All Fury and Shark Family members should be contacted by their Paratrooper in reference to the mail cut-off. Second week in January is the time frame. After that, all mail will be re-directed to Italy. After that, no telling where the next unit's S-1 will send it. Happy New year, we finally have snow!!! Thanks to all the FRG members who supported the Paratroopers of the battalion during Christmas with the stockings. Additionally, Mrs. Jacobs and her supporters who put together the Shoe Boxes, a warm welcome from the men. All of the boxes arrived on time. Shark 7

I just want to confirm what the person a couple blocks down from me had posted. With family members visiting from the states. You are eligible for a family member extended pass. You will initially have be signed in at the gate with your sponsor/soldier and then proceed to the pass and badge office. Which your soldier should know where that is. There hours are 0800-1200 1300-1600. Closed Italian holidays. All you will need is your soldiers ID card and your US passport. It takes about ten minutes maximum. You will be printed a paper pass for up to 90 days. You will need to carry this pass at all times along with your passport. All you have to do is show these two documents at the gate and you that will be your access onto the installation. Family members with this pass may be allowed on without your soldier present. Like the person had said this does not give you privileges to shop at the px commisarry or shopette. Hope everyone has a great new year and a safe one as well and god bless our troops and the countdown is on!!!

Dear Mr. Bradley Thank you so much for the pictures for our son was where they are taken and he was there at Christmas. It was wonderful to know that he was not forgotten and special efforts were made to help his squad through this Christmas. It was also wonderful to see pictures of your son, It seems that the apple has not fallen far from the tree when it comes to bringing joy to others. God bless you and your family and thank you for all you have done to bring us the blessing of this website. I know that if I could not come here to look at pictures and meet all the new friends it would have been a very hard year. sincerely liz

Well tonight we bring our soldier back to the airport after two wonderful weeks at home. We did so much that the time just flew by. He had the chance to see many friends who were also home from college and Navy and Marine's it was so good to see them all together again. Our soldier has been out every night to the wee hours having a blast sleeping til well after noon time and starting all over again and we have been right there with him trying to keep up as best we old folks can. i'll tell you I need some rest between the cooking and partying I'm just about ready for rehab!!!! But I wouldn't want it any other way this has been the most fun he has had since we went to Italy to see him last Nov. I am so grateful for the time we have had together. A few more months and he will be out of that hell hole and I pray they won't have to be redeployed for a long time to come. Happy New Year to everyone I pray for all your sky soldiers safety and that they will all be home safe and sound soon. Michele D

Thank you all for the information. . . I have booked the hotel room and I look forward to seeing my soldier. Im going to stay in town, I figure it will be easier bc of all the worries of getting on base. I wish I could be there when they get back but the timing of when is so roundabout. For those of you who are coming here in Italy and don't know where to stay i can suggest some hotels easy to reach and not far from the Ederle base. these are the websites of each one, you can even find an English language version and get all the informations you need. go to www.arieshotel.it  or www.hotelpiramidi.com  (this is in front of a big mall called LE PIRAMIDI, you can find it easily) and www.hotelvictoriavicenza.com . These hotels are pretty close to the A4 Milan-Venice highway exit Vicenza Est, and 5 minutes far from Vicenza and from the Ederle base. Also, from Venice airport a bus leaves almost every hour to several destinations, take the one for Vicenza and ask to stop on the Vicenza bus station called FTV. from there you can take a taxi to go to the hotels or to the base, from vicenza bus station you can even take the town buses (the orange ones) and take the one to VIALE DELLA PACE, it leaves you right in front of the Ederle base. Hope this helps! I wish you all enjoy your italian holidays

Well it ain't over until ALL the Sky Soldiers arrive back in Vicenza, then starts the reintegration process. Bear in mind this can be 1-2 weeks. Also that your Sky Soldier will have changed. As much as he wants to be with his family and friends and party like its 1999 (an expression), he will subconsciously free the loss of community - (his brothers he lived with the last 12 months). As he changed and adopted, he must now adapt to his new world - that's why an re-integration process. Even with that, he still may be jumpy, very opinionated and short tempered. The home experience is familiar but new to him. He may feel out of place, but feel right at home, a confusing time. Patience and understanding is required. I recommend reading chuck dean's book, "Down Range" prior to your loved one coming home - Just some friendly advice.

For those of you visiting Italy upon the return of our soldiers, most of the time open access is granted to get on post (at least that has been the case when my friends and family have visited) if you go to the office by the MP desk to get an extended visitors pass. This keeps you from having to sign in each time you go onto post. You just show them your form (which will say unaccompanied access authorized - or something like that) and your passport and you should be fine. I think it only applies to US Citizens. You have no buying privileges except at eating establishments, but that should be sufficient. Hope you all have success with your trips to Italy.

It seems like a lot of you are going to be able to go to Vicenza when the guys come back from Afghanistan. We won't be able to go again...would everyone please cheer REALLY loud so it sounds like we're all there? Thanks. My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Due More in the middle of Vicenza for a few days, very clean and nice European style, but also at the base hotel, very clean and nice and American style (not to mention the desk clerks all speak English) It was very difficult moving through the security gates on the base though, almost impossible when our soldier wasn't with us, so I'd really recommend staying in town. Anyone that might want the phone numbers or websites of the hotels, I still have them if you want to e-mail me. Thanks again Mr. Bradley for helping all of us work our way through the last ten months! Happy New Year everyone!

I heard from my boyfriend 1/508 A CO yesterday in an email and then this morning he woke me up with a phone call. I had not heard from him in quite awhile but I remained calm and patient. I know he's busy and dealing with a lot over there. These guys have been thru so much this last 10 months and now they are on the home front stretch to come home. I thought I was dreaming when he called. I had to pinch myself. He sounded good, we laughed and joked a bit, but I could hear the home sickness in his voice. I unfortunately will not be able to be there when he gets off the bus. BUT, I know many of you will and that is good to know. They deserve so much for all they've given. I hope ya'll had a great holiday season and everyone just keeps there heads and hearts in the right place. These Men and Women deserve it!!! I love you David and I can't wait to see you.

That's it.. the hotel Mary. really small!! And yes, the hotel caserma ederle fills up super fast. I was only able to stay a couple nights. staying off base is nice though, because every time you want to go on, you have to get your passport out and a paper that the base approves for you to be on. staying off base, you're free to roam as you please and go to your hotel when you please. Good luck Amanda!

I have stayed at the Hotel Ederle before while visiting my husband, and at the same time, My husbands friend's fiancée stayed there as well -so guests can stay at that hotel over night. That hotel really books up fast though, so if you are going, you should try to reserve a room asap.

The Hotel Ederle is on base and I'm pretty sure that guests aren't allowed to be signed onto the post overnight. The Hotel Mary is right off post...I don't know much about it. If your soldier has transportation (or can rent/borrow a vehicle), I would recommend the Hotel Due Mori in the centre of Vicenza, that's where I have my family stay when they visit...its decently priced and comfortable...also nice to stay downtown where you can walk to restaurants, etc.

There is a hotel on base that you can stay at. Making reservations ahead of time is good. I know that one time I went, I was only able to get it for a couple days because they were booked! There is a hotel across the street, pretty small rooms, and also around town. I am going in March and staying off base. If you need anything more let me know!! He found a place for me. God Bless!!

I also depend on this site to keep somewhat of a bond with my son in Afghanistan. Everyday for the last 10 months first thing I do is log on. For a moment imagine the last 10 months without this site. It has given us some peace of mind and comfort. Thank you Mr. Bradley from us all over the United States for your heartfelt time and effort, your good deed definitely touches my heart here all the way out in California. Let's keep in site that it's about our loved ones, lets remember that family members of loved ones already lost still read this site. Let's honor those who have lost their lives. One thing we can all do to honor them is by staying above the bickering, and take a long breather and get back on track. Good luck and stay low to our men and women over there! Our son served with the 173rd for three years and made the jump into Iraq. We had both the honor and the pleasure of visiting Italy on several occasions and meeting many Sky Soldiers. The unit will always be a part of our family's life and will always be in our hearts. I spend probably more time than I should on the website that James Bradley has created and maintained. I think that we all owe a great debt to him. We always pray for the safe return of every member of the 173rd. Steven Becker and Family

This is ridiculous! We have are so close to having our loved ones back safe and yet people still find a way to cause havoc. So what if Mr. Bradley posts pictures up of his son. If I had a website, you had better believe I would post all pictures I had of my husband. I agree with the others who have said "if you want your soldier's picture posted -then you have to send it in to Mr. Bradley". Thank you Mr. Bradley for all you do. I am glad you go through those messages that post fear, because as a soldier's wife, I definitely don't need to be reading those messages like that. Out of the 1500 plus photos you may find about 15 of my son, that is 1%. I post them here so his sister (Also an Army Medic) stationed in Seattle can see what I get. Also his aunts, uncles around the country get to see him ....just like the other 99% of the people do when they send me photos.

Messages get deleted because of several reasons. 1. is spreading RUMOR, 2. is spreading FEAR,  3. is spreading HATRED. I understand women like to trouble share BUT when your sharing become spreading fear, that crosses the line. So no RUMORS, FEAR, HATRED or I'll delete it. As to photos, were did that come from? Photos used are in public domain or I was given the OK by the webmaster, etc or the photos were sent to me to be posted. I don't post everything I get, some are inappropriate! Lets focus on the troops and less on us and message board bickering.

There WAS a ceremony in Kandahar. That's not a rumor. Deleting messages of those seeking support is very wrong. Support is what this website is for. However, if you don't like the photos you see (I agree with a previous posting) then email the photos you wish to see to Mr Bradley - that's how he gets them! I have never sent photos cause my soldier would be very mad about it & it goes along with why you don't bother talking to the press. Some people consider things like that very personal, as we do. His pictures are for us, not the whole world.

Mr. Bradley set up this site, if there was any money involved in setting it up he paid it, he gives his time monitoring and up keeping this site, it is NOT a public site, it is a site provided by Mr. Bradley, NO ONE but Mr. Bradley has the right to decide what is published on this site and for my money he has done an outstanding job and provided a service that you would NOT have otherwise unless those that are complaining published a site of their own. Mr. Bradley. I for one thank you for providing this service for us and if you think I have said to much then you have the right to delete this message and I will stand by your decision and will continue to visit this site if you permit me.

I agree that Mr. Bradley has the authority and right to delete messages that he deems as inappropriate, but, to delete messages of concerns from families is not appropriate. I felt that Ms. Mitchell's comments were one in which she was deeply concerned about the welfare of her husband and hoped by putting it on this website, someone just might ease her mind or at least give her some support. Your deletion of her message has prevented that from happening. Ms. Mitchell, if you are still looking at this site, please don't let this one incident prevent you from returning. Maybe someone will address your concerns before Mr. Bradley can delete them. Please remember, there are other families that feel the same way you do.

I live by Fort Stewart, Georgia. The soldiers of the 3rd Inf Div have started coming home from Iraq by the hundreds. It's wonderful to see the excitement around town for the soldiers and their families. The town is decked out with signs, billboards, and of course lots of yellow ribbons. Also, if you aren't familiar with ITR, they offer 2-3 tours a week, mostly in Italy, but with some trips to Switzerland and Austria. Around certain holidays they usually offer a 2-4 day trip to other places like Paris, Amsterdam, Poland, etc. All the tours include transportation and some have guided tours. If you aren't interested in the trips they have scheduled, they usually have good information you can get on specific destinations that interest you and what there is to do there.

Hello to all. We had a wonderful Christmas Holiday. My son, Sean A Co. 2/503rd got to Philadelphia at 1:41pm Friday the 23rd. We stopped to get him his cheese steak. After 5 days of travel he played with his 2 year old daughter and fell asleep for 13 hours. He was exhausted. On the flight from Atlanta to Phila he sat in first class. We went right up to the gate where he got off the plane, we hugged him, and he saw his daughter. Not much talking but alot of tears. On Christmas day our local TV station came to our house to interview him. Very tastefully done. Here is the article I would like to share with all of you. ( http://www.wfmz.com/cgi-bin/tt.cgi?action=viewstory&storyid=11575# )just copy and paste. GOD BLESS OUR SKY SOLDIERS. John McDonald

i happened to look at the casualty list today and saw the names of brave men and women who were killed on this Christmas day. Although they are not part of the 173rd, many can relate to the feeling of loosing a soldier, not to mention on Christmas. May we continue to keep those Gold Star families in our prayers who are part of the 173rd and those who serve in different areas... they are still heroes and defend America. God bless our sky soldiers, you all and your families. May the next year bring more peace!!!

All: Just received the 2006 edition of the 173d Calendar. Jim Bradley put together a calendar exclusive and expressly for Afghanistan Combat Troopers. And this edition of the 173d Calendar is a collector's issue. Pictures show the daily life of what the men are experiencing, minus combat footage of course. But if someone happened to have a camera, and the subject matter was not offensive I'm sure Bradley would give it due consideration for the 2007 173d Calendar. Speaking of which, when you men send Bradley pictures, please indicate who is one each photo. Said photo or photos with names of those pictured will serve to capture each person for historical purposes. Don't miss out on your future, for some $13.00 you'll have yourself a keepsake.

It's official! Late last night, the U.S. Senate passed Resolution 343 designating December 19-25 as a time to say thanks to our troops serving around the world. Now it's up to us to spread the message quickly. WE NEED YOUR HELP During Thank a Soldier Week (December 19-25), Townhall.com is encouraging Americans to stop for a moment and give thanks to the men and women risking everything for us. Word for Thank A Soldier Week is only going to spread as far as we send it and we are counting on you to help us multiply our efforts tenfold! If everyone just tells one other person, we will double the number of people who will be thanking soldiers and that's going to have a major effect on the morale of our troops and our leaders. Tell Your Friends Today! http://www.thankasoldierweek.com/tell_a_friend.html I just wanted to pass this on to all of you. And to all those 173rd soldiers reading this A BIG THANK YOU FROM A 173RD MOM. You are so speical. Thanks so much for being where you are and fighting for our Freedom. I was told by the airlines that they would not allow me to board from the US on over w/o permission from the consulate. I contacted the consulate and that is what they told me. Because I wasn't going over w/ command sponsorship, they told me they could not allow me to travel into Italy on a one way. What I find interesting, though, is that I could have flown into Amsterdam, taken a European flight from Amsterdam down to Italy and been fine. So, there are ways around it. It REALLY didn't make sense to me, but because of what I was told I ended up purchasing the round trip and not using the return leg right away. I'm simply sharing what the Italian Consulate in Chicago told me, if you're concerned, go ahead and contact your regions consulate, keep us all up to date, too. Any information to save someone a headache is well worth it.

If this is any help, I am a spouse and I have never had a problem with flying with just my passport and Visa. Technically you are allowed in a foreign country for 90 days, that's what I have always been told. Granted, things change. But right now I am currently in the states for the holidays and I am heading back to Italy in Jan. and this is the 3rd time i have been back and forth this year and never had a problem. I could understand if you were flying Space-A travel that you would need your husbands orders, but if you are flying commercial you shouldn't need his orders, I have never been asked for my husbands orders. And the only other time you would need your husbands orders is if for some reason the military is paying for your flight or your on TDY. Like I said, this is coming from what I have experienced. I fly with NWA and have not had a problem nor with DELTA either. I hope this helps. If I can help anyone else, I will gladly.

From what I understand, you do need your orders otherwise there is a chance that the airlines will not let you on board if you do not hold a valid return ticket and if they do, customs in Europe may turn you back. I had heard a rumor about all of this, actually from this board, and ended up contacting the consulate directly. The Italian Consulate in Chicago told me that Italy does not allow anyone to fly in on a one way ticket unless arranged by the US Government--military. I held a visa and I still had to have a round trip ticket.

Well my son has been home for just about a week and it has gone by fast!! He has been so good talking to people etc... Sometimes well meaning family and friends can ask the most stupid questions. But he is just being great with it all. I ordered the Army xmas stocking and 173rd ornament he really got a kick out of those. I'm doing my best to fatten him up but he is very good about staying away from too much junk food. He is out every night with friends from school and others home on leave from Marines and Navy its great that they can all be together for Christmas who knows when they will see one another again. Well have a wonderful Christmas everyone. I'm enjoying this last week with my son. Bye, Michele

Just an issue of caution for those wives/fiance's/family out there thinking about a 1-way ticket. I was flying to Italy on a one way because it was inexpensive and even with a visa I was not allowed to enter. However, if you have the proper documentation through the military, that is different. The consulate requires a return date on your ticket even if you're carrying a visa. Silly, but I don't want anyone to have to deal with this!

my son is in the states!!!!! ssgt clint mack has arrived in nc safely. he flew into Atlanta, ga and got to see his cousin tabitha at the airport for a short 10 minutes but i was so thankful when he hit us soil someone was there to meet him. he then arrived in nc where summer his wife and 2 year old daughter emma claire were waiting for him. clint called me in ca and said he no longer has a baby emma is a little girl, she recognized him right away and said my daddy is home. what a moment to remember. we will be meeting up with clint and the family on dec. 27th in disneyworld in fl. i cannot wait to see my son, he sounded good and was so glad to finally be on r&r. of course it was hard to leave the troops behind with the holidays and all but i did send all the presents to his men before clint departed so they had an early Christmas. seven days and my soldier will be in my arms. merry Christmas and happy new year to all of the 173rd soldiers and their families. proud mom of ssgt clint mack 2/503 chosen company and sgt chris mack presidential honor guard wash. dc

What I did was went through the phone book and wrote down all of the international airlines a called and asked all of them if they offered oneway military fares. Well turns out they do.

To the people concerning the soldier leaving on the 15th. It took my husband almost 5 days to get home. It depends on where they are leaving from and how many people are ahead of them on the flights out. They may get stuck in an airport in Afghanistan, or in Kuwaitt. My husband stopped 4 times from when he left Afghanistan, and wasn't able to call. I just had to keep checking with the USO at the airport for updated flight info, which was changed 4 times. I am sure she is fine, be patient, I know it is hard. Just think how it will be when you finally get to see her. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Because you are right, I too was helped and have been there before. YOu are 100% right in all that you said, and I am glad that you a Soldier has spoken up as well. The biggest thing is talk to your Boyfriend/ Fiances ladies and hopefully they can get you in touch with a nice person or wife whom will help you too. Take Care All, and God Bless you All! :)

This is to "The Fiances" in response to the comments made by "A Wife". She makes some very good and valid points. "A Wife"'s now husband informed her FRG that she existed. She was put in contact with other wives and her husband requested the FRG assist her in any way they could. Now, granted, not all FRG's will do this. There are regulations to define the boundaries in which information may be given out. I suggest you ask your fiance/boyfriend if there may be wives in the unit that would be willing to help. I know "A wife" met with other girlfriend's or fiances while she was here and helped them mail packages or send letters. She, too, was helped in that same way. I know many wives that have gone through the same thing. Most of them DO get help. Most of them ARE given information. As a soldier, it is their responsibility to give the unit's FRG information about wives, girlfriend's or family that would like to be kept in the loop. As a fiance, you can not be on a roster, but someone may be able to share whatever information they CAN (OPSEC aside). I know soldiers in my unit that never gave their FRG their WIVES information. The FRG is only aware of people's existance in a soldier's life when the soldier gives the unit that information. Ask your man who you can talk to. I bet you he might be able to give you a buddy's wife's phone number or email. I've done it. It works if you give it a chance. Good Luck! AIRBORNE!

To the families who have lost their dearly loved soldier:… I don’t have the words to express my gratitude for the sacrifice your soldier made, nor do I know how to make the heartache disappear. On behalf of my family and myself, we want you to know that we are continually thinking of you and praying for your peace during this holiday season. Your soldier is a hero to all of us and will never be forgotten. I hope that I never know the loss you suffer, nor that anyone else will endure what you have. I believe that even in time of sorrow, that they are never more then a memory away, they look down upon us always and that someday we will be with them again forever. I have to say that I am grateful for the family we have become over this deployment. I know that the support on this message board has kept me going with a positive outlook. If you need anything feel free to contact me, I don’t know the loss, but I am always willing to listen with open ears and heart. We love you, God bless you and happy holidays. Gina

Come here, Sarah, find comfort, we all love you and want to help if you need us. I tell my two children everyday their dad died a hero and your children need and will know that. Through your tragedy, just know, you are not alone and I, along with many others, pray for your peace, your courage, and your strength during this trying time. To the family of Spc. Morton, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I know first hand the shock and pain you are feeling in this horrible time. I know that it has been said over and over but I am truely here for you now or later..whenever. for the other families that I have not sent my condolences too i am deeply sorry for that. With each new loss my hear is ripped open again. But I think of you all everyday and wish that we had our own support group. No one except the people who have walked this path understand. And this group here is one that understands the 173rd's bond. It is one unlike any other..ok maybe i'm just biased..but I've seen it, from the soldiers themselves to the families on this board. Not every unit has this available to them for the love and support they need. Ok, now I'm rambling so my point was that I am thankful for the skysoldiers and their families. Also, in this weeks People magazine(Best and worst 2005) there is a list in the back of all of our fallen soldiers from iraq and afghanistan. I hope you all get to see it. Love you all Merry Christmas.

Thank you. I've been worried about it ever since he told me what he did. I never want to be afforded the same respect that his parents deserve. My prayers to the family who lost a loved one. And my prayers to all who are worried (like I am) during this awful time of waiting. May we have patience with one another and nothing but love and support for the soldiers. God bless and protect them.

Give me a break. There is a soldier that just lost his life...have you thought about his family, his wife, his children who will not be able to grow up with there father? or have you just been thinking of yourself? I am sorry but I agree even if we are american girlfriends you have the same rights as we do. Just because your italian german chinese whatever does not mean anyone is conspiring against you. I am really getting sick of hearing the same old crap when there are more important things to be concentrating on. I dont doubt that you love your soldier but come on...What the heck is wrong with you?? Any of you. Building drama>? And just to let you know the wives who are in the states dont hear much either its not just you!!! It really hurts me to see this because my husband had to carry a coffin onto a plane and you people are sitting here worried about why your not married whether you have children or otherwise...this is absolutely ridiculous cant we all just stick together? Get the heck over it!!THINGS CoULD BE A LOT WORSE trust me.

To be part of the Army"Family" you must get married?! That's sound wrong to me but this is only what I think but I also understands they can't give informations to everybody, easyly. I think we should help and support eachother and not argue and tell who's right to know or not. Right now I just wanted to give my condolence to the family of the fallen soldier. to all the fiancées, wifes...in my eyes the real problem is not if the FRG is giving information to the girlfriends ,but the press posting events right away and making everyone paranoid. My boyfriend was astonished when he called me right after all this happened and he just heard about it and didn't even know what happened himself. I think it would be better for everyone if the press would have to wait with their news a day or two. I think also that it is a good advice to stay in close touch with the family of your soldier-i am together 7 years with my boyfriend and his parents and me always inform each other.. Also, i wanted to give my condolences to the family of the soldier who died and hope god gives them a way to ease their pain about their loss! it is especially hard to loose someone at this time of the year and i feel with them!

I think my story & situation will help Girlfriends/fiances a little. It doesn't matter if your Italian, American, German or whatever, when I met what is my now husband, I was in the states and he flew me over to Italy to be with him and we were going to get married in Italy, It didn't matter if I was an American or not, I was NOT able to get any information, I was NOT able to walk on to the post unless I was signed on, I had no rights or privileges! But I made the best of it. At the time, I couldn't even go into the PX, I had to sit in the food court while my fiance went into the PX, because I didn't have an ID Card, just a passport. 3 weeks after I got to Italy my now husband had to go to Germany for 6 weeks, I couldn't attend any FRG meetings, I couldn't even get onto post, I had to learn how to do everything on my own. And getting married in Italy was alot of paperwork and it's a long process, and me and my husband had NEVER been married before either. It's just something that as a girlfriend/Fiancee that you have to understand, I didn't take offense to it, when I couldn't get onto post or when I wasn't being told anything other than by my Fiance/ now husband. It's just the way it is. THere are reasons why things are the way they are. Like another said, it's OPSEC reasons, and it's the fact that we are the wives, we get the information before there families even do, when you become a wife, you become part of the army as well, things you do, what you say, reflects on your husbands post, his unit and him. Maybe this doesn't sound right, but I was once told this, "As a wife, you are trusted, you are trusted to stand by your husband and support him, and you are trusted with the information you receive and you are trusted to put the very best interest of your husband, his unit and brigade at interest". I know some may disagree so that is why I am speaking for myself and no one else. We get information and are briefed on things too. There are reasons why they just tell solely the wives, and I know another person just said that as well, and that person is very right. Security is a huge issue, I am not here to discriminate, I too have been where you girlfriends and Fiances are, but you just have to understand and when you become a wife, you too will understand. The best advice I can give you is keep the lines of communication open with your boyfriend/fiance, and like Mommaski said, get to know his family, that will help ALOT! Believe me Girlfriends/Fiances, I do Understand, I have been where your at, just stay strong and keep your faith! Your day too will come! :) Keep supporting your soldier the way you do, it's what they need and matters so much! Hang In Their!

I just have one question? Why did you and your soldier not get married if you feel you sould have the info? I would think that if you wanted to be informed maybe you should be a spouse. The rest of us did not get info before we were married and i would think if you have a child that he could have married you before he left???? Have you asked yourself that question? If the army gives info to everyone who say that they are a girlfriend, f'ance or friend than anyone would be able to have the info and that could put lots of soldiers lives at risk. I would think about that most of all and just pray for the family that has lost a fine AMERICAN. That is what the rest of us are doing.

Mommaski, You really give some logical advice here! I was sitting here wondering how to reply to these Italian girls or fiances/girlfriends that would actually give them some results. I think it is nice that the wives have gotten on here to express that no one is trying to leave you ladies out of the loop. I am happy that your soldiers have your support, that only makes for happier soldiers : ). I do understand why the information is given solely to wives. The wives are constantly reminded about OPSEC issues, what is okay to say, what is not okay to say. Fiances/girlfriends do not get this "training" so to speak. So if you hear information from your future husbands and accidentally (without realizing it is wrong) give out information...you put the whole brigade at risk. It really makes sense that only wives recieve information. Mommaski was totally right. One sure way to get info would be to keep in contact with your future in-laws and his family. If your soldier truly wants you to know the information...they will tell you as soon as they can. Sometimes, they just don't want you girls to worry...I know it is nearly impossible. Hang in there, and it try to see the light at the end of the tunnel...it's almost over.

Haven't heard from my 74th soldier in a while. Has anybody else? As far as the wife/fiancee/girlfriend subject, I can't begin to list all the responsibilities of a wife versus that of a fiancee/girlfriend from financial to family to everything else. That doesn't mean you aren't as important. It means you don't have that legal connection you require for information direct from the Army. I never got it & never expected it until I got married. Unfortunately, if your loved one is in the same unit as mine - you aren't missing out on any FRG info, there's no communication. Hang in there!

The FRG must have the permission of the soldier to contact anyone other than a relative. I also believe it is the discretion of the FRG leaders and commanders whether or not fiances/girlfriends/ect can be included. Prior to my soldier leaving I tried to get to know other soldier's girlfriends and wives so that I could stay connected that way. The FRG is not specifically trying to exclude you, but they cannot just give out information to anyone who wants it. I hope this helps some, I am only speaking from my own experience so I apologize if I got anything wrong.

To Fiancees and girlfriends : Unfortunately the military does not recognise you as next of kin and therefore you have no rights to notification. It is not just you young ladies in Italy, nor confined to the Army. Unless you are married to the soldier, the parents will be notified as LEGAL next of kin. My advice to all Fiancees - get to know your future mother-in-law (you should do this anyway) Then if something (God Forbid) happens she will be able to notify you right away before you learn it from the media or a stranger. The other option is to make friends with the wives in your fiance's unit - sometimes they know what is going on long before the general public (even though they are not supposed to)Notification is a Legal right not a courtesy, therefore only next of kin are notified. My heart goes out to all of you, i'm sure it is nerve racking to not know what is going on and being glued to this site to see if you have lost. But to say your fear and pain is more than a wife's or a mother's is unfair, nor is it the same. That is not to make less of your love - you have finally found your soul mate. A wife has done that and has built a life with that soul mate. And a mother's love compares to neither of these. She gave birth, raised and worried all his life. A wife may remarry, a fiancee probably will marry, but a mother can not replace that child. All my love and prayers are with you and I hope you find a way to help all of you who love but are kept in the dark. Love Mommaski

Nothing can ease my mind when news spreads of a fallen soldier, especially before we know exactly who it is. When I hear of such devastating information that another one of our heroes has been killed, my first thought is, "I hope to God he isn't my husband". Then I almost feel ashamed for thinking that, for if he is not my soldier, then he is someone elses. Someone elses husband, son, brother, sister, wife, daughter... Someone who has a story, who had friends and a family...I feel by praying it is not my husband I am wishing pain on another family. So the only thing I can do is pray for all of our armed forces each and every day. I say a prayer for them all and wish them a safe return home.

This is my first time posting on this sight, so please forgive any idiocies I may have. Although I am a Canadian, I am in full support of the United States and what they stand for overseas. I wish them all hope and all the luck they could handle in their endeavors, and I wish for all a safe trip home. My condolences and my heart goes out to all that have lost a loved one. I would like to ask a question in the hope that someone might be able to answer. My boyfriend, a Canadian civilian, is currently overseas in Orgun-E, Afghanistan working on power generators. He recently phoned me, a joy to my ears, and talked to me about returning there next winter. His contract for the company that he is working with is done in late June then he is homeward bound. He would like for me to back with him come the winter, and I am unsure of one thing. My question to anyone is this: if we were to return, could we be in the same compound? I was told that we must be married in order to do this. If anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Once again my heart goes out to everyone, and may the United States stand brave and tall henceforth.

To all of our Fallen Soliders families: I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below, With tiny light, like Heaven's stars, reflecting in the snow. The sign is so spectacular, please wipe away the tear, For I am spending Christmas, with Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, But the sounds of music can't compare to the Christmas choir up here. I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring, For it is beyond description, to hear these Angels sing. I know how much you'll miss me, I see the pain inside your heart, But I am not so far away, we really aren't apart. So be happy for me, dear ones, You know I hold you dear, And be glad I'm spending Christmas, with Jesus Christ this year. I sent you each a special gift, from my heavenly home above. I sent you each a memory gift of my undying love. After all, love is a gift, more precious than pure gold, It was always most important in the stories Jesus told. Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to to, For I can't count the blessings, or love, He has for each of you. So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear, Remember, I'm spending Christmas, with Jesus Christ this year.

I received this from a friend and thought I would share it. It is long, but, very good. The Sands of Christmas I had no Christmas spirit when I breathed a weary sigh, And looked across the table where the bills were piled too high. The laundry wasn't finished and the car I had to fix, My stocks were down another point, the Dolphins lost by six. And so with only minutes till my son got home from school I gave up on the drudgery and grabbed a wooden stool. The burdens that I carried were about all I could take, And so I flipped the TV on to catch a little break. I came upon a desert scene in shades of tan and rust, No snowflakes hung upon the wind, just clouds of swirling dust. And where the reindeer should have stood before a laden sleigh, Eight Hummers ran a column right behind an M1A. A group of boys walked past the tank, not one was past his teens. Their eyes were hard as polished flint, their faces drawn and lean. They walked the street in armor with their rifles shouldered tight, Their dearest wish for Christmas, just to have a silent night. Other soldiers gathered, hunkered down against the wind, To share a scrap of mail and dreams of going home again. There wasn't much at all to put their lonely hearts at ease, They had no Christmas turkey, just a pack of MREs. They didn't have a garland or a stocking I could see, They didn't need an ornament-- they lacked a Christmas Tree. They didn't have a present even though it was tradition, The only boxes I could see were labeled "ammunition." I felt a little tug and found my son now by my side, He asked me what it was I feared, and why it was I cried. I swept him up into my arms and held him oh so near, and kissed him on the forehead as I whispered in his ear. There's nothing wrong my little son, for safe we sleep tonight, Our heroes stand on foreign land to give us all the right, To worry on the things in life that mean nothing at all, Instead of wondering if we will be the next to fall. He looked at me as children do and said its always right, to thank the ones who help us and perhaps that we should write. And so we pushed aside the bills and sat to draft a note, to thank the many far from home, and this is what we wrote: God Bless You all and keep you safe, and speed your way back home. Remember that we love you so, and that you're not alone. The gift you give you share with all, a present every day, You give the gift of liberty, and that we can't repay.

Thanks for the phone call yesterday morning. Was great to talk to you and to clear the air on some of the welcome home happenings. the Iraq welcome home was alot more unorganized but it was also because alot of the frg ladies had never dealt with a deployment and just didn't understand everything, i know i didn't. We tried to make every soldier, not just married ones, feel special, important, and cared for. Barracks rooms were decorated(i know personally because i was up there at the crack of dawn doing it with a SGT. and another wife), but they would have been done sooner except the rooms had not been designated yet to companies and so forth. This redeployment, i think, will go alot smoother. I wish i could be there to welcome John's boys home but i just don't feel it will help me in my healing process. Plus, if I go, I can't tell my children they have to stay here, and I know the welcome home won't be good for their healing process. We signed a banner and left a bottle of Jim Beam(John's drink) with a friend so his squad can drink one on him the night they get home. Just want all our deployed men and women to know that the Doles family thinks of you all, all the time, and pray for your safe return. I know the frg's are going to make this the best welcome home they possibly can and to them, i say thank you, and to all the single soldiers out there, you are just as loved as the man or woman with a family. You all are our extended family and we know you deserve as much love and respect as anyonelse wearing the military uniform. So, here's a big hug to you all!!! God Bless and God Speed to all!!!!

To all the families greeting soldiers...My son surprised me in coming home/Nov so can't help in arrivals, but we saw him off at the airport going back. They only asked for our ID's.. We got passes, went thru security and were at the gate until he walked on board. The "ticket people" saw that John was military (duh) and upgraded him to 1st class all the way, complimentary...Yes I cried, most people waiting did too. The respect for our soldiers is amazing. Again Portland OR is not a military town. We get amazing support WHEN people realize we are a military family, otherwise I believe it is still "out of sight out of mind." As for our family, the military will be our first choice for support. I will now always send boxes for the holidays etc. It is the best effort ever! We have only been a "family" for 3 yrs, I realize for alot of you that might be nothing, for me it has been eternity. Bless the soldiers always, no matter what their enlistment is, duty is duty, and bless them for that. Happy Holidays to all a military family from Washington....diane

To ....: My intent was not to make ANYONE feel like a heal because they are unable to fly to Italy at the drop of a hat. Yes I know when your loved one gets back to the US they will have a big celebration with family and friends. I'm sorry you have mistaken my concern for a single soldier as DRAMA. Please beleive me when I say, that was not my intent. My intent was to see that NO ONE was left out. I cannot go to Italy either - not because I cannot afford it, but, because there is no one there for me. I never had the chance to have the option of going or staying. I just wanted to know that everyone would be taken care of - and I have been assured by several great ladies that everyone will receive food, drink and hugs !!!! And that is all I cared about. If you truely thought I was trying to make you feel bad or that it was just drama maybe you should have emailed me personally - I ALWAYS include my email address. Or you should have included your name or address and I could have privately emailed you to tell you of my intent. My love, thoughts and prayers have always been and always will be to "my" Sky Soldiers and their families. Please FRG, if you are out there and there is anything I can do - let me know!!!! Love Mommaski

dear Mommaski i just finished to read your e mail and i agree with you with everything you wrote. First of all i would like you to know that im part of the frg and for our HEROS' return we are organizing something so that all the single soldiers can have somebody there for them. We dont want nobody to feel lonely like it happened when the guys got back from Iraq. First of all we will make sure that our sky soldiers have somebody waiting for them. we will prepare nice home made food and we will made their bedroom clean and ready (they will sleep again in a room!!!!!!!)We will try to do our best according to the time they will arrive. you know if they got in at 3 o clock a.m. its very very difficult for lots of people to be there(expecially who have children and nobody that can look after them). sometimes we have the exacte number of soldiers returning the same day.....because of these reasons this time we will not be unprepared. We can also made this plan come true with the help of everybody......i know that it may sound crazy but not everybody cares......i can tell you that from my husband compamy ONLY six persons said they will help.......dont you think this is sad?????? I HOPE more people will decide to help...this would be a nice way TO SAY THANKS to all our heros who have been risking their lives for the all year. Thanks for taking time and read this.......

I am glad to hear that the FRG is planning something for the single soldiers. My son is single and he and I discussed it and there is no way I would be able to be there when they come back to Italy. We decided that we could just have a big welcome for him when he gets his block leave to come home. As for your soldiers coming home for leave, just go to the ticket counter of the airline they are coming in on, tell them your soldier is coming home on leave, show them your driver's license and they will give you a pass that will allow you to go through security and then to the gate. You will have to go through the same security procedures as regular passengers. It is a hassle but well worth it to be there when your soldier gets off of the plane. Also, on another note, my nephew is with the 101st Airborne in Iraq. They have had quite a few casualties in the short time they have been there for this deployment. (About 3 months). If you don't mind, please add them to your prayers. Thanks!

You're supposed to show a DOD ID card, but I have a friend that got back to the gate at the airport without one. Just ask a ticket agent because they give you a pass to get through TSA to the gate (still have to go through metal detectors). They may let you and they may not. Most of us went up to the gate to say "goodbye" not "welcome home", so it may be different for them coming in.

Our FRG has plans in the works for our company's single soldiers. As for the others, I know that last time, we came to everyone's homecoming, not just our own soldier's. That way, there would be people there to welcome them when they first stepped off. Not sure if there is anything bigger than company-level organized for that...but that's what I know.

Hello everyone !!! I just got thru reading an article about how some homecomings are lonely. It was a very sad article !!! It talked about how the married soldier had his family there to greet him when they got off the plane on their return home, but that there were many more single guys who get off the plane and get to the hanger to - nobody !!! No hugs, no well done, nothing - it about broke my heart !!! It said many parents were unable to afford the flights sometimes and there was also the unknown arrival problem. Sometimes families are told at the last minute that they are on their way home. I am just devestated !!!! How many of "my children" are coming home to nobody? Then further down the article they talked about a group of volunteers (mostly vets from the 101st - the story was about the 101st) that go to welcome home the returning single soldiers !!!! They bring their wives, children and grandchildren and they are called "Official Volunteer Huggers" (that's what the name tag says!!!) Ladies is there any plan for greeting "our" single Sky Soldiers? Please don't let them come home to no hugs !!!!! Let me know if I can help. Love to all of you. Mommaski

You're right. Unless you're active duty with orders in hand, you'll need a travel passport (http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html The cost is $97. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, that's a whole different story. You would need to apply for the no-fee passport/visa at your local military base/post. But please allow yourself enough time for the passport to arrive before you plan to travel. I applied for my no-fee passport/visa and didn't get it until over 4 months later due to problems (on their end). Hope this helps. If I'm wrong, somebody please correct me.

Just a questions regarding OPSEC- if it's not good to list soldier and company and all, then why do the pictures, which give away their actual look, have names and company information. I'm not complaining at all, I'm just curious. I would think having a face with a picture isn't good either. And yes the enemy sure could have internet and can access the photos. Just a thought! God bless you guys. Stay warm.. I know that's a nice thought rather than reality!! Thanks for the sacrifices you're making.

Speaking of "OPSEC" -- Operational Security -- here are some things that we probably should *NOT* be speaking so freely about on this message board . . . (1) troop movement; (2) troop strength; (3) troop location; (4) troop concentration; (5) troop morale; (6) troop discipline; (7) unit identifiers; (8) personnel identifiers; (9) names and ranks of the Soldiers within the units; and (10) the various non-tactical communication capabilities of the individual units . . . This includes and applies to the Task Force, the brigade, the battalions, the companies, the platoons, the squads, etc. You have to remember that the enemy is probably somewhat sophisticated in *their* own intelligence gathering capabilities . . . They have the Internet, too.

Hi everybody, I just read about someone's boyfriend telling his girlfriend that he was going out on a mission and she put this information on the site. I'm very upset and frustrated that people are writing this kind of of info, about when our guys are going out on missions. I don't think this is appropriate and I don't think it is in their best interest to say when and who is going out on mission. Especially the part of what company is going. Do you not understand that this website is open to anyone who pleases to look at it and if the enemy or someone who does not want them to be in that particular country that maybe associated with the enemy to cover there butt could leak this and all hell could break loose. This is the safety of your soldier. Please girls keep your specific info for yourself because nobody needs to hear this info from anyone but their loved one, this is OPSEC. I hope after this message nobody else will share this important and serious information. THANK YOU

To Mommaski & Sky Momma - Thanks for your words of encouragement. My husband called again this morning & his mood was a little lighter, but it still took that turn to frustration. I reminded him again that there are other units still going out, but it didn't help, as he said he didn't think they were still at the caliber of his unit (being on the offensive). He thinks their leaders are ready to get them home safely & keeps them in decent places, but says his leader is seeking the firefights. All I can do is listen & pray for him. I wasn't there when he went through basic, don't have that experience. It's hard to try to convince someone that the person in charge of him doesn't have a death wish for him, when I'm not there to know what he really goes through. I'll keep being that listening ear, that's all I can do. Thanks for your help. PS - To anyone who has a loved one still going on missions, I am not trying to offend anyone, just telling MY experience with what my soldier deals with & thinks about.

Dear Frustrated, it's really, really hard sometimes, isn't it? I was getting those calls and emails for awhile too... but now the roller coaster has started the upward climb again, and things have been wonderful for awhile. If you saved any of your son's notes from basic, it happened there too...and at any other assignment he's been on.... it just seems so up, then so down, and not much in between. I think they have so many emotions to deal with over there, and now it's Christmas time making it even harder, and I think sometimes the emotions just get the best of them. Your son will pull thru, and someday, he won't even remember the crummy memories, only the proud. Like Mommaski said, you are so fortunate that he can confide in you. God love and keep him safe!

To Frustrated - Unfortunately this is one of the times the only thing you can do is listen. It is better that he vents to you, then someone else. He must really love and trust you. As you can see on this site alot of units are still going out and yes sometimes fighting. I am sure it feels like they are the only ones because they get back from one mission and then... Here We Go Again !!! He has a job to do and he must do it .. then he can gripe to you, have patience. Then you can tell us about it and get it off your chest. As for the division of the "newbies" I'm afraid that is going to happen, not just with the 173rd and not even just in the Army. The ones who went to Iraq together, suffered together, lost together and came back together have a bond that will be different. They are the "experienced". But you know what - when your husband gets back and another group comes to the 173rd they will be the "Newbies" the outsiders. Even if they served their time in Iraq and Afghanistan it won't matter - they didn't serve it with the 173rd. Maybe the Veterans out there can give us all some insight into how this works. I'm sure your husband is not the only one feeling this. Hey you "old timers" out there we need your help!!!! My love and prayers are with you and your husband. It won't be long now and they will be starting to come home. So - take care, stay safe and stay strong. Love Mommaski

I am frustrated because my soldier is frustrated. I keep getting bad call after bad call, as far as his general attitude, it's way down. His group feels that they are the only ones still going out for days, running missions & getting shot at. They feel that they are only out there for their "leader" to get his pats on the back, at their expense. I thought there were other groups going out still & tried to remind him of that. He also brings up the issue that the guys that were not in the 173rd at the time of the Iraq deployment are forming their own little groups, as if the "newbies" weren't there, so they can never be good enough like the other guys. He says there's an obvious divide. I want them home as much as the next guy, but it's hard to sit back & listen to his complaints about the leadership, knowing they are putting his life in their hands. Any suggestions on how to deal with this or what to say to him in response to his complaints? I'll not mention his unit at this time to protect them. Advice appreciated.

There's definitely money in advertising . . . . . . "WASHINGTON - The Army announced Wednesday that it is switching advertising agencies, dropping Leo Burnett Worldwide, which created the "ARMY OF ONE" slogan nearly five years ago, in favor of McCann Erickson of New York. The new contract is valued at an estimated $1.35 billion over a maximum of five years, with the first two years guaranteed and the Army holding an option to renew at one-year intervals after that. An Army spokesman, Paul Boyce, said the contract is expected to average about $200 million a year in the first two years" . . . . . . The Army never has been satisfied with that slogan. The jarheads seem to have a good PR-firm -- glitzy commercials and all that kind of stuff -- although marine life ain't necessarily all that flashy in real life. HOOAH!!!!

FHB You are right, I have never understood this "Army of One". I always wanted my son to be "Army of Many" They need a new slogan. How about - "Duty, Honor, Teamwork, The Army" The Army is the largest branch of the military. Each branch says they are the "Best, the Greatest" I guess that is why America has the Best military, because all branches strive to be the best !!! But if I would have to choose - I would choose - ___________ Ha ! You didn't think I would really choose did ya !?! I was born and raised a Marine brat, I graduated to a Marine wife and I finished an Army Mom. Who could ask for more. Oh, and to let everyone know my mother was in the Navy, an uncle in the Army, my paternal grandfather was in the Royal Air Force and I have a brother-in-law currently in Fallujah, Iraq serving in the Marine Corps. God, I love this country !!! And I will always love my Sky Soldiers and their families - you are what makes America GREAT !!!! Buon Natale to all "my" wonderful Italian ladies and Merry Christmas to the rest of you. May you have a peaceful and quiet holady. Mommaski

Well said Mommaski. Of course the Army's birthday, June 14th, preceded the Marines, making the Army, in addition to being the most powerful fighting force the world has ever known, our countries oldest. The Army's PR has never been on par with the Marines. I for one would like to see more emphasis on duty, honor, country, and the proud history and traditions of the Army, and less focus on the "Army of one" foolishness.

OOOh there's a new one - military branches taking potshots at each other !!! I had to laugh - my father was a Marine and so was my husband (Once a Marine , always a Marine)and my son was in the Army! Boy talk about confusion !!! For those who don't know how about a little history - The Marine Corps was founded on 10 Nov 1775. The Dept of the Navy was established 30 Apr 1798 (Hmmm who was first?)It is the 2nd smallest branch (only the Coast Guard is smaller)In WWI they gained the reputation of "First to Fight" (they have ever since been the first in - as they are the only branch directly under the command of The Commander in Chief)In WWII the Germans named them "Teufelshunde" meaning Devil Dogs. Marines are called Marines, Jarhead, Gyrene, Leatherneck, Devil Dog and even Uncle Sam's Misguided Children but NEVER Soldier (that is the Army). A soldier says Hooah, a Marine says Oorah (about for the same reasons). Marines do not have Chaplains or Corpsmans - they are supplied by the Navy (I was told "Marines are trained to kill not save")The Marine Corps thoughts on families - "If we had wanted you to have one, we would have issued you one - and they would have green baggy skin". The Army and Marine Corps have been rivals forever, however when it comes to getting the job done they work together like the greatest military in the world they are - then when things calm down they begin to harass each other !!! Each branch has their Heroes, their good and bad moments. As you can see I know more about the Marine Corps then I do the Army but I have been researching and learning the history of the 173rd. May ALL of our military have a safe and quiet Holiday. And to all our Sky Soldiers (Past and Present) We love you and we are proud of you. You are MY Heroes. Love Mommaski

I saw most of the show and it looked like the Wrasslin troupe was only in the North Eastern Part of Afghanistan where the (Infantry) Marines are based. At least the troupe made it to one FOB even though it was the Marines. Captain Kilbride, who I believe is in the 173rd Headquarters Company was the only mention of the 173rd. (there may be other support companies at Bagram who also saw the show). The Infantry Soldiers of the 173rd were basically left out, which is typical. It just shows that our soldiers are in the most remote and volatile areas of Afghanistan where no one wants to go. They are the real heros.

Rita Cosby's report was great to see, and it was clear that the WW guys have a lot of respect for our soldiers. I must add that I was a bit surprised to hear their Army Sgt. escort say that the Marines are fighting the enemy, while the soldiers are helping to rebuild the place. Perhaps he needs to get out more often, as while the Marines are shouldering their share of the fighting, the 173rd and other Army units are right there in the middle of it as well. Soldiers do it all.

This recent update was sent from our Sky Soldier to some of his college friends, we thought it might be of interest to other members of the 173rd family. Hi, It’s been quite a while since I’ve sent an update from Afghanistan, and while I’m sure some of you have been quietly celebrating the lack of clutter in your inboxes, I’ve had enough requests for another newsletter to get me back to the keyboard. Most importantly, all of my paratroopers are alive and well, and we managed to get through the summer fighting season relatively unscathed, though we’ve all lost a few friends in neighboring units. The fighting in Afghanistan tends to be a seasonal affair, with tumultuous summers and quiet winters. Once the high mountain passes are closed by winter snows, it becomes extremely difficult to move between valley systems without the helicopters that our enemies fortunately lack. So the insurgents tend to get bottled up in the villages, without the freedom to maneuver and conduct attacks. Without going into too much detail about the last six months, I’ll simply say that my experience here has involved much more combat, and much less “nation-building,” than I initially believed that it would. While much of Afghanistan is relatively quiet and stable, my guys and I have spent our tour out in the badlands, operating from tiny firebases on the eastern border with Pakistan. If anyone is looking for the ragged edge of American power and influence in the world, the line is quite literally drawn by our perimeter wire. We’re in the Konar, on the far side of the Kyber Pass, the place Kipling understood as the literal end of the civilized world, where “East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet.” The Konar is a region largely hostile to central government, and dominated by local warlords. The British Empire never controlled the place, the Russians never controlled the place, the Taliban never controlled the place, and we’ve got our hands full calming things down enough for Karzai’s government to have a shot at controlling the place. The stakes are a lot higher than the ability of a fledgling Central Asian government to collect taxes from a few border provinces. If we can’t set the conditions for good governance here, the area will return to its historical role as an al Qaeda safe haven, and a staging area for Jihadists going after the government in Kabul and international terrorists preparing for global attacks. It amazes me continuously that the safety and security of a place like New York can hinge on events in the mud hut, biblical villages of the Konar valleys, but that’s the world we all woke up to in 2001. So we spent the summer tracking down the insurgent leadership and the terrorist cells and training camps, shutting down their attempts to get an offensive going, and preventing them from wrecking the parliamentary elections in September. We were largely successful on all fronts, especially in securing the fall elections despite a few determined attempts to attack the polling sites, but there’s a great deal of work left to do here. On another positive note, a few of my more resourceful soldiers managed to find a pair of good-size turkeys in the middle of the Hindu Kush, and we fattened them up for almost a month before Thanksgiving. They made for good eating (turkey grilled on an open fire is surprisingly tasty), and we’re in the market for a few good Christmas gobblers right now. Thanks to many for your letters, emails, prayers, and well wishes. They mean more than you know to the guys out here. I hope everyone’s doing well, and enjoying the holidays back home, and I hope to see you all soon.

I just received and email from a dear lady that I tought I would share with you - I think it's a message. It's called The Penny. "You always hear the usual stories of pennies on the sidewalk being good luck, gifts from angels etc. This is the first time I've heard this twist. Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway and cars costing more than her house. The first day and evening went very well, and she ws delighted to have this rare look into how the very wealthy live. The host was very generous and took them to some of the finest restaurants. As the 3 of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of her and her husband. He suddenly stopped, looked down at the pavement for a long silent moment. There was nothing on the ground except a single penny and a few cigarette butts. Still silent the man bent down and picked up the penny. He held it up, smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What did this man need a single penny?!? Throughout dinner it bothered her, finally she couldn't take it any longer!!! She asked if the penny he had founf had been of some value. He pulled out the penny and showed it to her. What was the point of this?Look at it. He said. Read what it says. She read the words United States of America. No, read further. One caent? No keep reading. InGod we Trust? Yes !! And? And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust him? Who am I to pass that by? I pick up the coin as a response to God; that I do trust in Hiom. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!!! When I was shopping today, I found a penny and picked it up and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words In God We Trust and had to laugh.Yes, God I get the message." I think I will put a penny in my pocket - to remind me to Trust in God. Love to all of you. Mommaski

Thought this was worth sharing - it's a new day in the U.S. and as another day is ending in Afghanistan join me in giving thanks for our wonderful soldiers that are serving so far from home. Subject: Christmas Thanks I had no Christmas spirit when I breathed a weary sigh; looked across the table where the bills were piled too high. The laundry wasn't finished and the car I had to fix, My stocks were down another point, the Chargers lost by six. And so with only minutes till my son got home from school, I gave up on the drudgery and grabbed a wooden stool. The burdens that I carried were about all I could take; And, so I flipped the TV on to catch a little break. I came upon a desert scene in shades of tan and rust, No snowflakes hung upon the wind, just clouds of swirling dust. And where the reindeer should have stood before a laden sleigh, Eight Humvees ran a column right behind an M1A. A group of boys walked past the tank, not one was past his teens, Their eyes were hard as polished flint, their faces drawn and lean. They walked the street in armor with their rifles shouldered tight, Their dearest wish for Christmas: just to have a silent night. Other soldiers gathered, hunkered down against the wind, To share a scrap of mail and dreams of going home again. There wasn't much at all to put their lonely hearts at ease, They had no Christmas turkey, just a pack of MREs. They didn't have a garland or a stocking I could see, They didn't need an ornament--they lacked a Christmas tree. There's nothing wrong my little son, for safe we sleep tonight, Our heroes stand on foreign land to give us all the right, To worry of the things in life that mean nothing at all, Instead of wondering if we will be the next to fall. He looked at me as children do and said it's always right, To thank the ones who help us and perhaps that we should write. And so we pushed aside the bills and sat to draft a note, To thank the many far from home, and this is what we wrote: God bless you all and keep you safe, and speed your way back home. Remember that we love you so, and that you're not alone. The gift you give you share with all, a present every day, You give the gift of liberty and that we can't repay. (author unknown)

Chiara -- I am so, so sorry to hear about your father. When our husbands left, you may remember that your father was such a comfort to me and the other girls who were standing there watching the buses go. When I came up to him, a total stranger, crying, he just took me in as if I were his own. He was a wonderful man...and I only knew him for that one, sad day. He helped make it bearable for me. I know this message is coming to you late, but I just found out from your post...and wanted to let you know how much I appreciate him being part of that day for me,.and you for sharing him with me. I will never forget him. My sincere condolences to your family, even if they are coming late. I will e-mail you also, if I can find your address. Just wanted to post here so EVERYONE would know what kind of man your father was and what a support he was to this 173rd wife.

About notifications for soldiers injured. From personal experience, Once my son was stable and medicated at the medical facility in Afghanistan, they handed him a satellite telephone and told him to call home. He did and I had the full story. Eight hours later the Army causality branch called us and asked "has your son called you today" We told him yes and that end the official notification, 2 hours later his commander called and he was happy to hear we had spoken to our son and he didn't have to explain. All in all the process was quick and it had backups built into it. I thought you all might benefit from our experience

So what did he do - he turned to the person who always made him feel safe, the person who always made things better - his dad. It wasn't wrong that you shared, it was just that you shared too much. Now you know. My love and prayers are with you and your son. Mommaski

I apologize for my earlier posting. I did not mean to offend anyone or cause unnecessary worry for anyone. That was the last thing I intended to do. I read the information about the incident in an article on this very website and assumed that the family members would have already been notified considering an article had been posted about it. As for posting my son's name, I guess I didn't use my better judgement and I hope that I didn't get him in to any trouble. He and his fellow soldiers are enduring enough right now. He was just letting me know that there had been an incident the day before and that he was okay but another soldier had been injured. He obviously needed to get it off of his chest. I'm sure it is difficult to see something like that happen to your fellow soldiers. None of this was done or meant in a malicious manner by me, nor by my son. Please understand that when you get news like that, your mind is racing a mile a minute and thoughts and judgement are not always rational. I apologize for creating such a stir and will no longer make posts in this manner. Please remember that we are all here to support one another and are all in the same boat as far as our feelings and concerns go. That goes for me as well. I'm just a concerned father who wants his son back home safe. And I wish that for all of you as well. Thanks for your understanding and for listening.

Here we go again - You are right - this site is designed for info and support, but not at the cost of hurting someone else nor at the cost of a career of a young soldier. Many times our loved ones give us info they think that we will not share and info that we will. The rule of thumb is - if it pertains to injuries, casualties or movement - do NOT share. If it is "Heard from my son and everyone ok but cold" That is ok (and for me highly treasured !!!) For the one who said "oh there is a blackout until the next of kin is notified" Were you involved with Iraq? How many of you received phone calls from your loved ones between 8:42am on Christmas Eve til 2pm on Christmas Day? This is eastern time. I know for a fact that some parents received calls. I got an email from a mother on the 26th, her son told her on Christmas morning but told her that I may not have been notified so wait a couple of days. Being told that your son is "injured badly" or is dead is hard enough, but, to be told by someone on a website would have killed me (nor would I have been able to forgive them) The news was released in the media that 3 were injured - it did NOT however mention names or units. We are a family and it doesn't take us long to learn who is in our loved ones platoon - so now 14 families are panicked. So how about this - I read in the news that 3 soldiers were injured in Afghanistan, let us pray for them and their families. Then if the family wants to share (and I hope they feel comfortable enough to do this) we can gather around them and help in any way we can. There is a place here for everyone and if YOU don't think so - then... you go away. WE are a family !!! Well I will go now, I am having enough difficulty this month. All my love and prayers. May your Holiday be bright, full of friends and family, and full of only good news. Love Mommaski

To answer your question regarding "INJURY" notification . . . If a Soldier is injured and subsequently hospitalized (either in-theather or outside the country), and is in stable/good condition, the hospital command will encourage the Soldier to notify his PNOK (primary next-of-kin) of his injury and hospitalization HIMSELF. They will provide him the telephone access to do just that. If a Soldier is on the SI (Seriously Ill) list or VSI (Very Seriously Ill) list, the hospital command will ensure that the PNOK is notified -- BY THE ARMY. This notification usually made by telephone, also. HOWEVER, depending on the circumstances, sometimes SI or VSI notification is made in person, depending on the circumstances. If a Soldier is killed, the Army (Headquarters, DA) will assign a Casualty Assistance Officer who will ALWAYS make the notification IN PERSON.

I don't mean to upset anyone. I just think that everyone should have an open mind. Some of us don't get any news about our guys and we come to this site to keep us informed. I don't agree with the postings of dates and things that could get our soldiers in trouble. I know they are going through hell and want to make it home to their families. But you also have to look at the families point of view. We spend many sleepless nights wondering what is happening. We say goodbye to our soldier wondering if it is the last time we will see them again. I ignore the things on this site I do not agree with and I take in the things I need to hear. To the families who have lost loved ones, stay strong and know that God will be with you. Thank you and your soldier for all you have sacrificed. May God be with all of our soldiers and keep them safe.

Old Soldier in today's Army technology is everywhere. When there is an incident there is an internet/phone black out (in that particular area) until the next of kin is notified. By the time it is posted here the family has been notified. But, I am with you - if we don't like something that is said here we have options - turn off the computer, get info at another site, or ignore the comments. To Keltmom I am glad your son arrived back safely - that seems to be one of the only positive comments made today.

I think there has been alot worse things said on this site then the one about some of our soldiers getting injured. I agree with the person who said that none of our soldiers were killed -what a blessing -so why is everyone arguing about what was said. We all need to come to this site with our eyes wide open knowing that there might not be things that we would like to hear and not get worried about every single article that is printed. If an accident happens to your soldier, you will know as fast as they can get word to you. During this holiday season, many of us are facing our first christmas and first anniversarys without our soldiers and I know it is a very difficult time. It seems like there has been an awful lot of bickering lately; so much of it is so trivial. Let us not forget those families who have lost a loved one during OEF and let us not forget our soldiers who are facing being away from their family during this holiday season. They are the reason for this website. This website was not designed for fighting back and forth.

I don't know if you all realize this but if anything is posted that a soldier has called home to share in confidence, with the the ones he loves and trusts, he will get repremanded for it. Which by the way they have been told not to do by their superiors. Now for me I think that it is hard enough being a half a world away and doing what they are doing, then on top of it to get into trouble for something we should have kept to ourselves is just wrong. When my son calls home everything is fine, everyone is good, he doesn't want us to worry, I am not dumb I know that everything is not fine and that stuff happens, but if it helps him to think we are clueless then great. I love coming here to check but it really does me no good to hear that something bad has happened, just needless worry and Mr. Bradley has done an exceptional job posting the facts and keeping us updated. I hope everyone is have a great holiday season I am, the post office is my second home lately. I am trying to make my soldiers Christmas as good as I can to all Merry Christmas.

I think it is very rude to come to a public website forum to ask people to keep information to themselves. I'm sorry, but I think that's why we all come here. I don't like bad news either, but if it makes me pray a little harder or pay closer attention, then so be it. We're all welcome here & that is because of the generosity of Mr. Bradley. According to the release, there were no casualties...we can all thank our higher Power for that. Please don't get offended, nobody should leave the site out of anger, but we are all here to learn, read, ask questions, and gain the support we seek.

OK Army Wife - I'll leave the site. If you think the Army notification is faster than a Sergeant emailing his family with news that never should have left the compound, you are sadly mistaken. But you guys can have the site and I'll get my news from my other sources.

I think a lot of us that do not hardly get any information likes the news that is posted on this site. We like to be informed of what is going on, at least I do. We are here to support each other, and have done a pretty good job of it. If you don't like the words that are posted, no one is making you come back to this site. God bless all of our soldiers. It seems that no matter how many times it is said on this site, people like being the first to tell everyone that they have news, regardless how bad or how little is known. Please do not put information about casualties on this site, particularly with unit designators, until those loved ones have been notified and official notifications are made. It serves no purpose, other than to get everyone here upset. Since you knew your son was OK, you are at peace while the rest of us wonder if we will get that visit or call. Please keep this information to yourself and just be grateful that it was not your child involved.

I know everyone says that we shouldnt post things since this is an open site and we need not to give information to the enemy. With that said, we also need to watch what we say due to high ranking officials who monitor this site on a daily basis. When we mention dates or even that our soldiers our out for several days, our troops get in trouble for this because we are not suppose to know this because it is a security violation. Lets just watch what we say to protect our soldiers.

Hi everyone, Well I see December is here. For those of you who were not involved in Iraq, go to Iraq messages for Dec, Jan and Feb. For you others you must remember what it was like. The countdown started and everyone was getting different dates and everybody was getting confused and some were getting up in arms. Well it seems - here we go again. For those of you who don't know or don't remember - family members started getting dates and hints of dates in December. It turned out that they did NOT all come back at the same time !!! Some came home in January - they prepared the way for the rest to return. Some left Iraq in Febuary and went to Kuwait to wait. The bulk came home in March and some brought up the rear several weeks later. Guess what folks - probably be the same way. My suggestion is if you get a date from your loved one - HOORAY !!!! But the best thing to do is wait on sharing it. First there is danger in releasing a date on an open web site, second not everyone will come home at the same time and you will either get everyone's hopes up and some you will depress. I already have dates for 2 of "my" Sky Soldiers - and they are not the same date !!! The other thing is don't get complacent - keep saying those prayers !!! They are not home yet and until I know that every single one has stepped safely onto Italian soil, I will worry, pray and generally be a nut case. If you need to focus on something pertaining to them coming home - contact the FRG or one of the wives back in Italy and see what you can do to help with the Homecoming Celebration. They will need money and helping hands and ideas. Let's make it the BEST homecoming ever !!! Let's show people how the Sky Soldiers do it !!! Too all of "my kids" stay safe, take care and be strong. We love you and we are proud of each and every one of you. Love Mommaski

I just wanted to say that I have just recently started getting info from my FRG. My husband is in HHC 1/508 Scouts. I know that there are alot more soldiers in HHC then the other companys. So to all the wives who are currently in Vicenza. They need all the help they can get. I am so grateful to Charity Seagraves , she has been sending me emails and keeping me informed on the return date. It takes more than one person to run a FRG. So I want to thank Charity and all the wives back in Vicenza for their time. To the families who are trying to get in touch with their loved ones FRG. The # to the post iformation is 011390444717111. You can try to ask for the family readiness and they can maybe help you get the FRG info. But not all FRG groups are the same. I think if you contacted your loved ones FRG and gave you name and information they would probably send you an email with the monthly info. I am not promising anything. It is the season to be JOLLY!!!

Some of the soldier only have their parents and no one else...Sad that you have to be married to a soldier to know have the FRG person to contact you..Thank goodness my son calls me or I wouldnt know anything...

Sorry to say.... but at least some people have an FRG that keeps them informed on things. I NEVER hear from my FRG & have been nothing but disappointed about it during this entire deployment. So for those of you who DO get information/messages, please consider yourself very lucky. For those of us who never get correspondence from our FRG for whatever reasons (some aren't eligible for FRG info, etc), we use this site to reach out for anything we can get. We're not asking for people to post exact dates, we KNOW when our Sky Soldiers left Italy, we just want to know if we will ever find out when they're coming home & how that will happen - that's all. Thanks to the person who reminded us that the dates can change often, that's something I would've never known without reading this site.

They are all very dear to me. Matthew is very special and always will be to me and my family. We are so proud of him. He had dinner with my family while he was home in June for his brother's graduation. What a gift that was!!! He was a very proud soldier. He was a very exceptional young man, and very dedicated to his brothers that he was serving with. There's just not enough words to express how Matthew has touched our lives. I have a box of goodies that I was going to send to Matthew for Christmas, but would like to send it on to the boys that are still in Afghanistan. Could you help me out? I am not too familiar with millitary protocol. Can I just send it to his regualr address and someone else will get it? Thank You All~ God Bless you and your Soldiers

I know we are all excited for the soldiers to come home, but to the best of my knowledge and from what I have been told by my husband, my FRG, and my husbands commander, A full year means whenever Brigade took complete control, and that was not in Feb. I know that for a fact. Close, but not quite. We had advon Parties that left in Feb, we had soldiers also leave in March and as well as April. However, that doesn't mean that soldiers won't be returning home sooner, and some even later, it depends when they left as well. And of course we all know it also depends when the next group comes to replace our soldiers too. We all know that things will change regarding dates and times at least 20 more times, it's the Army! *Laughing*. But hey, we are getting closer and that's something to smile about!! I hope this helps a little.

My husband has told me approx, I am willing to share info with the people I know, but not just openly across the web. Their safety comes first. From what I have heard, the 10th is the recommended date if you want to get packages there before Christmas by sending them priority, not the last time to send packages before they come home. I would assume that would be some time after the first of the year. Happy holidays to you all.

Dear 173rd Family Several of the 173rd Parents attended the Service for Matthew. What an Incredible young man he must have been, Everyone who spoke of him considered him their best friend. He was an avid outdoorsman and his friends shared many stories and in the midst of so much sorrow and gave us all a chuckle, he must have been a little micheivious. His mom sang a song, what an amazing woman she is, I have not seen that much dignity and Grace in my life. His sisters also read verses from the Bible. The Service was held in Mt. Shasta at the Catholic Church and the Father did an amazing job. The Army did a great job honoring Matthew, his family was presented with all the Medals he so rightfully deserved. The Highway Patrol presented him with a California State Flag sent by Govener Shwartzeneger that had flown at half mast in front of the Capitol. Several 173rd Vietnam Vets also attended from all over Catifornia and representd all the great men who have served their country. They fired a 3 round volley and played taps and as Matthew was driven away his best friends blew on their Duck calls. It was all so moving. May God Bless Matthew's Family at this time I know he will comfort them in this hour of need. God Bless all our Soldiers and keep them safe.

I printed this in 2002 and wanted to pass along: Twas the night before Christmas, He lived all alone,In a one bedroom house, made of plaster and stone. I had come down the chimney with presents to give, and to see just who in this home did live. I looked all about, a strange sight I did see, No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. No stocking by mantle, just boots filled with sand, On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands. With medals and badges, awards of all kinds, a sober thought came through my mind. For this house was different, It was dark and dreary, I found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly. The soldier lay sleeping, silent and alone, curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home. The face was so gentle, the roomin such disorder, not how I pictured A UNITED STATES SOLDIER. Was this the hero of whom I'd just read? Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed? I realized the families that I saw this night, owed their lives to these soldiers, who were willing to fight. Soon round the world, the children would play, and grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas Day. They all enjoyed freedom, each month of the year, because of the soldiers, like the one lying here. I couldn't help wonder, how many lay alone, on a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home. The very thought, brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees, and started to cry. The soldier awakened, and I heard a rough voice, "Santa don't cry, this life is MY choice: I fight for freedom, I don't ask for more, my life is MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS." The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep, I couldn't control it, I continued to weep. I kept watch for hours, so silent and still, and we both shivered, from the cold night's chill. I didn't want to leave, on that cold, dark, night, this guardian of honor, so willing to fight. Then the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure, whispered, "carry on Santa, it's Christmas day, all is secure." One look at my watch, and I knew he was right, "Merry Christmas, my friend, and to all a good night!" This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Hope you all enjoy.

Will not take but a couple of minutes but it is something for them.

Received an e-mail from Sgt. Nathan Garcia A. Co. 1/508. All is well, very busy, and very cold. He already received all the Christmas presents and decorations that we sent him and his squad. Nathan wanted me to say that all the soldiers are very appreciative of everything that we do here for them. It helps keep the morale up. Arlene

I wanted to thank everyone who sent my son ,Clint Werner, cards and also said prayers for him when he was injured in September. Clint was just on the phone and said he is returning to Afghanistan tonight. He is doing well and cant wait to return to his buddies. Mr. Crowley I told him about you wanting phone numbers and he gave this to me, for the rear detachment DSN 6347509. He said you should know to figure out the rest. He also said to tell you hi and cant wait to see you. He worked on you when you were injured and was concerned about you. Again thanks for all the prayers. I thank God everyday for protecting him. God bless all the soldiers and bring them all home safe.

I need to contact the Rear Detachment in Italy regarding my condition and my medical board discharge situation and can't seem to find their number on the internet. If anybody has a contact number for brigade, 1/508 or HHC's rear D number or email I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You.

Well, I just got to spend 15 days with my son! We had a blast! We did all of the running around and visiting family and friends. Some of the time we just sat at home and watched movies. Of course I stuffed him full of turkey and pumpkin pie. It was so good to see him. He is a little thinner and a lot wiser. He was looking forward to getting back to his platoon. That is his "home away from home" now. It was a little easier sending him off this time knowing that it will only be a few months instead of a whole year before we get to see him again. Season's greetings to all of the 173rd Airborne soldiers and their families.

To Heather, this is Jessica in Vicenza. A friend of Logan's would like your address to send a note to you and your family. They PCS'd from here last summer and are at Ft. Bragg and Logan was one of Dustin's friends (or it could be Devin - I always forget which is the older one). Their last name is Dyer. If you don't mind, you could send your mailing address to my e-mail account and I will send it on to Jill (their mother). Please remember, my thoughts and prayers are with your family, especially during the holidays, and always.

Hi All I just got the best news, my son is coming home for Christmas!!! He originally did not want to take any leave but I guess that changed and he is coming home. I was so excited this afternoon I didn't know what to do first. Here is the thing I have already shipped all his presents to Afghanistan!! Is that the funniest thing you ever heard? I don't care I will just go out and get more. I have stepped up my holiday decorating and ordered a welcome home banner and shampooed his carpet. Tomm I start to bake and cook all his favorite foods. Oh finally I have something to be happy about. He has not been home since after Iraq and doesn't that seem like a lifetime ago for us all? Well Merry Christmas everyone may you all find some peace of mind this year. Michele

Hello Everyone !!! Well The Hero Tree has a new visitor !!! For the last 6 days we have had a Red Tailed Hawk land on the tree every morning for about 10 minutes. He seems to look over the tree, spreads his wings and flaps a couple of times and then flies away. I keep trying to get a picture of him but he has outsmarted me every time. My husband says it is a spirit and I am not meant to photograph him. He says the Hawk is watching over our Sky Soldiers. He is beautiful and very powerful looking. I think he is the perfect spirit for "My Heroes" !!!! Take care and stay safe "my children" You are loved

Just heard from my son, Able Co. 2nd Platoon 2-503rd. A wake up call at 4:30am. What a great way to wake up. He said all was fine. They were very busy and were getting ready to out again. Connection was horrible. He said that where they were the lines were not good. But we communicated in spite of it. It was just so good to hear from him since it has been a while now. Just thought I would let you know that all is well with that particular group. God Bless Our Soldiers. Kathy
