Messages to our Sky Soldiers in Iraq

This web site is not responsible for what comments may be posted here.

There are so many messages here that this page may take some time to load. Please be patient.

It has come to my attention that some people are using this message board to attack individuals, the command, the 173d Airborne and the whole US Army in general. If these individuals would take the time to read the disclaimer at the bottom of the MENU page they would see that, "This site is in no away affiliated with the 173d Airborne Brigade in Vicenza, Italy or the Society of the 173d Airborne Brigade. It is however just what it says...dedicated to all Sky Soldiers Past and Present by;  Honoring the past, Supporting the present and Encouraging the future. All are welcome to drop in." Now in plain English this means this is a site ...dedicated to all Sky Soldiers. Writing nasty letters, displaying your hatred for any sky soldier or the unit is NOT WELCOME, take your hatred some place else. The Sky Soldiers need and deserve our support. I alone own and operate this site, a real one man shop. I served with the 173d in Vietnam and did 23 years in the Army. I love the 173d Airborne, the US Army and the United States of America. I see enough hatred for the American Military in the US press. Also do not post any rumors or hear say about things that my scare or worry the troops or their families. Use some common sense or I'll delete your message.

Well time has come to shut down this message board, this will be the last message. In retrospect, this was to be a short, go get'em, given hell, message board to support the troops but it quickly grew into a family message board, a link between troops and individuals and much more. Great words where written here as well as some personal political crap. I tied my best to let every have a voice but some people just had to be filtered out.

The photo section also grew into its own. So much so that I will have to look at ways of cutting my operational cost. This site, this year cost me personally several thousand of dollars, ...money well spent. But, if as I expect the HERD moves onto another combat operation in the future I will have to find ways to cut cost. Some people have accused me profiting from this site. I just want to say for the RECORD, not one penny of any calendar, coin, item or book that may be linked to on this site comes back to me. It all goes to various chapters of the society or individuals that all turn around and put that back into packages for the troops.

As for me this site is my therapy, a way of battling my monsters from long ago. I take pride knowing I have a son in the 173d and as for me I have been writing my own story ( www.GoodBetterBest.net) that will come out later this year. A new 2005 calendar us getting ready to go to print and I have been contracted by Turner Publishing to do the 3rd Edition of the Sky Soldier book. Expect to see the official announcement in July 04. It will be your chance for your Sky Soldier to record his own personal history.

I just want to say to all the Sky Soldiers, past and present, your the best of the best. If your humbleness stops you from believing that then explain to me why the Army chose the 173d to make the only line unit combat jumps in Vietnam and Iraq. Your the Tip of the Spear and I am proud as hell to be able to support you guys.

Blue skies and soft PLFs

Mr. Bradley: Well there isn't any more thanks I can write that has not already been written on these pages. You and your work here have provided a tremendous service for all the airborne families and friends. Our family cannot repay you. However, I suppose after about 35+ years of dedication to your country, your 173rd buddies, and now our sons and daughters, it is apparently second nature to you. God bless and keep you and yours from this day forward. But..... It would be fitting, and I think I speak for all of us, if you would write the last message and post it somewhere on the 173rd webpage. In my opinion it would be a fitting end to a year's worth of hard work for you, and bring a proper closure to a tumultuous year for all of us. If not, fare thee well soldier and we'll see you when we see you.

Thank you Mr. Bradley. I have checked out this site daily since last March. It has been very helpful to those of us with loved ones serving in Iraq. Even though my son has been home for the past two weeks (he returns to Italy on Friday)I have still clicked on this site to see how everyone else was doing. I also wanted to thank all of the Sky Soldiers that served in Iraq. It is because of guys like you that we continue to be free and live the life many only dream about. Special thanks to Able Company 3rd PLT. Thank you for watching my son's back and keeping him safe. Chad, I'm so proud of you. GO AIRBORNE!!!

HI Everyone, Steve has been home for almost 2 weeks one week to go and I am so enjoying or time. We have had a huge party and a few family dinners and it has been so nice. We are planning a trip to Boston for a Bruins game and will have Easter dinner early as he has to go back before then. We have seen a change in him in some instances. He is self assured and confident but also a little snappy and swears alot. He says Iraq was okay and he didn't feel threatened by the people. He seems to drink alot more than he used to but we are letting it slide as we feel it would be pointless to try and get him to tone it down. He loves his bed and the food I am cooking. HE has my car and cell phone and his HS friends are just in awe of him. I guess life is good for now. I will give him support and love and food and anything else he needs and continue to support others over in Iraq. Steve will go to Afghanistan next so I will not be saying good bye here as I will need your support who ever is left. I hope there are a few of us left who come to share info and let off some steam! For now we are content and happy at the Dodge household. Life is good. Talk soon and God Bless Michele

First of all, Thank you Mr. Bradley for this site and the message page that helped so many of us get through our troopers deployment!!. Many of the family and friends of troopers, that have met here, will be forever linked through their tears of both joy and sorrow. I also want to thank everyone who contributed support to each other via this site. My son came through safe since jumping in and, without this sight, I don't know how I would have made it through this past year. God bless you Mr. Bradley, God Bless the 173rd and their families, and God Bless America. Wingdad

Dear Mrs Mommaski, you don't know me, but really I need to say thank you for your words: I don't know you but I know you're a special woman. You are helping me a lot. I'm an Italian girlfriend, my soldier is here, safe, and I can just thank you God and the heaven...I'm the most happy girl in the world. But he is so changed, he needs more freedom, sometimes he prefers to stay alone, sometimes we are together but he is distant...he used to be warm, ..but without your email (1st March) probably my reaction was a bad reaction, instead when I feel edgy, cause he is different and cold with me, I think to your wise words, and I'm just happy to be again with him, and I try to be my best to give him what he needs, also if this sometimes hurts me...well, unlucky I never met your son, but both of you are always in my heart. Thank you again.

Hi All, I too would like to say Thank you and Goodbye to everyone. Thank you very much Mr Bradley. Your site allowed me to get to know many airborne families and get me away from the sadness and loneliness of the past year. I became an airborne fan and just wanted to be part of this too. Us Italians are proud of the Sky Soldiers and glad that they are stationed in our country. As an Italian, I can honestly admit that I’ve never seen Italians giving so much support before. I must thank the Americans who taught us how to show and give real support. My thoughts go to our fallen soldiers; no day passes by that I don’t think of our 9 guys who gave their all. I just hope that during the time they spent in Italy my country treated them well. I want their families to know that we care. Hugs to Everyone in Italy and the U.S.A. Adele

I have wrapped my arms around my son, your comrade, your battle buddy, one of America's heroes and most of all a Sky Soldier. It was the thrill of my life to see him with his buddy coming off of their flight. I can only look at them as once young men and now experienced soldiers. America, I have laid my eyes on two men you have entrusted to let you sleep peacefully at night and wander by day without the threat of terrorism on our homeland. I hope that all can appreciate their dedication and sacrifice. Their lives as well as ours have changed. I can only hope that we, collectively, can continue to support our troops while they fight the fight. I will never ask him to tell me anything he doesn't want to tell me, but I will let him know that I support him 100% even though people continue to protest the war. I hope that we can see passed the politics and know that several Iraqis are happier now than before. They are also willing to stick it out and become the independent country they deserve to be. Knowing the Mr. Hussein stole from them by using the Oil for Food funding provided by the UN only confirms the reason we unseated him. I am so proud of the 173rd Airborne for their accomplishments and to our American troops who stepped in so that my son could join me for a few weeks and enjoy his time away from his duty. God Bless our troops.

hi ALL picked up my son last night in the blizzard it was fun. We all had on our HOOAH T-shirts and yelled out a big HOOAH when he came out of the gate! Too funny. It took us a few ours to get home but it was nice. I packed up some food and snacks and we all just ate and talked the whole way. When we got home we ate again and had some wine and then went to bed. This am we are going to rent him a car and visit some family. This weekend a big party!!! Enjoy your time with your soldiers everyone. Happy Mom in Mass. Michele

Whew! I was gone a week and came back and thought I lost this website because the new page came up. So many people to thank: Mr. Bradley for this website, Glen Bayer for starting our A Company email group, the inspiration of those family members who lost their loved ones, the funny postings that made me laugh, and the heartfelt postings that made me cry. My son comes home tonight and steps off that plane at 11 p.m. I really don't know what to think that it is finally over, for now at least. I will enjoy my precious time with him. But I want the website military families to know how much it has meant to me to have this site to go to and communicate. It truly has been a blessing! (We didn't have this when he went to Kosovo with the 82nd in 1999.) I will keep checking in on this site to see how everybody is doing. Once again, THANKS Mr. Bradley for all that you have done to bring us together!

Today we met my son at the airport. It was such a great feeling to once again give him a big hug. We had lots of friends and family there along with a local TV station. The homcoming aired on the local news and as a result we got calls from friends we have not heard from in years. It was a great day. Once again Mr. Bradley thank you for making this board available to all of us.

I will also admit that I have gotten addicted to this website (for good reasons) and the reasons were an outlet of information of the where-a-bouts of my favorite American Army Soldier...SSG. Mario Singer...while station in Iraq. This personal message is to all the parents of our American Soldiers...it has not been easy, if fact it has been a very difficult experience, so difficult for the fact that we have had to sit back and allow our children to become what they are today...and that we could not be there to protect them from the cruel world...you know, we gotta love them and we raised them to be what they are today...WOW...just want to say "THANK YOU" to each and everyone of you...GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU...Suzann Singer...And Thank you Mr. Bradley for making this possible...a website of communication!!!

When my son called last week and I mentioned the prices I was seeing on this website to fly to the states, he didn't seem to concerned. I think he would pay anything just to get a break from it all. It's pathetic that they have to pay that much--especially considering what they had to go through to earn that $1500.00 and it's all gone in one flight home for a little sanity. Amazing that one place it can be $800 and another place twice as much for the same seat, same time, same destination. Who was promoting SATO anyway, and WHAT is SATO? Is it an Army based travel service?

Make sure your soldier watches his/her account if they used a check card to purchase their ticket at SATO. I do most of my son's banking and noticed the amount available on his account was reduced by the ticket amount when it was purchased at SATO (the balance stays the same, but the amount available is held until the transaction is posted with the bank). Today I checked and noticed the amount of the ticket was no longer being held. In a panic, I called my son and was told that he already had the ticket and boarding pass. I then called Delta and was told that they have no info (no ticket number, etc) other than his name associated with the flights and they told me that boarding passes are not issued more than 24 hours before a flight. I then called the bank and was told the amount of the purchase is no longer held if the transaction does not clear within 4 days. The bottom line is, it will eventually clear, but I have to keep reminding a 19 year old, who is eager to make up for lost time spending money while in Iraq, that he really doesn't have that much money in his account. I know a credit card is much wiser to use, but most 18 year olds (when he went to Iraq) are unable to get them.

My son will be home in 4days. I cannot wait. I've been writing Army Times for 6 months complaining about their coverage of the 173rd (or lack of coverage), and they don't even send a reply. We can look at articles and pictures of the Marines in Haiti in ARMY Times, but can't see airborne soldiers returning home to Italy, getting combat jump wings, or building a school in Kirkuk. They missed some great stories over the past 12 months, but they really don't care.

Well, I felt I had to post a last message on this board. I hardly ever posted but I too am addicted and check it 2-3 times a day. It was a thread to hold onto, something to feel connected to while my son was deployed. It was comforting to read, to feel the support for the troops and each other. Thank you Mr. Bradley. I was so impressed with the grace and dignity that Jessica Herbert and Mommaski displayed. This will remain with me forever. I admire their courage. Thank you to the troops who did an outstanding job. God bless those who are not returning. They will be with us always. I've enjoyed the laughs over FBB. (you know who you are) Now that my son is almost home (3 days but whose counting) I am having such mixed feelings. Nervousness over if he's changed or not, how this experience has affected him. Also I feel very emotional lately. I think it's because after a year of holding all those feelings of worry and fear etc. to the back of my mind, it's ready to be released now. It just keeps bubbling up. Well, I felt the need to share, so thanks and everyone take care. YEAH AIRBORNE!

Hey, I'm just another rattled parent appalled at what my son had to pay for a ticket home. It cost him $1,100.00 to fly from Venice to Dallas on American Airlines. I got online this weekend and found the same ticket for $837.00 at Expedia. I tried to talk him into letting me do something but he is afraid something might goof and interfere with his ticket home. I just think it sucks that we were told to wait on the tickets because they would be so much cheaper with SATO and at military rates. Any suggestions. Thank you very much American Airlines. I don't quite know what I am going to do after this month and the end of the postings on this site - I have become quite addicted I'm afraid! - I check the postings several times a day even now when I know my son is safe back in Italy and will be coming home for a visit in just another few days. I have so enjoyed reading all the posts honoring and supporting our soldiers and gaining valuable links that I could go to for other articles and info about them. I have spent innumerable hours during the past year scouring the internet as I'm sure you all have too, just looking for any mention of the 173rd and anything they have been involved in. I have used at least 2 reams of paper printing articles, pictures, etc.! Thank you Mr. Bradley for your continued dedication to the 173rd - I know everyone is thankful for you and this website that you have maintained so beautifully. For many of us it was an valuable lifeline. And may God bless the families of the Sky Soldiers who will not be returning. We will make it our mission to make sure they are never forgotten.

To: Srdh person. You said that "You were in" (I assume the military is what you meant here). I believe I wrote below that those who had problems understanding or accepting RHIP either were never in the service...or if they were-- they did not stay in very long. If you made a career of it and you say Srdh...you must have found a way to accept That Srdh & RHIP were a way of life for you. If not. You got out before you put 20+ years in. I think our veterens put up with a lot of negative stuff because of the job they chose to do. I think I will continue to call it RHIP as opposed to the negative term you discussed if you don't mind. I prefer to chose to respect our military service people whether they were officer or enlisted. An no. I was never in and no one in my family is a military officer. But, I respect our military and have a little bit of understanding of why the military does some of the things it does. But it is not personal for sure. Because they don't have time to personally do things to make others feel bad.

I know it looks and sounds bad when people think that the only people recognized in the military are the higher ranking officers, but believe me it is not personal and it is not done to intentionally forget all the other little lower ranking guys. It doesn't make much sense to civilians, but RHIP is just one of the facts of military life things that makes the military an appealing career to so many young working-class Americans. This is becaue they get to see people in the military advance in their a careers. Young soldiers see this practice of RHIP and look forward to working hard so that they can make a higher rank...And this is why... RHIP-means "Rank Has Its Privileges." People in the military for any length of time recognize this as a fact of life, accept it, and go about the affairs of military life desiring to do their best to get promoted in rank. Those who don't understand it or can't find a way to live with it... Either have never been in the military, or if they were, they didn't stay in very long. It works for them this way. It is not an intentional disregard for the sacrifices of all the soldiers in the brigade.

Has anyone noticed that the homecoming pictures were of the col and his group? How convenient that there were no publicity photos of the other groups. I think it is horrible that the men who were the first to set foot on Iraqi soil and the last to leave have no photos on this site.

The soldiers who can only take 17 days may only be home for 17 because it was cheaper to leave later and come home sooner. A lot of the block leave days were sold out on the airlines so they may have had to wait. I am sure they will get 30 days off just not all at home. I am sure they just had to juggle the days to afford it. I know you all want the whole 30 but truthfully it is probably better they have some time alone before going home just to catch their breath and reflect on what they have done the last year. Just enjoy every minute you have with them and know they are safe now. I hope you all have wonderful visits with your soldiers.

He didn't get the 30 days R & R while he was in Iraq and he is bitter about only getting 17 days leave. I'm shaking my head both 'yes' and 'no' at the same time. I certainly agree that it's great to have our troops home, at whatever the price; and, I agree that you can't whine about taxes and 'gimmies' at the same time (although, most of us do). I do feel that there are 2 groups in our country that need undivided support from everyone: (1)our troops deserve the best without question; and, (2) our teachers. Both, soldiers and teachers make large sacrifices in life to benefit all the rest of us. My only beef with transportation for the troops is this: Most soldiers don't have a choice whether they will be based overseas. The troops based in CONUS get a free hop back just because they're based here. So, they are at an advantage, over the fellows and gals overseas. Isn't there something just a little discriminatory in that? Just my opinion.

Bush's speech didn't make any difference to the troops' pay. He never said the "war was over" - that's what CNN said. He said that the major offensive was over and now we were into stabilizing the country. It is called hazardous duty pay and our troops received it - some folks know it as combat pay. Same thing.

Watch those airfares!! My son, John, tried to book a flight to NY from Venice through SATO Travel on base and the fare was around $1100. He called me to see if I could get a better fare. I contacted Delta Airlines, requested a "military fare" and was given a fare of $702.84. The only requirement was, John would have to pick the ticket up in Venice and show his military ID to show he really was military. No Problem. He went back to SATO told them he had the confirmation number from Delta and LOW AND BEHOLD, the fare was pulled up at even $20 CHEAPER than Delta. John told me about one soldier that had to pay $2800 for a ticket to Sacramento and return. I went on line and the cheapest was $1317 and the most expensive was $2314. Our soldiers are, again, being ripped off by SATO. I contacted a Congressman about the rip off. John said his fare was probably reduced because he was insistant and had a confirmed flight number and rate! PLEASE, PLEASE help your soldier out and try to get a reduced "military fare" for them with a confirmation number. I could not purchase a discount ticket for John even on Orbitz or Travelocity because the flight was ORIGINATING overseas and returning overseas. But just getting the flight booked here help John. These soldiers need every dime they have earned and so do their families. It does NOT need to go to some agency that has NO CONCERN for the soldiers. I say all this having been a licensed travel agent trained with United Airlines several years ago. Norma Jean Perkins

If I am not mistaken, I do not believe that our soldiers drew combat pay after the war was "declared over" by Mr. Bush, we were not at war after that, I think they only drew hazard pay of some sort. But you can't get combat pay if your not in a declared war zone.

You are right. I realize $1000 is alot of money, but, you know what? I would pay 3x that amount if I could only see my son again. I along with 8 other families don't have that choice. Yea they served their country with honor and bravery - our Sky Soldiers are the BEST!!!!! But, there are soldiers still there fighting and they will need R&R. So the government will pay for them. You have your soldier back - don't you think that money is sort of a petty concern? Most will find a way to get back to you!!! They probably feel that any amount is worth the cost to come home!!! Way to go Sky Soldiers - Welcome home!!!!!

I'm sorry, but on the one hand everyone is complaining about how much money our government takes from us in taxes and on the other hand we want them to pay for everything. It can't be both ways. My son - looking at his own situation as an E-4 - figured he saved $6,000 - 7,000 in federal and state taxes during the year he was gone, drew combat pay while he was there and feels like paying $1000 to come home and see family is a bargain. I am proud of my son for serving, I am proud of my nation for supporting him while he was in combat, and I think I am paying a small price to have him home again. Not everyone has that opportunity. Let it go!

I'm sorry ,but I find this amazing. Our son's and daughter's just risked nearly a year (in most cases) of their live's for this country, yet they must provide for their own airfare from italy back to the states. The fact that the cost of these flights represents 2,3 or 4 weeks of pay for them is utterly ridiculous to me. I am sorry, but I truly feel these costs should be absorbed by our military/and or goverment.

My son checked at two different travel agencies in Vicenza, including SATO and said they were $1300 to San Francisco. I was able to get him a ticket from the states for a $1075 and that was paying a little more in order to get "e-tickets" on all legs of the trip. I was afraid I wouldn't have time to mail him a paper ticket which would've been a little cheaper. I'm confused as to why the high price was quoted to him....according to everything I"ve read here, everyone swears by SATO. Has anyone booked a flight to San Francisco (Oakland, San Jose) for less than $1300? Just curious. Thanks!

Mr. Engle - I'm not sure where your son is trying to go and the times/dates, but the going rate on Delta from Venice to Atlanta is about $650 for civilians - and SATO has negotiated better rates from Vicenza's office. Yes, soldiers can take Air Force (MAC) flights from Aviano or other locations in Europe to the STates, but they cannot reserve seats. They will fly "stand-by", may get to Baltimore - but it might be Bangor, ME, or Charleston, SC, or even McChord AFB, WA. No guarantees and they can waste several days of leave hoping for a flight out of Italy and even worse, will have to leave several days early to make sure they get a flight back. And the flight back may take them as far as Frankfurt or Ramstein, Germany! For the SATO prices of tickets, the troops should get a ticket, with a reserved seat, and make sure they get back to Italy on time in April.

This is a message to the person who responded to Ms. Sweeney's post with, "Get over it lady." When you respond to someone is this manner, you are "putting a bad taste in their mouth" so to speak about the soldiers and their families. I can understand Ms. Sweeney's question. My daughter is an eighth grade teacher whose class wrote to my son and other soldiers in his unit. They have asked my daughter why they have not heard back. Because she is his sister, she could explain to them why they did not hear from him. You can understand children asking -- they do not understand what it is like in a war situation. Either does anyone else unless you have been there; if you are a family member, you have somewhat of a better understanding. I'm sure the children waited patiently, and when they did not hear they questioned their teacher. Please try to understand their perspective. I'm sure that now that someone has explained the situation to Ms. Sweeney, she can give an explanation to her class, but when a rude response is given, a project they had fun with is turned into a negative experience.

I'm reading the conflicting amounts on airfare. Eight hundred plus to no money. My son did mention that he's being charged the amount he is due to his new orders for Ft Bragg, but will spend a month on leave before reporting and will be home soon. He is only being charged $14.00. It must have to do with the fact he is stopping on leave on his way to his next duty. To "Papa 'O'", I wonder if my son and your grandson will run into each other :). Mine is going into PsyOps as his MOS and has re-enlisted. He is currently "roaming" Rome for a few days before heading hime. In all the time he's been in Italy (over three years short of the 10 months in Iraq) he's never seen Rome so wants to take advantage of it while he can before heading home. I hope he's having an incredibly good time, he and all the soldiers deserve all the enjoyment they can get!!

My grandson , (173rd Airborne Ranger, 74th Infantry Detachment, returned to Vicenza on Feb. 28th. Last Saturday(Feb 28th) he informed us that he is waiting for his orders to be signed and that the Military is paying for the airfare back home. Will have a 30 day leave, then down to Ft Bragg for a month, and then to Ft Polk , LA for duty as an instructor.

Spoke to my son last night. I checked ticket prices on line and found them from $2315 to $1200. The cheapest at cheaptickets.com. My son informs me that with help from SATO, he has reserved a ticket for about $840. Sounds like the best bet for the soldiers is to follow this route, also. Ticket date is the 15th but he states that could change.

My son is flying home very soon from Vicenza and due to ordering his tickets himself as a soldier got an incredible deal on not only the flight home but includes his flight later to Ft Bragg the end of the month. The soldiers really need to order the tickets themselves as military personnel. I don't think it does any good to check on prices from home, as much as it helps make you feel like you're doing something to help (I know this from experience :), you won't be given correct information.

Deanna Sweeney: Please let your students know that their letters were more than likely received by these soldiers and while they did not receive a response I am sure that they did not go unnoticed or unread. If the letters were written in November I can understand why they did not receive a response from them. If you would like to send me an e-mail maybe I, as a parent of a soldier, can explain to your students why they didn't hear from them. I will tell you that I heard from my son in October again in January and then on February 20th. Their time and space was very limited and at times they worked longer shifts than many of us could ever imagine. I'll wait to hear from you.

To Deanna Sweeney, I understand your disappointment along with your students'. However, please understand that the soldiers deployed in Iraq were very busy and not always able to write or correspond at all due to the living conditions they were in at the time. Not only were they busy but they were perhaps going through one of the most trying and stressful challenges that a person can endure. War is hell. There is a constant sense of stress along with fear, homesickness, etc. I am sure that the soldiers appreciated your students' letters of support. I'm sure many of them saved them for a day when they needed a little cheer or a reminder of home. Be assured: a lack of reply does not imply a lack of appreciation. I sincerely do mean any harm when I say this...because I am sure your students are disappointed and would have been willing to do more. But perhaps the greatest gift you can give your students is the lesson that one of the greatest acts of human kindness is to do a good deed without the hope of anything in return.

The post in Vicenza - every post as a matter of fact - has an airline ticket office that can make all arrangements for soldiers on leave travel. They have the best prices, lowest military rates ALWAYS, and can find the best routes. Let your soldier make his reservations in Vicenza - they have negotiated the best fares and will avoid the last minute added fees that we have to pay in the States. Please pass the word - you are not doing your soldier any favors by arranging their travel from the states.

It seems that there will always be an excuse to use this web site as a trash bag! Past summer there was the big issue of wives/girlfriends cheating, then Italian vs American and now?? Soldiers coming back and act differently. I was one of the few that was lucky enough to have my husband back after 6 months (pcs) and i remember exactly how i felt as soon as i saw him after the separation: i had no feelings at all, i was frozen inside. Same on his side. It took us few weeks to get "used" to each other again, a lot of talking to catch up with the months we had been separated. We have always had excellent comunication between us and there was the key. Don't be afraid of listening to what he wants to tell, i never asked what he had done there, when he felt ready to tell i was ready to listen. To be accused of cheating doesn't make you guilty, probably only guilty by association, take a good laugh and ask how come your husband/boyfriend got such an idea. You will be surprised to know how many FALSE gossips have been circulating between the troops!!! I really had a great and good laugh when my husband told me what he was told i was doing while he was deployed, gee, i guess some people should leave the army and join the Academy Award! They have a lot of potential as script writers!!! Guys, welcome back and always remember that we are ALL proud of you no matter what!

With our soldiers’ return, there is much talk of failing/failed relationships. I would like to offer up two points to ponder. I do not have solutions or answers, because they will be different for each individual couple. But please take the time to consider the information provided below in the context of YOUR relationship. For ease of writing, the following refers to soldiers as male. But the concepts also apply to female soldiers. 1. Our soldiers have heard rumors/tales of the wives/girlfriends that were unfaithful while their soldiers were in Iraq. In light of this, when the soldier comes home to a wife or girlfriend that is acting “differently”, the tendency is to become suspicious that there has been a breech in their relationship. Unfortunately, they don’t stop to realize that it is normal that their wife/girlfriend act differently. She has had to develop new skills and strategies to cope with her soldier’s absence. She had to become resourceful and independent. She had to handle the finances, the car repairs, the child rearing, the broken light fixtures, etc etc all by herself. In essence, she became a single head-of-household for a year. Along the way, she developed a sense of ownership of the tasks, and pride in what she has accomplished. When her soldier returns, he wants things to be as they were previously. He wants to resume control of his prior duties. She may not find it easy to relinquish control. Tension builds. She is acting “different”. And the soldier jumps to the conclusion that she has been unfaithful. It’s easier to blame her than to look inward and see that you may be playing a significant role in the change in her behavior. 2. During the ages of 17 to 24, a great deal of change and growth occurs in the psychological make-up of a human being. What you like at age 18 may not be at all desirable to you at age 23. Tastes change. Behaviors change. Beliefs change. Goals change. If a couple is together during this time of change, they exert a subtle influence on each other’s growth/maturation, and often guide each other to similar destinations. One’s environment also plays a part in this development, and couples that are together are most likely experiencing the same environment, and hence changing in similar fashion. But couples apart during this time of change may grow to be totally different people. They experience different environments. They come to decisions/conclusions on their own, without significant input from their mate. Two persons who were very much in love and ever so compatible at age 18, will not be the same two people now, a year later, after this war. It is not the other person’s fault. You BOTH changed. The question becomes do you love that person enough to accept what they have become? Do not make the assumption that you can change that person back to what they were or to what you now want/need them to be. The only person you can reliably change is yourself. But you have to WANT to do it, not be forced or “guilted” into it.

I am so happy to see that almost all of our Sky Soldiers are back in Italy !! I still read this site almost everyday. It has brought such comfort to me. I have laughed over FBB, and cried for the young ladies whose soldier has returned so changed. May I offer a bit of advice to everyone? Give your soldier some space. Maybe take the time to talk to some older Veterans. My father served 2 tours in Vietnam, he still does not talk about it. He warned me that when my son returned he would be different. Only a robot could come through a war and not be changed. As an Air Force Captain who wrote a tribute to my son, whom he didn't even know, "There are no young people in a war zone." Not only have you aged a year but they probably have aged a hundred. Have patience, let them come to you or not. Love them unconditionally. But remember you can't treat them as if nothing happened - it did. Never believe that because they are now on safe ground that they should all turn back into the person that left - ain't going to happen. Talk to Veterans near you - see what their advice might be. Best wishes to all of you on your loved ones return. May God grant them the serenity and peace they so richly deserve. They are truly heroes. And to the families - May God grant you patience.
