was really devasted by his death. Schafer meant alot to those guys. You can also tell by the photo that they were having lots of fun. Don't know who sent them that 'pogo stick' but they were just like a bunch of kids trying to see how high they could make it jump. God Bless you and your family.

I cannot remember the title, but look for a book by Patricia Mason. Her husband was in Vietnam, so it is geared to that war, but so much is the same. That book was the most helpful of many I read. I know this is hard, but hang in there...it will get better.

Hello all. I am a fiance of a Soldier formerly of the 173rd, he was medically discharged about 2 months ago because he was hurt in Afghanistan. I check these boards everyday because I like to be able to give comfort when needed to the spouses, families, and friends who need an ear to listen. Now I am asking for your help. My fiance is not the same person that he was before he left for deployment, and I'm not sure how to handle this. I was wondering if anyone knew of a book that I would be able to buy to try and understand. Please help, I need it pretty bad right now.

Anyone heard from 503rd Able Co. 2nd Platoon lately? The Viet Nam Moving Wall is in our town this week. I worked the Art Exhibit two nights and the soldier that has the photographs on display was with the 173rd 2-503 while there. Hoiser I think is his name. Mr. Bradley you can probably correct me here. It has been very interesting but haunting needless to say. Reliving what I grew up with and the pains of having a son in a war now. Looking at the pictures of then and now----the eyes are the same. God Bless Our Soldiers.

The packages are x-rayed from what I understand. Not acknowledging that there is some sort of "electronic device" in a package is not exactly a good idea and probably why some packages are tampered with. I have NEVER insured a package & have sent a laptop computer, uninsured, with no problems at all.

as far as listing "an electronic device" on the customs form. I dont believe that would be a good idea and especially not to insure it. Most electronic devices are more expensive and others would be interested to know what is in the package with that listing. I would list things on the custom form that are an every day occurrence for the soldiers

My soldier left his base yesterday for Kuwait, he went directly from Kandahar. He was able to email from Kuwait and said there weren't any phones to call from. But he was able to give us a time that he would be leaving Kuwait, and a time that he would arrive into our hometown. I know you're excited and anxious to hear from him. I hope he gets there soon!

For the person inquiring about how long it takes the soldiers to get home for leave, my soldier got to Kuwait yesterday, left at 9pm Kuwait time today, and will be home tomorrow evening. Three days total seems to be about the average. I hope that helps. Have a great time with your soldier!

For those of us who have been through "the other war" I agree with you 100%. You took the words right out of my mouth. Thank you for saying it for me too.
