Soldiers have a lot of moving parts. They require regular maintenance. They are human beings, not machines. They will do amazing things if they know you care about them.

A BIG thank you to the individual who posted the story link of A Company having tea. Ssg Haynes is my son and it did my heart good to see his name in print. I felt his frustration as well. The job our soldiers have been called upon to do is certainly not an easy one. May God grant peace and comfort to the hurting families of our fallen and wounded. We are here to support and pray...

I don't post much on here but I thought everyone would like to read this. I got it in an e-mail today. This is the best I have seen or heard about the war in Iraq. Don't Close Your Blinds - This one really makes you stop and think A letter to the Editor, in the Odessa American, Odessa, TX. The other day, our nine year old son wanted to know why we were at war ... My husband looked at our son and then looked at me. My husband and I were in the Army during the Gulf War and we would be honored to serve and defend our Country again today. I knew that my husband would give his a good explanation. My husband thought for a few minutes and then told our son to stand in front of our living room window. He said, "Son, stand there and tell me what you see?" "I see trees and cars and our neighbors' houses," he replied. "OK, now I want you to pretend that our house and our yard is the United States of America and you are President Bush." Our son giggled and said, "OK." "Now son, I want you to look out the window and pretend that every house and yard on this block is a different country," my husband said. "OK, Dad, I'm pretending." "Now I want you to stand there and look out the window and pretend to see Saddam come out of his house with his wife. He has her by the hair and is hitting her. You see her bleeding and crying. He hits her in the face, he throws her to the ground and starts to kick her to death. Their children run out and are afraid to stop him. They are screaming and crying. They are watching all this, but they can do nothing because they are afraid of their father. You see all of this, so. ... What do you do? "Dad?" "What do you do, son?" "I'd call the police, Dad." "OK. Pretend the police are the United Nations. They take your call. They listen to you explain what you know and saw, but they refuse to hlep. What do you do then, son?" "Dad, . . . . . . . but the police are supposed to HELP!" Our son starts to tremble and whine. "They don't want to help, son, because they say it is not their place or your place to get involved and that you should stay out of it," my husband says. "But dad, . . . he is killing her!", our son exclaims. "I know he is, son, but the police tell you to stay out of it. Now I want you to look out that window and pretend you see our neighbor, who you're pretending is Saddam, turn around and do the same thing to his children." "Daddy! . . . . he KILLS them?" "Yes, son, he does. What do you do?" "Well, if the police don't want to help, I will go and ask my neighbor to help me stop him," our son says. "Son, our next door neighbor also sees what is happening and refuses to get involved as well. He refuses to open the door and help you stop Saddam," my husband says. "But Dad, I NEED help!!! I can't stop him by myself!!" "WHAT DO YOU DO, SON?" Our son starts to cry. "OK, no one wants to help you, the man across the street - Saddam - saw you ask for help and saw that no one would help you stop him. He stands taller and puffs out his chest. Guess what he does next, son?" "What, Daddy? "He walks across the street to the old lady's house and breaks down her door and drags her out, steals all her stuff and sets her house on fire and then. . . he kills her. He turns around and sees you standing at the window and laughs at you. WHAT DO YOU DO?" "Daddy. . . . . " WHAT DO YOU DO?" Our son is crying and he looks down and he whispers, "I'd close the blinds, Daddy." My husband looks at our son with tears in his eyes and asks him, "Why?" "Because, Daddy . . . . the police are supposed to HELP people who need them. . . but these police won't help . . . . You always say that neighbors are supposed to HELP neighbors, but they won't help either . . . I can't look out my window and just watch him do all these terrible things, and, . . . . do nothing . . . so . . . I'm just going to close the blinds . . . .so I can't see what he's doing . . . . . . . and I'm going to pretend that it is not happening." This is too much for me. I start to cry. My husband looks at our nine-year-old son standing in the window, looking pitiful and ashamed at his answers to my husband's questions, and he says . . . "Son." "Yes, Daddy." "Open the blinds, because that man . . . he's at YOUR front door . . WHAT DO YOU DO?" Our son looks at his father, anger and defiance in his eyes. He balls up his tiny fists and looks his father square in the eyes, without hesitation he says: "I DEFEND OUR FAMILY DAD!! I'M NOT GONNA LET HIM HURT MOMMY OR MY SISTER, DAD!!! I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM, DAD, I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM!!!!!" A tear rolls down my husband's cheek and he grabs our son to his chest and hugs him tight, and says, ". . . it's too late to fight him, he's toostrong and he's already at YOUR front door, son . . . you should have stopped him BEFORE he killed his wife, and his children and the old lady across the way. You HAVE to do what is right, even if you have to do it alone, before it is too late," my husband whispers. THAT scenario I just gave you is WHY we are at war with Iraq. When good men stand by and let evil happen, son, thinking the greatest evil won't affect them, THAT is one of the greatest atrocities in the world." "YOU MUST NEVER BE TOO AFRAID TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT, EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO DO IT ALONE! BE PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN! BE PROUD OF OUR TROOPS!! SUPPORT THEM!! SUPPORT AMERICA SO THAT IN THE FUTURE OUR CHILDREN WILL NEVER HAVE TO CLOSE THEIR BLINDS . . . " GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!! Steven R. Chandler, CMSgt. 332 ELRS / Vehicle Management Flight Balad Air Base, Iraq This should be printed in every newspaper and posted in every school in America. Of course, that won't happen, so we'll use the Internet. If your blinds are closed, do nothing with this E-mail. If they are open, you know what to do.

I have sent 1 piece of mail insured & had no problems getting it to point B, but that was a while back. As for now, I just sent another expensive package, insured, today. I guess I will have to see if it makes it there. I inquired at the post office & they just told me to hold on to my P.O. receipt, the customs form, the insurance receipt, and the receipt for the purchase from the store. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Has anyone had any trouble with insured packages. a very expensive package we insured and sent never made it. We filed all the forms with the post office, including receipts, and are now in a battle to get reimbursed. they apparently need something from the army and my son, who is in the middle of nowhere, etc. This is a nightmare. Has anyone else had to deal with this?

We were very blessed to have our son home for the past two weeks and enjoyed every minute. When our daughter said the blessing at our Thanksgiving table our son - who normally never says anything - added at the end "please bless those that can't be with their families today". During his time with us it was almost like the roles were reversed. He checked the computer several times a day to see if there were any updates from his fellow soldiers and was extremely saddened to hear of the most recent loss. The love, concern, and caring that our soldiers feel for each other is admirable. It gives me comfort that even though our son is not with us he is with his other family - his fellow soldiers.

Well I took my husband to the airport this morning to go back to Afghanistan. So I had him for 2 weeks!!!!! Our time together was wonderful. Thanksgiving was bittersweet. We learned of Spc Steyart death the night before. Actually I saw it on this site. The look on his face when I read his name broke my heart. They were in the same platoon together. He showed me a pic of Spc Steyart that he had on the his laptop. So needless to say, although happy to be at home, he was quite ready to get back to his guys. I didnt know Spc Steyart, but my heart goes out to his family and friends. And of course to our boys over there in Bravo Company 1/508th. I keep telling myself we're in the homestretch. And pray to God the next few months go smoothly. To the families of all our fallen soldiers, May God Bless You, and be with you this holiday season and always. Your soldiers will NEVER be forgotten by me or my husband. God Bless Our Skysoldiers!!!!!

I want to send a shout out to Sindy Beiderman of American Canyon, CA. She has been such a blessing to my son in 1/508. Sindy started a group called ACTS, American Canyon Troup Support. They support troops in Iraq and Afghanistan with packages many times a year. As I was getting ready to send my son a tree with ornaments and lights and all the rest of the stuff he called home to say he had already received one from Sindy. She works so hard and does it all with donations and I'm sure plenty out of her own pocket. So I just wanted to say THANK YOU SINDY! Check out the website at www.applepiepatriots.com and click on ACTS. Merry CHRISTmas and GOD bless to all, especially the men and women so far from home.

As they prepare for Christmas, I can only wish that they will see the joy in the season and hold onto all the great memories of holidays past with their fathers.. I have just returned to this site after the loss of my mother, my son's grandmother. My daughter-in-law used Red Cross to get the message to him and was surprised at how soon he got the message. Thanks Red Cross. Although he was able to make contact with his wife he has yet to call home. I know his heart is aching in need to talk with his family. I pray that he stays focused knowing that all has been taken care of here and with him in our prayers. We pinned a yellow ribbon with a flag on her beautiful pink suit for him. I know that she is watching over him now. And to Cristina what a beautiful prayer!!! May I repeat your words "I pray God would go before your paths and you would lean on his understanding. I pray the yoke of the enemy's plans would be crushed and destroyed and that you would all continue to come out on top victoriously." And my condolences to our recent lost soldier. May God Bless his family in their time of sorrow. May God Bless Our Soldiers. Kathy

I don't have much to say, rather I just miss my soldier and have no one to share it with. I'm so proud of the guys and proud to be able to share to all those who have no clue what's going on in Afghanistan all that I've gotten to learn. I hope hope that the next unit he goes to will have something SIMILAR to this. I know it takes someone with a lot of dedication and I've never been able to use anything like this. It's great. I guess we've only got a couple more months to get through. To those guys who care to check this... you all are awesome and though we miss you till it hurts... we're truly proud of you and the job you're doing. I pray God would go before your paths and you would lean on his understanding. I pray the yoke of the enemy's plans would be crushed and destroyed and that you would all continue to come out on top victoriously. We love you... even those who served in the past.

Thank you 173rd for the sacrific you are making for us soiled people. I also listened to the new song the 8th of November and would like to know more about that day or is it just a song. It´s right before christmas and I want everyone to remeber our fallen hero Damion Campbell. I miss him like crazy and pray for him every day. I also pray for his family and friends. Christmas will be different this year without him but I know he will ALWAYS BE WITH US! He will always have a place in my heart! I love you Damion!

Hello everyone, Funeral services are still pending for our fallen hero Spc Matthew Steyart. It is time to take a deep breath .... and get back on track. Christmas is coming and we have Heros that are far from their families. Take the time to send a card to your loved one's unit !! Take the time to remember the ones who also serve - parents, spouses, children, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. They need are prayers of strength as they gather around a tree where someone is missing. Take the time to remember the families of the fallen Heroes - this is a time of incredable sadness. We need your prayers for an inner peace. Especially remember the Dole children - they face a Christmas without a father. Pray that for them the magic of Christmas is not forver lost. We are now counting down the days until out Heroes come home. Our ONLY duty is to support them and each other. This site is a gift and a privledge not a right. Most units have nothing even close to what we have here. Take the time to ask yourself - "what would it be like if I could not come here?" Then say THANK YOU Mr Bradley for the wonderful gift of this site, your time and your knowledge. Be thankful for what you have, take the time to be postive. Life is very short - don't let the last thing you say be negative. So often I see the lovely Italian girls write on this site of their fears and their suggestions, and sometimes it is obvious that they are having difficulty with our very difficult language. When you are frightened it is amazing how quickly a word can leave your head (for me it's just cause I'm old). Maybe one of you young ladies out there can volunteer to either be the contact for those who need help or be an unofficial translater to the rest of us. Most importantly - to our Sky Soldiers - we love you, we are thinking of you and we pray for you and your families. Take care, stay safe and stay strong. Love to all. Mommaski

If you all don't remember November 23 one of our soldiers was Killed and his families life is changed forever. I have been coming to this website hoping to see more condolences to the family, and I am ashamed to say that I have only counted 4. Hopefully His family has not come here for the love and support that Mr. Bradley intented this site to be for. Come on everyone lets move on and show the love and concern that we all hope will be there, if we are ever unfortunate enough to have to endure.

I am going to find a different Web Site since this one seems to have nothing but bickering on here, There are alot of great people on here but people can't just seem to let something go.I thought this was all about the troops and our Men and Women? This isn't about us, it's about our men and women out there!!! It's Mr. Bradleys site and frankly if he is asking for people to be respectful, then why is it always have to be such a discussion on this website? Why don't people just email him instead of posting it on this website? I speak 3 different languages, including Italian, and I am Native American, not that has anything to do with it, but I think you get the point. I just really like this website, but I am so sick and tired of people going back and forth with bickering. Can't we just focus and get along? Does someone always have to have the last word in? I am not here to offend anyone, I just wish it would stop. Thanks Mr. Bradley for everything, You are awesome and much appreciated!!! :) I hope this gets back to what it's really about, OUR TROOPS!!!

As far as the italian writings go.. I agree with the proud father and the old soldier. We appreciate all the italians have done and will continue to do for our soldiers. It is just almost out of respect that we all know what the other one is saying on this site. Maybe if italians would like to answer a question in their mother language they can trade email sites and correspond that way. I also used the translation page that was given, and was also still very confused. It just puts everyone more at ease when we know what is exactly being said. God Bless our Troops.

I was just wishing that the messages as mentioned below (about writing in Italian) were originally written in English because there may have been a suggestion mentioned, that I could've found useful (and perhaps other people too). I don't think there is any ill will spread on this site towards the Italian people. I think the overall intent was this - if you have a helpful tip, please share it with us all, we might need it too. To others interested, here's a helpful translation website: http://babelfish.altavista.com/ As for Mr. Bradley's words, he's just looking out for our sons, brothers, husbands, etc.

Hello everyone, I believe the reason for writing in English is so the webmaster and everyone else knows what is going on. Not to be rude. We are dealing with sensitive issues. Information about our family and friends in the Armed forces. It is like playing poker and half the players speaking another language and the rest wondering what they are saying. We can get through this peacefully. Without offending anyone. GOD BLESS YOU ALL. John

To our Italian friends on this site - please don't be offended or think that those of us here in the States do not thank God everyday for your support of our men and women in your country. We have had the good pleasure to have our soldiers living in your neighborhoods for many years and you have always supported and loved us. I'm sure Mr. Bradley is concerned that whatever is posted on this site is supportive and not attacking our soldiers, or even giving away information that we have all been careful not to post. Since he, like me, has not had the opportunity to learn your language, this is nearly impossible. It's a difficult task to monitor everything that goes here each day and although I tried to use one of the interpretation sites to understand the Italian posts, it didn't do me much good. Please understand - do not take it as anything negative toward you personnally or your country's wonderful hospitality. Thank you for being with us on this site and thank you for caring as much about our young warriors as we care ourselves. May God Bless!

I may be the only one that feels this way, but, I was very disappointed yesterday at the lack of coverage by the news stations about our soldiers fighting the war in Afghan. and being away from their families on Thanksgiving. It all seemed to be about the Iraq war and how the soldiers there were coping with the holiday away from home. I sure wish they would have alternated between Iraq and Afghan to give our soldiers a chance to say hello to their families. I was comforted by my soldier who called to say that everything was OK and that they all had plenty of Turkey, even in the most remote areas of the country. They all managed to have a good turkey dinner.

I think you do a WONDERFUL service with your site but sometimes you get carried away. If people are being mean spirted or nasty, or constantly talking about bad things I can see intervening but another language - be thankful that someone is finding comfort on the site. If this is the worst thing that happens to us today we all need to be very thankful.

Ciao italian army wife.

I was able to track down and get a hold of Pat Jacobs this weekend. I talked with her for quite a while and what a lady I must say! Without her knowning about it, someone in her "Santa" group contacted the paper and told them about her. She agreed to the interview not having any idea or wanting the attention drawn to her, that it would snowball (sorry) like it has. Due to her schedule, Pat is not able to come to this site anymore. I told her of your messages and she is VERY appreciative of all your kind words and how you want to help. Pat had given the interview a while ago and unfortunately by the time the paper finally ran the article, the boxes were already on the way to our warriors. EVERYTHING had been done! She worked very hard to make this happen so that it might be a little nicer for our men and women this holiday season. For those of us that would like to help other soldiers, Pat did mention another site that she said was started by a General's wife. Here is the link: www.giftsforheros.net God Bless you Pat! To the 173rd family, have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving, especially the WOMBATS 1/508 Alpha Co. 3rd Platoon. You are always in our hearts and thoughts. Stay WARM, Stay TOGETHER, Stay SAFE, and STAY GOLD!

Also just wanted to let you know that a few weeks back I sent an email to a soup company Bear Creek Soups, which I have been sending to my son and shared where their product was going and how it was a comfort to be able to send something that would make my son's life a little more comfortable, I never even thought they would reply. But yesterday I recieved a large box with 30 packages in it they just wanted to help support our soldiers. It did my heart good to know that people care about our soldiers and just want to show their appreciation. thought this would encourage you all. liz spence

There are three options for flying your pets, at least with Delta, which is with whom I'm flying...One is only an option if you have a very small pet, they can fly in the cabin with you if they can fit in a carrier that fits in front of the seat in front of you. The second option is to check the pet as luggage...I was quoted $110 per pet for that, but its only an option if it won't get below 45 degrees at any of the stops because they may have to be on the tarmac for some time and can get hypothermia. The third option with Delta is to fly them in the "Pet First" program which treats them as cargo and they are flown in pressurized, temperature controlled areas, but are not subject to the temperature restrictions. This service costs more, although I don't know exactly how much.

I flew my dog back to the states the beginning of this year in March and he flew down with the luggage. I was going to take him back to Italy with me in Feb, but it is going to be too cold to fly him with the luggage. He is too big to fly in the cabin. He wont fit under the seat. I am just going to have to keep him with my parents. I also haven't heard from my husband in 3 weeks. He is 508th HHC. I have gotten a short emails from him a few times, but no phone call or anything. Hopefully they will slow down and have some down time soon.

Thanks Jo. It's just really hard waiting to hear news. It makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one who's waiting. My soldier told me things would be slowing down and he'd have more free time with winter coming. I never expected to hear from him even less!!! Hopefully he's right though and they'll be back soon. Thanks again!

I just booked my ticket for the most likely date to lock in a fare. if I have to change it, it costs me $200 plus the change in fare to change it. There are lots of cheap tickets to Europe from major airports...I have found the part of the trip that adds the most cost is getting from where I live to a major hub for the international flight....I bought my ticket already, jsut for a date I'm fairly sure my husband will be home, and its on delta (I'm bringing pets and wanted one airline the entire way) and was in the $700-800 range round trip.

Check Shermanstravel.com and travelocity.com for cheap flights to Europe. Airfrance has one for 668$ and United and Lufthansa have some from NY to London for 293$. From london to Venice or Verona you can find flights for as low as 19 Euros. Then another one from NY to Madrid for 448$ and you can check Ryaniar.com for tickets from Madrid and London to Verona (sometimes you could pay just 1 EURO plus taxes!!!!) Remember, If you are going to Italy after Chrismast, better if you do so after January 6 because it is holiday in Italy and flights are more expensive. b

To Melissa, I think I have some information for you about your soggiorno paperwork. If you don't have your soggiorno and you are trying to go back to Italy. the CARABINIERI will ask you for a roundtrip ticket. You don't need the visa, because in the plane they will give you a European Visa that you have to fill put with your personal information (name, adress in Italy,...) and you can use that as long as you stay in Italy less than 90 days. It 's a tourist visa. If you are thinking about staying in Italy longer, you have to go to the LEGAL OFFICE on post and tell them that you need the soggiorno paperworks done within 90 days. I have a good friend in Italy (Padova) and her dad is a Carabinieri, I could ask her for some information other than this I am giving to you. I hope it helps you. Have a nice day, Beatriz Barreca

I have a bracelet I ordered from a lady online that is called the "deployment bracelet". It has my husbands name on it with a red, white, and blue schwarski crystal on the sides of his name. Then I chose to have three charms put on it. One says "army", one is a silver heart that has the american flag in the heart, and the third one is a silver ribbon. I wear that every day and people are always asking me what the bracelet is for.. its a great way to be able to talk about my husband :o)

To J's Mom: I also have the yellow ribbon mag. on my car, along with airborne wings. We have a Service Flag in our front window. We have had a yellow bow on the mailbox since the boys went into Iraq, of course it has been replaced countless times! Everyday, I wear a flag pin with a yellow ribbon underneath. Recently I found charms at the local craft store that included the yellow ribbon, and the service branch names. I put them on a silver chain and wear them it all the time. When our son was in Iraq we left an extra Christmas tree up that year until he came home to visit in April. That was great fun to see the smile on his face when he saw the tree and his gifts still waiting for him. Of course we will put the extra tree up for him this year and it will remain until he returns home in the spring. I have pictures and a big yellow bow in my office at work. However you choose to show your support will be appreciated by your soldier....it's just important that they know they are not forgotten!

To Rebecca: It is 2nd Platoon that you are asking about. I put out a list for people in my community to adopt a soldier for Christmas. It was overwhelming the response that I got. I had to double up and we had enough for extra mailing to single soldiers. I put out a list of things that they needed--socks, handwarmners, head lights, gloves, stocking caps, snacks, stockings, hand held games, batteries, magazines, books, CD's, DVD's etc. So I'm not sure exactly what each person sent. My daughter and I sent small Christmas Trees to Gilbert and Grigsby along with items of need all wrapped. I think that even if they get doubles of anything they will share with the others. I know that is what my son does. They are just a great group of guys!!!!!! So I would say that if you want to put together a package for them anything that you send to them will be appreciated. Let's give them a as good a Christmas that we can give them for the situation and let them know that we appeciate them tremendously. Thank you Rebecca for what you are doing. God Bless Our Soldiers. Here is the copy of the letter: Thursday, May 05, 2005 Posted: 10:19 am CDT The basket in the Narthex is for the collection of items which Joe Clinard is shipping to our friends serving in the military. Here is a recent email letter from Jeremiah Minor to family and friends, to give you some idea of the need. “Well, I am here in yet another third world country and its worse than the last one I was in. The locals aren’t so dissimilar than the Iraqi’s save for language. Their customs and actions for the better part are alike. I have started to get used to the time change & weather, but I think the altitude will take a bit getting used to. When you run its like breathing through a straw and you mouth fills with mucus from all the dust in the air. I am working with the HQ element as of now, my job basically clearing air space and send air support to troop in contact. The other part of my job is building up police stations and personnel like I did in Iraq. Pretty much I am busy all the time. I gather things will slow down in a few months one things are established. Here is a list of items I could use: I live in a leaky shack so if you could each send like a bottle of caulk so I can seal the edges and keep water out that would be great. I of course will be behind in up to date music so if you come across the new Now cd send me a copy of it and anything in rap, R&B, dance, and techno and I am misspelling her name but is Sarah McKennditt who sing the mummers dance and a few other calming songs, so if ya come across her cds please send em my way. Some Clavin Klein lotions, my face and hands are so dried out. Gameboy games for ds or sp systems. Foods, I like old time country lemonade with strawberry, Power Aids red white and blue, Gobstopper, Nerds, Sweet Tarts, Carmello, and reese’s candy, Tostitos and holt salsa, microwavable bowels of mac and cheese and other things go stick in the microwave. If ya come across anything else ya think I might like feel free to send it my way. Thank you all so much for our support and prayers. I love and miss you all very much. Your family and friend at war, SPC Minor, Jeremiah L. (JAY) 173rd (ABN BDE- Afghanistan Jeremiah was in on capturing Sadam Hussein and may be on a mission to capture BinLadden. He is in Special Forces and has been training for this mission for about a year before being deployed.

To J's Mom--I have the service star lapel pin that I wear everyday. My students often ask what it is for and I tell them what it means. I also reach for it at different times of the day and when I rub it I say a little prayer for my son and the other soldiers. This little pin has sure helped me. I also have adults ask what it is for. Especially if I am dressed and the pin is obviously not matching jewelry. It is just my way of showing my pride and also feeling like I am closer to my son throughout the day. With the service star and ribbon magnet on the car, the flag out front, the yellow ribbon on the porch column, the service star flag hanging in my front door window, and the yellow ribbon on my door at school with the service star also people pretty well know that I am supporting my soldier. Hello everyone, Had a wonderful Veteren's Day yesterday !!!! Learned alot too. The first Veteran's Day celebration and parade held was held in - yep you guessed it Birmingham, Alabama !!!! Today it is still the largest in the U.S. People come from all over to participate - yesterday as far away as Alaska and Hawaii !!! Gold Star Mothers were number 408 in the parade - which put us near the front. There were over 1280 participants !!! It taks over 3 hours for the parade to pass you by. At the special luncheon before the parade the only place I have seen more stars - is The Hero Tree !!! Our Guest Speaker was Lt General Honre - is this guy a HOOT !!! He was so funny and so dynamic !!! By the time he ended speaking I think we were all motivated and wanted to join up!!! The basis of his speech was although he appreciates the yellow ribbons and The Hero Tree (yes he had heard of it !!) and people sending baby wipes. He said that if we really wanted to help to get off our butts and fight for Veteran's rights, to fight for the families that made the ultimate sacrifice and to support the families that fight every day in a war they get no credit for !!! And please no more baby wipes, they have enough cleaning supplies !!! So later I told him all about this site that Mr Bradley runs. About how we support each other and listen to each other. He said "Good for you guys!!! That's what I am talking about - SUPPORT! Real support, not lip service." So I wrote down the site for him and told him to visit anytime he wanted. Because as we all know - Sky Soldiers are the BEST !!! Love to all. Mommaski

I know different platoons do different things, but "things" seem to be okay with my son's group of guys.

Today, literally THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of citizens turned out this beautiful fall morning, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to honor and salute our veterans and all of those currently serving, in our annual Veteran's Day parade! F-16 fighter jets, doing a high-speed low-level pass, and WW-II vintage aircraft also doing a fly-over, kicking the celebration off to a HUGE start! American Flags waving! Bands from all over Green County (what we call this part of our State) playing! Adults and teenagers and kids alike literally bursting with pride! . . . . . . There were very, very few dry eyes among the spectators. HOOAH!!!!

Hello everyone !!! It's been awhile, hasn't it? I have been busy getting ready for the Veteran's Day celebration here in Alabama. The interview will only be shown here in Alabama on NBC, apparently each state will have their own people on. They are sending me a copy and my husband will be transferring it to DVD when it arrives. I will be also trying to send some stills from the interview to Mr Bradley to post (as he and my husband say - video takes up to much space !!! And it must never be forgotten that this site is for "Our Sky Soldiers" I am very proud of The Hero Tree because each star represents our best and finest!!! It also represents the cost of Freedom both now and in the past. As we stand strong in our support of our troops today it is also important to remember and thank our Veterans of yesterday. Without them, where would we be today? So I wish everyone a peaceful Veteran's Day. And I thank each and everyone of you. You are all my Heroes - Thank you for making it possible for my son to grow up knowing only peace. He may have died in war but he knew only peace as a child. To "My Sky Soldiers" stay safe, take care and stay strong. To all you families out there - stand tall and proud, your loved ones walk with the mighty. I am so Proud of all of you. All my love Mommaski

To the Italians: I am moving to Italy next month. I have been studying Italian in the States all year and want to continue in Italy. I love your beautiful country and have met so many friendly people when I have visited. When I am in Italy, I want to be able to talk in Italian rather than expect people to speak to me in English. Is there anyone who would be willing to tutor me or arrange an exchange (I work with you on English and you work with me on Italian)? I have extensive experience in English language education. I apologize if this isn't the proper place for this post. When I get to Italy, I do not want to lose momentum, and if I wait for my husband to get home to try to find a tutor, I will forget a lot. Vicenza is a small city and easy to reach. From the airport there'a a bus every 10 min that takes you to the train station. From here there's a train almost every hour, the intercity is a bit faster (takes about 50 min)and costs about € 10,00, the regional one costs about € 4 (takes about 1 hour). Theres also many bus that leaves from the airport, stop in Padova and from there an other one will take you to vicenza. There's also few hotels in the caserma area, not too expensive (about € 70-80 per night) Hope this helps. To everybody, be strong, the homecoming is everyday closer. start smiling!!!! http://www.veniceairport.it/page/servizi/trasporti/treno http://www.vicenza-hotels.com/vicenza/comearrivare.htm to c.o.t., love ya baby sooooooooo much

The only thing I have doubts about is the bus from Venice to padova and Vicenza because I used to live in Padova and there was not a bus to Vicenza from Venice. Is it a new one? I thougth that the train was faster and the INTERCITY wasn't that expensive. The EUROSTAR used to be really expensive but maybe it has changed. And do you know the HOTEL VICTORIA near the PALLADIO MALL? maybe that one is a nice choice too. Do you know how much it cost? I hope this can help someone. Thanks again

To iluvaarc@hotmail.com: No, I wasnt being sarcastic at all. I really do think that is great that you found such a low air fare, one way or not-somtimes one ways are even more expensive the round trips. For those wondering about hotels in Italy. I stayed at a hotel about 5 minutes off from post. The name has slipped my mind at this moment, but it was right across from the army post where things are shipped into. It was a nice hotel and the people who worked there were quite friendly.

It is really nice to know that your soldiers could come back sooner. I usually buy the tickets at usairways.com. They have special offers for military and their families. For the person who was wondering about how to get to Vicenza and the driver license. In Italy they have buses from the airport to the train station every 10 minutes. It is a orange bus and should cost 85 cents- 1 Euro. You can buy the tickets at the airport. Then you can take the train from Venezia to Vicenza (the cheaper is the Regional, but it is really slow so you may take the INTERCITY, it is not that expensive (5 euro or something like that. And you don't need a driver license because Vicenza is really small. Use the bus because it is no expensive and takes you everywhere. GOOD LUCK AND TAKE CARE. We miss so much Vicenza and the Camp Ederle base. We'll be in Alaska for the next 3 years,... Anyhow, If anyone needs rather information, your e-mails are welcome. I used to live in Italy. Have a nice day!!

Hi, Could someone please tell me the date that 2/503rd, B Co, 3rd platoon appeared on the front page of the New York Times? I ordered a copy and never received it. It's in my check book for June 22, so it was sometime before that. NYTimes does not have any of my info in their computer, now I have to go through archives (they aren't very helpful) and hopefully they will be able to get me a copy, but I need the date of the paper. I know some of you ordered that paper, so if you could please help me out, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

I really don't think most of us are worried about rumors, we're concerned about finding out when they'll actually be home so we can make the arrangements we need to, to fly to Italy. Some of us have a lot of planning to do, going along with the person talking about how a lot of us work & have to plan accordingly. Thanks to the person who commented on their past experience with them coming home from Iraq. It helps to have that info - thank you.

Quick question-Anyone heard from the 74th LRSD lately? Haven't heard from my husband in a week and three days (I know it could be worse). Any info. would be great. Also, I'm thinking alot of us (families) who are planning on going to Italy for the big homecoming, will have to be staying off post. The hotel on post is always booked, and this should be no different. I have stayed at Hotel Mary which is right across the street from post. It's not bad, believe me it's gotten a lot better. So there's something to think about!!

I know from experience that when the guys came home from the first deployment to Iraq it was a huge deal. The streets were all lined with people welcoming home the guys and they were even escorted on to base by a fire truck. From what I hear from my FRG the guys will be slowly redeploying in groups at a time....sometime in January. When they came back from Iraq there were different buses full of guys arriving at all different times and days. People from the FAC (family assistance center) are the ones who got the list of what guys....would be on what bus.....at what time. You had to call or stop by there to find your husbands name on the list. And if I remember correctly the lists changes everyday. I didn't even find out my husband was definitely coming until a few hours before. Hope this helps! Any questions just ask. And please remember that plans change....this is not set in stone. AND the returning home part could be totally different than before. Just wanted to share my experience with everyone else.

Don't count on it. Everything official I have read says the 10th Mountain Division takes over in March. Maybe he's talking about R and R. Personally I like rumors because I've learned never to believe them until they happen and they give me a good chuckle, but for the sake of those who they bother, they shouldn't be posted. My son frequently tells me all the rumors going around, which we laugh about and realize they are very unlikely to happen.

I have used a food sealer to send cookies to my son. I found that it is better to freeze the cookies before you seal them and they don't crush as much. Also, if your cookies have any kind of pointed edges on them, wrap them several times in plastic wrap as cushion before you seal them so the points don't poke through the sealer bags and cause you to lose your seal.

Dear Jaymo my daughter and I have used them and they do work but the trick is not to suck too much of the air out or your cookies turn into little hard hockey pucks, my son did not care he ate them anyway, I did though I had invested a small fortune on his teeth. The key is to take out all the extra air around the cookie but not out of the cookie too.

The 2 in 2-503 is the second battalion of the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR). Throughout the years the battalions and organizational schemes have gotten scattered about, but that is tha way I understand it. so the 503rd apparently still does, or at one point, had more than one battalion and the one in Vicenza is the historical 2nd of that Regiment. Then that battalion is comprised of companies and each company is comprised of platoons. hope this helped some...I have a precarious grasp on it myself.

Speaking of baking goodies for our soldiers -has anyone had success with sending anything else over that is homemade (e.g rice krispie treats etc) I was just wondering. I was able to talk on the phone with my husband this morning and then online for a while -what a nice treat!! He was able to send me pictures that he had just taken with his new digital camera I sent him for his upcoming birthday. Seeing pictures of him has made my weekend.

I was just reading the message board and thought the cookie conversation was funny because I just baked my boyfriend some cookies on Wednesday and am off to the post office with them now!! I was going to ask on here if there were any suggestions for sending them...and I guess I am not the only one sending goodies right now!! Hopefully mine get there before they go bad and in somewhat of one piece!!! I was going to put some bread in there, but didn't know if it would really matter. I will next time though! Good idea about baking them one minute less than usual too by the way! I'll try that one next time! Thanks!

Liz, I also use the old fashioned cookie tins. I have heard about using the bread to keep the moisture in, but I have not done that yet...Instead, I put plastic wrap on the bottom, layer the cookies, and when the tin is full I wrap the plastic wrap around the top of the cookies to make sure no air will get inside. Also, I usually cook the cookies for a minute less then usual because that keeps them more moist. Hope that helps!

Liz, We have found by trial and error that the old fashioned cookie tins and ice cream tubs work the best. My son said that is what seems to keep them the freshest. I just asked the girls I work with and Mom asked at church and we have been provided with a steady supply. Sometimes they just show up on my front porch...lol I stack the cookies and pack slices of bread in with them to keep them fresh. Something my Grandma taught us years ago. Make sure they are tight, keeps them from breaking. Then I seal the lids with mailing tape. Hope that helps! MJ

TODAY IN 173d HISTORY, 3 NOVEMBER 1967, In some of the heaviest fighting seen in the Central Highlands area, heavy casualties are sustained by both sides in bloody battles around Dak To, about 280 miles north of Saigon near the Cambodian border. The 1,000 U.S. troops there were reinforced with 3,500 additional troops from the U.S. 4th Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade. They faced four communist regiments of about 6,000 troops. The climax of the operation came in a savage battle from November 19-22 for Hill 875, 12 miles southwest of Dak To. The 173rd was victorious, forcing the North Vietnamese to abandon their last defensive line on the ridge of Hill 875, but the victory was a costly one because the paratroopers suffered the loss of 135 men, 30 of whom died as a result of an accidental U.S. air strike on U.S. positions. In the 19 days of action, North Vietnam fatalities were estimated at 1,455. Total U.S. casualties included 285 killed, 985 wounded, and 18 missing. During this battle, the North Vietnamese failed to achieve one of their main objectives, which was the destruction of an American unit. They came close, but the Americans, despite heavy losses, had achieved the true victory: they mauled three enemy regiments so badly that they were unavailable for the Tet Offensive that the Communists launched in late January 1968.

To all out there wishing to send trees to our soildiers, walmart.com has a set of 3 tress listed for $24.97. They are pre-lit Alpine Christmas trees: 2.5, 3, and 4 ft heights and weigh 8.04lbs. total. Walmart does ship over seas. My daughters and I will be sending a lot of goofy things for Christmas: silly slippers, rug for beside his cot, jersey sheet set, tree, etc... I will make him a heavy throw to keep him warm on those cold nights. Anything to give our hero a taste of home...... May God watch over every hero out there and their families is my prayer. Mom your hero tree is more than a gift---it is a calling. Thank you.

My soldier goes back on Thursday. I asked him about Christmas and he said the guys would enjoy a small tree for their tent. I found a four ft. pre-lit tree at Walmart for only $25.00 and several different shatterproof ornaments they just put out today. I also found some silly Christmas songs Cd's. Just wanted to share the source. I have been looking for some time for a tree but everything I could find was in a catalog and very expensive.

To everyone who has sent condolences or prayers to the Cruz family. PFC Joseph Cruz was my only brother. I have just read what you nice people have written about him. I'm sorry that I did not read these earlier. His funeral was Wed. 10/26/05 in El Paso, Tx. My family took this real hard and if any of you out there knew my brother I ask that you please take the time to say something about him. You can e-mail me any stories or comments. They would greatly be appreciated. To everyone out there: You are all so brave. I can't imagine what you go through but I thank each and every one of you. As a side note I want to say that it was hard for me to cope with my brother joining the Army; furthermore going overseas. I didn't know how to handle it and so I never wrote to him and if that is the case for any of you soldiers please know that you are loved by your family. I hope my brother knew how loved he was by me even though I couldn't show him. I hope to receive e-mails and messages about my brother. Again thank you to those who have prayed for him.

Hello Everybody !!! Well had the interview yesterday. They were so excited by The Hero Tree that the entire interview was done in front of it !! There are now well over 200 stars on it now so it is very impressive. When I explained to her that each of these stars both Blue and Gold represented America's finest, the brightest. That they were all Heroes every last one, she got very teary eyed and "You really love these men and women don't you?" I told her "Of course, these are my children now, all I left." She is going to let me know when the interview will run. I believe it will only show in the southeast area (each area will have their own local families), But she is going to send me a copy of it and my husband is going to copy it onto CD and I am going to send a copy to "my special children" and let them know to show it to the rest of the companies and I would like to try and send a copy or 2 to Italy for any of the families that would like to see it there (good way for you all to meet) So if any of you are interested let me know. I would like to send only one per unit. Email me. Love to all. Sky soldiers - stay safe, stay strong, remember someone loves you. Mommaski
